Faster Rail, Rapid Rail or High-Speed Rail: it’s all about connectivity and travel choices centred on delivering faster, more efficient and reliable journey times that link our major cities and growing regional centres.  Faster, reliable and sustainable transport is an important part of unlocking many of New Zealand’s development challenges, such as housing and climate change.

‘Past’ Fast rail 101: With help from Mark Xerri, we will learn about some of the past investigations and ongoing projects of faster rail in Australia.

‘Present’  The Ministry of Transport is currently looking into the fast rail (aka. Rapid Rail) options between Auckland and Hamilton. Alex Marr and Theunis Van Schalkwyk will provide an insight into this recent work.

‘Future’ How would connecting NZ’s major cities with faster rail change the housing landscape, our travel behaviours, and regional productivity – and how fast would it need to be?  Angus and Theunis will discuss the potential of a Faster Rail plan for New Zealand, discussing the challenges and opportunities that exist – and hopefully inspiring a lively debate about the sort of rail future New Zealand wants.
