RTSA SA Chapter Event – Gawler Rail Electrification Project

October 29, 2020 @ 5:45 pm - 7:30 pm UTC+10

Please join the RTSA at Fedoras Hilton Hotel to hear a live presentation from both Cody Sharrad and Kate Taylor on the Gawler Rail Electrification Project followed by networking with your peers including complimentary drinks and nibbles.

Gawler Rail Electrification Project

The Gawler rail line provides a mix of express and all-stop passenger rail services between Adelaide’s CBD and northern suburbs using a diesel fleet. Patronage along the Gawler rail line is rapidly growing 30 per cent over the period 2006 until 2016 becoming the most patronised passenger rail route in Adelaide. Currently, passengers are using 75 percent of train capacity during the morning peak along the busiest sections of the rail line. With Project completion expected in late 2021, the electrified line will support increased capacity and future growth opportunities and development along the rail corridor and in northern Adelaide.

The Gawler Rail Electrification Project’s scope of works include:
• Installation of a new 25 kV Electrification System including: 42 km of dual track overhead wiring; Feeder Station, two Track Sectioning Cabins and a Track Coupling Unit; Safe earthing and bonding of the rail corridor
• Installation of a modern Signalling, Communications and Control System including:  WESTRACE Mk II Computer Based Interlocking; Tilt-pole signals with LED heads; ETCS Baseline 2 Automatic Train Protection System; Fibre-optic Communications System
• Activation of selected pedestrian crossings along the Gawler rail line
• Replacement of the King Street Bridge with a pedestrian bridge to accommodate installation of the 25 kV electrification system
• Service relocations, vegetation trimming and removal, and other works necessary to enable the electrification to proceed

Speakers: Kate Taylor and Cody Sharrad

Kate Taylor has 25 years’ experience in rail transport engineering design and design management and is adept at managing design programs to ensure projects are delivered to clients’ expectations. She has provided innovative design solutions across multiple disciplines on a range of rail projects for major private and public-sector clients. Kate’s experience working in large, multi-disciplinary teams has seen her identify and implement the best approach to coordinating multiple stakeholders in complex and challenging environments to achieve successful project outcomes.

Kate arrived on the project at a critical time during project delivery as the contractors Engineering Manager when the design had technical issues requiring resolution and was needing a focus to ensure it could be completed and integrated in time to enable delivery. Kate’s key focus is design integration across the multiple disciplines, quality, and management of the design through the independent review process. Kate also manages the interface with the construction teams, client and operator to ensure a higher quality outcome, ongoing safety assurance, and that operations and maintenance considerations are incorporated. Kate has worked together with Cody and the other key project team members to ensure a best for project approach has been implemented.

Cody Sharrad is the Engineering Manager for the Gawler Rail Electrification Project. He has worked for the Department for Infrastructure and Transport since 2016 in rail engineering roles across transport project delivery, infrastructure maintenance and asset management.

Having originally started as a Project Engineer on GREP at its inception, Cody has worked through conception and planning, procurement and on to delivery of the project.
Cody has worked in a highly technical role on the project across all areas. He brings with him an expanse of knowledge across railway systems and is equipped with the critical ability to integrate across disciplines. He uses his cross-disciplinary understanding to deliver outcomes that balance the needs of asset owners, operators, the travelling public and the South Australian community.
