Power system analysis of electric rail traction systems and opportunities to conserve energy using new technologies

Bruce Miller – Senior Principal Consultant - Advisian

Our June function will be presented by Bruce Miller on “Power system analysis of Rail Power Traction Systems”.

Bruce is currently a Senior Principal Consultant at Advisian, the advisory arm of WorleyParsons. His has an extensive high voltage power system background which has seen him involved in the design, commissioning, project management and the development of power stations, substations and mathematical/software applications.

Pertinent to the RTSA, the latter include mathematical models of Railway Power Traction systems.

In addition, Bruce has delivered several papers and authored publications and presentations on various high voltage power system related topics.

This presentation will look at the power system modelling of large scale (2 to 100 MW) battery storage systems and their possible application to Rail traction electric power systems. As well as the modelling of traction systems as they are currently designed.

Possible new approaches for reducing the energy costs of traction systems will be briefly explored which we hope will encourage discussion after the presentation.
