With more than 65\,000 residents currently living along the corridor\, and projected to grow to 95\,000 by 2041\, this underutilised asset presents a compelling opportunity for adaptive reuse. This session explores the potential to transform the corridor into a viable passenger rail service connecting Cessnock to Newcastle and the broader transport network. \nAttendees will gain insight into the engineering\, operational and economic assessments undertaken to evaluate the corridor’s reuse. The session will examine upgrade requirements\, service planning considerations\, and value-for-money analysis\, including findings that position this project as a highly competitive rail investment. Delivering rail up to and beyond the Blue Mountains required engineers of the late 19th century to overcome formidable geographic\, technical and logistical challenges using the tools\, materials and knowledge available at the time. This session examines the engineering decisions and constraints that shaped the original rail alignment and supporting infrastructure\, within the broader context of the NSW Government’s ambition to expand state-owned rail networks into western\, northern and southern regions. \nUsing the Great Western Railway to Bathurst line as a case study\, the presentation will explore how early engineers addressed terrain\, gradients\, river and creek crossings\, construction methods\, and operational limitations. These took him right across the network and led to an ongoing passion for railway history and heritage\, including looking at the ways in which the system developed\, overcoming significant political and engineering challenges. Frank’s railway interest is not confined to the past\, for the current challenges and engineering issues are of equal interest and importance. In 2025\, Frank was one of the presenters for an Engineers Australia event commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the NSW Railways reaching Gunning on the Main South Line\, so his railway interest is indeed state wide.

SUMMARY:Concept plan for Canberra to Eden railway
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nJoin us online at 5:30-6:30pm on Monday 28th July for an in-depth presentation on The Plan—an ambitious and innovative rail infrastructure proposal by engineer and economist Edwin Michell. The Plan envisions tilting passenger trains reaching speeds of up to 160 km/h and freight trains up to 115 km/h along an upgraded and extended railway corridor from Canberra to Bombala and down the South Coast Range to the Port of Eden—one of Australia’s finest harbours. \nThis session will outline the engineering and economic considerations of railing inland produce—75% of which is exported—to the coast. Attendees will learn how Michell tackled the major challenge of designing a viable route down a 750-metre descent using gradients mostly limited to 1 in 70 (with brief sections at 1 in 60)\, incorporating switchbacks\, viaducts\, and minimal tunnelling (less than two kilometres total). The project\, estimated at a maximum of $3 billion in 2018\, was featured in the Engineers Australia magazine Create in October 2020. \nThe event will also explore the conclusive Economic Evaluation of the Plan conducted by leading transport economist R. J. Wilson Dai\, Senior Track Engineer at Mott MacDonald\, will be presenting Mott MacDonald’s Carbon Twin and how it is used to visualise embodied carbon within projects. Mott MacDonald were engaged by the Department of Transport and Main Roads in Queensland as a Technical Advisor for the Logan to Gold Coast Faster Rail project. This webinar will provide a demonstration of Mott MacDonald’s Carbon Twin\, how it was used on the project and the importance of minimising embodied carbon.\n\nThe speaker\, Wilson Dai\, is a senior track engineer at Mott MacDonald. He graduated in 2020 from the University of New South Wales with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Hons) / Commerce (Financial Economics) degree. He joined Mott MacDonald in 2021 as a Civil Engineer in the Rail Team and is now specialising in track and alignment design. Construction of the Stage 1 portion is now complete on all 16 light rail stops along the 12 km alignment from Westmead to Carlingford. Testing and commissioning of light rail vehicles is underway and the depot facility is nearing completion\, with opening of the line on target within 2024. \nCAF Turnkey & Engineering (T&E) has been working on the project since 2019 as part of the Great River City Rail Light Consortium\, made up of CAF Rail Australia and Transdev Australasia. The fourth day of the conference will provide a range of technical visits to complement the three technical days. \nThanks to ASPECT 2023 being held in one of the most liveable cities in the world\, we have secured the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre to host the three days of technical sessions. This world-class facility is in the heart of the Melbourne CBD and close to transport\, hotels\, and restaurants. It will take place from 08:30 Tuesday 21 to 17:00 Friday 24 November 2023 (local times). \nOne of the highlights of the week is the conference dinner which will be held at one of Melbourne’s iconic venues. SUMMARY:NSW Chapter Event: Rolling stock signalling interface\, compliance and compatibility testing
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE – NEW DATE: THURSDAY 2ND NOVEMBER \nOverview \nElectrified railways use running rails for three purposes: guiding the train\, providing a return path for traction currents\, and detecting trains. These purposes have coexisted since the early 1900s. However\, the introduction of electronic traction control in the 1970s and 3-phase inverter drives in the 1990s generated high levels of complex switching harmonics that threatened the safe operation of train detection. To address this issue\, railways developed standards to specify the limits of harmonics permissible in the traction return. Although rolling stock manufacturers have found ways to minimise the threat posed by electronic switching\, it is still necessary to test every new design of rolling stock entering the rail network to ensure that it is effectively detected by the signaling system and does not produce electrical noise that can interfere with the proper operation of the signaling system. Modern trains and rolling stock can cause electrical interference that disrupts signalling train detection systems and makes it difficult to detect short and light vehicles. SUMMARY:International Workshop on Railway Brake Research (On-line)
DESCRIPTION:Brakes are indispensable and safety-critical systems for all types of railway trains including passenger (high-speed\, metro\, tram\, etc.) and freight trains (heavy-haul\, intermodal\, etc.). Safe and efficient railway operations require a good understanding of brakes from various parties including drivers\, maintenance crews\, manufacturers\, and design engineers. Brake research helps to expand and deepen the knowledge about railway train brakes. \nDriven by the rapid development of Intelligent Transport Systems and the ever-increasing demands for faster and heavier trains\, as well as energy savings and sustainability\, railway brake research has seen a new wave of interests from the industry and academia. Under these situations\, we propose an International Workshop on Railway Brake Research to boost brake research. The International Workshop on Railway Brake Research will be virtually hosted by CRE of Central Queensland University (Australia) and DIEF of University of Florence (Italy) from 19-20 September 2023.
