2016 Antonia Niaga and Mitchell Lees

Graduate Engineer Award 2016

There are two recipients of the 2016 RTSA Graduate Engineer Award, being: Ms. Antonia Niaga and Mr. Mitchell Lees.


Ms. Antonia Niaga graduated from the University of Queensland in 2012 with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering and is currently working as a Graduate Mechanical Engineer with Aurizon in Brisbane. Since graduation, Antonia has worked in several parts of the Aurizon business including mechanical systems (rolling stock), field support in maintenance facilities, wagon design & acquisition, plant engineering, fleet productivity and wheel-rail interface & brakes engineering. The culmination of 3 years of rolling stock knowledge has led to Antonia implementing operational change in Aurizon’s
Blackwater System which results in a reduction of network delays and driver injuries.

Antonia is currently working towards obtaining CPEng and is an active member of Young Engineers Australia Queensland (YEAQ) where she assists with organising and promoting professional development and networking events for young engineers.

Mr. Mitchell Lees graduated from Central Queensland University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering (First Class Honours) and currently works as a Graduate Civil Engineer with Aurizon in Mackay QLD. Within three years of graduation, Mitchell became a Chartered Professional Engineering (CPEng) and obtained his RPEQ. Mitchell’s experience at Aurizon includes design engineering, track and civil construction and maintenance, civil asset assurance, and standards engineering.

In 2013, Mitchell was the runner-up of the RTSA Railway Engineering Student Thesis Award for his undergraduate thesis: ‘Rail Stress Analysis: An investigation into monitoring stresses in continuously welded rails through stress free temperature.”
