Overview
People are discussing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and many are concerned about it, while others are taking advantage of it. Everyone will be affected by it. This presentation will be a high-level overview of how AI works and what it can and cannot do. It is well known that almost all computing, from 3D graphics to computer tomography, is based on linear algebra and calculus. It is not surprising that AI and other “frightening” developments have used the same concepts. I will explain, in a way that is understandable to a numerate audience, how AI works without getting too technical.
The goal is to make it less intimidating with a bit of knowledge. I will discuss why I am not worried about losing my job, why being an early childhood educator may be the job of the future, and why I look forward to the day my doctor uses AI to diagnose me.
Learning outcomes
- The meaning of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- Review of learning algorithms you may have heard about
- The future of AI
