The RTSA has made a comprehensive submission to the NSW Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) on its enquiry of the NSW branch lines. Following the very successful RTSA study tour on NSW branch lines in March 2006 and the joint RTSA / Charles Sturt University symposium ‘Future Frameworks for Regional Rail’ in February 2007, RTSA members were able to gain insight into the challenges and opportunities facing regional rail in NSW.

It is nearly 6 years since the original study tour and symposium and the issues and challenges the RTSA identified then are as relevant today as in 2006.

The RTSA has provided IPART with a copy of its STORE report and presentations delivered at the symposium including those of the RTSA’s eminent speaker at the time, Ed Zsombor.

The submission and supporting information can be downloaded below:

The recipient of the prestigious 2011 RTSA Individual Award for his outstanding contribution to the Australian rail industry is Mr. David Marchant.

David had been instrumental in leading the ARTC, during his time as Chief Executive Officer from its inception in 1998 until his retirement in 2011, in the establishment of a “one-stop shop” for rail operators seeking access to the interstate standard gauge rail network between Brisbane and Perth. David also has been successful in gaining substantial funding for major infrastructure upgrades of these main lines as well as the Hunter Valley coal lines.

In addition to his exemplary role with the ARTC David has been an active supporter of the rail industry as a whole which has been illustrated by his 2009 appointment as Chairman of the Board for the Australasian Railway Association and his continual support of the technically based RTSA CORE railway conferences.

High Speed Rail – Taiwan, South Korea and Japan – Reports from Delegates

Following the study tour of high speed rail systems of Taiwan, South Korea and Japan, in May of this year, each of the sixteen RTSA delegates on the tour were required to write a short report, on a topic of their choice of their experiences. Each of these reports has been consolidated into one overall publication, the Reports from Delegates. The purpose of these reports is to impart delegates knowledge and experiences; to provide a legacy to other Australian and New Zealand rail engineers, to inspire young engineers contemplating entering the rail industry, and as communication exercise to the wider community. These are part of the goals of the RTSA.

The tour was a tremendous success. Thanks go to Nick Brown and Koichi Yoshimura from Marubeni Australia, the STORE organising committee and to the sixteen delegates for such a memorable study tour!
