SUMMARY:NSW Chapter Event: Upgrading railway electrification traction to 25 kV AC
DESCRIPTION:Join the RTSA New South Wales Chapter and the RTAA online for a presentation on Railway electrification: upgrading traction to 25kV AC\, the strategies\, the engineering and the challenges when converting legacy DC railway traction networks to high capacity\, AC networks. This webinar will be held at 7:00-8:30pm AEDT on Monday 8th November 2021. Click here to register on the Engineers Australia website. \nEvent Overview\nThe Railway Technical Society of Australasia and Rail Track Association Australia present this webinar that covers concepts many existing rail networks grapple with; if it is possible to\, and how to upgrade their traction system from direct current to alternating current. The webinar will draw on international experience and cover the considerations and impacts on the various railway disciplines when planning and delivering the conversion of the traction system. \nSpeakers\nPaul Costello\nManaging Director Electrification\, Keltbray International \nPaul is the Managing Director of Wentworth House Rail Systems (WHRS) Limited\, a Design and Assurance Consultancy which is part of the Keltbray Group. Paul has over 30 years’ experience in Railway Electrification Schemes from 550Vdc to 50kVAC. Paul has worked on extremely complex infrastructure projects such as Manila Metro and Singapore North East Line and spent 3 years working in Australia which included the Adelaide Seaford Lines Project. Paul was an active committee member of the I Mech. E Victoria branch. \n  \nKevin Prendergast\nRolling Stock Technical Manager\, Rail Projects Victoria \nKevin has over 30 years rolling stock experience working for OEM\, client\, advisory and operating organisations in the UK\, Europe and Australia. \nKevin’s career originates with the integration and entry to service of the original Eurostar trains\, providing quad-current operation through the Channel Tunnel. \nAugmented by roles in technology\, railway asset management\, and consultancy\, Kevin currently coordinates the integration of the new HCMT trains with Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel green and brownfield projects. \n  \nLuis Rico MIEAust CPEng NER\nSenior Rolling Stock Electrical Engineer\, Suburban Rail Loop \nLuis has over 24 years in the rail industry working and consulting for rolling stock manufacturers and rail operators in Latin America\, UK\, Europe and Australia. \nLuis’ career originated in electrical traction systems for trolleybuses\, expertise that brought him to Alstom UK from Mexico\, for a fleet of these vehicles for Greece. \nLuis has also worked for Bombardier in Derby\, UK and more recently as Engineering Manager for CRRC within the HCMT Project. Luis currently is contracting for the Suburban Rail Loop via his company RRC and supporting the development of the Technical Specification for the trains.

SUMMARY:NZ Chapter Event: Mainline Track Upgrades: Auckland-Wellington and Sydney-Melbourne
DESCRIPTION:Join the Railway Technical Society of Australasia New Zealand Chapter online with Dr Philip Laird to discuss ‘Mainline Track Upgrades: Auckland – Wellington and Sydney – Melbourne’ at 12:30-1:30pm NZT on the 17th November 2021. \nRegister here. \nAuckland and Wellington are linked by the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) narrow gauge railway of length 681km. Sydney and Melbourne are now linked by a standard gauge railway of length 960 km. Both railways include challenging terrain. \nAn outline is given of former improvements for each of the NIMT railway and the Melbourne to Sydney railway that include deviations for grade easing. Many of the NIMT deviations have led to a reduction in distance. By way of contrast\, each NSW main south line deviation has resulted in extra distance. Further contrasts include electrification of most of the NIMT during the 1980s\, and\, the NIMT gaining Centralised traffic control signalling for most of its length some 42 years ahead of the Melbourne to Sydney railway. \nSome planned and possible upgrades are outlined for the NIMT. The paper concludes that in order for the Sydney Melbourne railway to win more freight and passenger traffic\, some track straightening is essential. \nSpeaker\nDr Philip Laird\nHonorary Associate Professor\, the University of Wollongong \nDr Philip Laird is a graduate of Victoria University of Wellington\, the Australian National University in Canberra and the University of Calgary in Canada. He is currently an Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Wollongong and his land transport research appears in journals and refereed conference papers. \nHis recent work includes the potential benefits of the development of Medium Speed Rail to connect for NSW regional centres to Sydney and an Inland Railway linking Melbourne and Brisbane though Parkes being constructed to modern engineering standards. \nOn Australia Day 2021 Philip was awarded an OAM “For service to the rail freight and passenger transport industry.” \nClick here register on the Engineering New Zealand website.
