Construction of the Stage 1 portion is now complete on all 16 light rail stops along the 12 km alignment from Westmead to Carlingford. Testing and commissioning of light rail vehicles is underway and the depot facility is nearing completion\, with opening of the line on target within 2024. \nCAF Turnkey & Engineering (T&E) has been working on the project since 2019 as part of the Great River City Rail Light Consortium\, made up of CAF Rail Australia and Transdev Australasia. DESCRIPTION:ASPECT is the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE) international technical conference\, held every two years at locations around the world.  \nASPECT 2023 Programme \nThe conference will run over three days\, delivering fifty one technical papers from global industry experts on the theme of Global Integration and will also feature several related workshop sessions. \nASPECT provides an unrivalled opportunity for learning and the exchange of knowledge in the fields of train control\, railway communications\, and related disciplines. The fourth day of the conference will provide a range of technical visits to complement the three technical days. \nThanks to ASPECT 2023 being held in one of the most liveable cities in the world\, we have secured the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre to host the three days of technical sessions. This world-class facility is in the heart of the Melbourne CBD and close to transport\, hotels\, and restaurants. It will take place from 08:30 Tuesday 21 to 17:00 Friday 24 November 2023 (local times). \nOne of the highlights of the week is the conference dinner which will be held at one of Melbourne’s iconic venues. Finally\, as it is a rail conference\, we have arranged a chartered steam train ride on the Puffing Billy Railway\, including site visits and evening dinner to top it off with. \nThe event has consistently attracted a wide of range of people in the industry with over 250 delegates from across the globe attending the last ASPECT conference.

SUMMARY:NSW Chapter Event: Rolling stock signalling interface\, compliance and compatibility testing
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE – NEW DATE: THURSDAY 2ND NOVEMBER \nOverview \nElectrified railways use running rails for three purposes: guiding the train\, providing a return path for traction currents\, and detecting trains. These purposes have coexisted since the early 1900s. However\, the introduction of electronic traction control in the 1970s and 3-phase inverter drives in the 1990s generated high levels of complex switching harmonics that threatened the safe operation of train detection. To address this issue\, railways developed standards to specify the limits of harmonics permissible in the traction return. Although rolling stock manufacturers have found ways to minimise the threat posed by electronic switching\, it is still necessary to test every new design of rolling stock entering the rail network to ensure that it is effectively detected by the signaling system and does not produce electrical noise that can interfere with the proper operation of the signaling system. Modern trains and rolling stock can cause electrical interference that disrupts signalling train detection systems and makes it difficult to detect short and light vehicles. DESCRIPTION:Brakes are indispensable and safety-critical systems for all types of railway trains including passenger (high-speed\, metro\, tram\, etc.) and freight trains (heavy-haul\, intermodal\, etc.). Safe and efficient railway operations require a good understanding of brakes from various parties including drivers\, maintenance crews\, manufacturers\, and design engineers. Brake research helps to expand and deepen the knowledge about railway train brakes. \nDriven by the rapid development of Intelligent Transport Systems and the ever-increasing demands for faster and heavier trains\, as well as energy savings and sustainability\, railway brake research has seen a new wave of interests from the industry and academia. Under these situations\, we propose an International Workshop on Railway Brake Research to boost brake research. DESCRIPTION:Overview\nRio Tinto’s autonomous train is 2.4km long\, consists of three locomotives and carries around 28\,000 tonnes of iron ore\, it travels over 280km. It’s the world’s first fully autonomous\, long distance\, heavy-haul rail network. The trains are giant autonomous robots because once they are set on their course\, they make all the decisions. \nThe AutoHaul™ team monitor the trains remotely from the Operations Centre in Perth (over 1\,500km away)\, they set the route and once the train is running the on-board computers and the computers in the Operations Centre take over and control the train. Vinod\, invites participation from university students and their supervisors\, Early Career Researchers (ECRs)\, engineers\, engineering researchers\, engineering managers\, and others in the rail sector. \nRail testing facility at Russel Vale: University of Wollongong\nSnapshot of ARC ITTC Rail\n$7.3 million rail training centre\, prioritising inter-disciplinary research and industry engagement\, training and development of 21 PhD students and 3 postdoctoral fellows. With the industry support\, innovation solution can be applied to real life project(s).\nDeep learning applications for infrastructure projects\, by Professor Mike Meylan\, The University of Newcastle – Almost every business in Australia could benefit from the applications of AI. The question is whether it is cost effective to do so\, and whether it is the right time to do so. So we are going to talk about the implementations and processes of how\, why\, and when to do it. There will be high level\, big picture material and the opportunity to ask questions and give input. There will be examples where this technology could be implemented in the railway industry.\nDesign and maintenance of ballasted tracks\, by Associate Professor\, Jayan S Vinod\, University of Wollongong – The presentation will cover the fundamental knowledge of track geotechnology\, leading to the ballast design. In addition\, there will an interactive session to discuss problems faced by industry. This presentation will draw on the use of some of the large experimental testing facilities available at UOW for physical model testing of ballast and track.\nEarly vendor involvement (EVI) for applications\, by Distinguished Professor Zhengyi Jiang\, Director of the ITTC – Rail Facility\, University of Wollongong – This presentation will highlight fundamentals and prototyping of new products or devices\, showing real application of the research findings and issues of industry partners\, providing service for the requirement from end users\, and enhancing the exchanges between academia and industry researchers. We will use engineering language to facilitate attendees’ understanding.\n\n  \nLunch session – Test demonstration at the facility at Russell Vale (RV) \nThe RV facility enables testing of a real-size (1:1 scale) instrumented track section. The track section will be subjected to continuous cyclic loading via two pairs of dynamic actuators. The test will be carried out under a 15-25 T axle load at a frequency of 15HZ (around 60-80 km/hr at standard gauge tracks). The testing facility is capable of capturing track settlements\, lateral deformation\, transient vertical and lateral stresses\, rail and sleeper acceleration\, and ballast breakage. \n  \nAfternoon Industry led session \nIt is anticipated some of the key areas of interest to the rail industry\, including assessment of current condition of assets and potential extension of design life\, micro-credentials for the rail industry and application of remote and non-destructive technologies will be addressed in the industry led session. SUMMARY:RTSA On-line Event: Adhesion condition estimation between wheels and rails
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThis presentation will discuss how the adhesion condition between wheel and rail can be estimated and how the braking performance of a rail vehicle can be improved utilising the obtained adhesion information. The methodologies used for adhesion estimation are based on specially designed algorithm development\, numerical modelling\, and scaled laboratory experiment (Hardware-in-loop) techniques were used to analyse the braking performance. The presentation will also discuss the basics of wheel-rail contact mechanics\, rail braking control system\, friction\, and adhesion process at wheel-rail interface. \nAn ideal braking system not only ensures safety and ride comfort but also attracts significant cost-benefits through optimum on-time operation and reduction in wheel-rail damage processes. For such a braking system\, the adhesion condition information between the wheel and rail at contact interfaces during rail vehicle operation is essential. The adhesion estimation for the braking system is a complex task because it is influenced by design\, operational and environmental factors.
