2013 Dr. Francis Small

THE 2013 RTSA INDIVIDUAL AWARD HAS BEEN MADE TO DR. FRANCIS SMALL IN RECOGNITION OF THE OUTSTANDING SERVICE THAT HE HAS RENDERED TO THE NEW ZEALAND RAIL INDUSTRY OVER NEARLY FIVE DECADES.

Dr. Small joined New Zealand Railways in 1964 holding engineering degrees from the University of Auckland and he was engaged directly in the rail business for the next 36 years, holding various senior management positions including responsibility for the core freight business, Group General Manager and then Managing Director of New Zealand Rail and subsequently Tranz Rail. He played a leading role in the restructuring and privatisation of the company. He was a board member of NZ Rail, Tranz Rail Holdings, Wisconsin Central, Tasrail and the Australian Transport Network for a period of five years. Following his retirement, Dr. Small has been a partner of Murray King and Francis Small Consulting, offering advice in a variety of strategic areas including rail. He is a Distinguished Fellow of Professional Engineers New Zealand (Engineering New Zealand) and was National President of Engineering New Zealand in 1996 and 1997.
