DESCRIPTION:Overview\nRio Tinto’s autonomous train is 2.4km long\, consists of three locomotives and carries around 28\,000 tonnes of iron ore\, it travels over 280km. It’s the world’s first fully autonomous\, long distance\, heavy-haul rail network. The trains are giant autonomous robots because once they are set on their course\, they make all the decisions. \nThe AutoHaul™ team monitor the trains remotely from the Operations Centre in Perth (over 1\,500km away)\, they set the route and once the train is running the on-board computers and the computers in the Operations Centre take over and control the train. As Technical Authority\, Lido was accountable for approving technical changes to the AutoHaul® system. This role represented the most senior level of engineering oversight for the AutoHaul® system\, on behalf of RTIO\, including approving of System Hardware and Software Architecture and Safety Assurance strategy. DESCRIPTION:The RTSA NSW/ACT Chapter and the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) NSW Branch have teamed up to arrange a site visit to Sydney Metro Trains Facility (South) (SMTF-S) at 09:00-11:00am on Wednesday 22nd March. \nThis tour will include a presentation by Systems Connect and Sydney Metro and a tour of the Sydney Metro Train Facility South site. \nPlease note that spaces are limited and will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis\, click here for more information on the IET website and to register. \nAbout the site visit\nThe SMTFS site is located in Marrickville and is bounded by Sydney Steel Road and Edinburgh Road to the north\, Railway Parade to the east\, Sydenham Pit and Drainage Pumping Station to the southwest and the Sydney Trains rail corridor to the southeast. \nSydney Metro Trains Facility South will primarily be used for the stabling of trains while also being used to carry out light corrective maintenance to trains and related equipment also providing a secondary storage area. The facility will include the following key elements: \n\nA new stabling yard\nA new depot security centre and fire pump building\nA new maintenance workshop\nA new logistics shed\, associated external storage and bin store\nA new administration and depot control centre building\nA new ground water treatment plant\nNew hi-rail\, employee and visitor parking\nAssociated landscaping architecture works\n\nJoin us for a site visit starting with a presentation from System Connect and Sydney Metro on the delivery of the works and a site visit \nThe project has been designed with the following objectives in mind: \nBeing responsive to distinct contexts and communities \nSydney Metro’s identity is stronger for the unique conditions of centres and communities through which it passes. This local character is to be embraced through distinctive station architecture and public domain that is well integrated with the inherited urban fabric of existing places. It is intended that the trains facility and dive structure respond to their immediate context in a sympathetic way. The urban/community impact to streetscape and neighbourhood is a primary consideration. \nDelivering an enduring and sustainable legacy for Sydney  \nSydney Metro is a positive legacy for future generations. A high standard of design across the corridor\, stations and station precincts\, that sets a new benchmark\, is vital to ensuring the longevity of the Metro system\, its enduring contribution to civic life and an ability to adapt to a changing city over time. New built elements are to reflect the Sydney Metro identity\, being modern\, sophisticated and of its place and time. Screening and planting has been included where possible to minimise visual impact. The materials and construction used will have the necessary qualities to be serviceable\, and endurable enough to meet the required “Design Life”. Care in the detailing and finishing will ensure the buildings continue to be safe\, clean and present well with minimal maintenance. Service facilities by nature are required to be robust. DESCRIPTION:The RTSA is supporting this event\, RTSA National Chair Roy Unny will be speaking about micro-credentials in Rail. \nThe Future of Rail Workshop is 1 day in-person workshop to address the everyday needs of a multi-disciplinary work force that plans\, designs\, constructs\, operates and maintains the nations rail infrastructure. \nDistinguished Professor Zhengyi Jiang\, Director of ARC Industry Transformation Training Centre (ITTC) in Rail (2018 – 2022) & ARC ITTC for Innovative Composites for the Future of Sustainable Mining Equipment (2023– 2027)\, jointly with Deputy Director ARC ITTC in Rail\, Olivia Mirza\, and Centre Chief Investigators Mike Meylan and Jayan S. Vinod\, invites participation from university students and their supervisors\, Early Career Researchers (ECRs)\, engineers\, engineering researchers\, engineering managers\, and others in the rail sector. \nRail testing facility at Russel Vale: University of Wollongong\nSnapshot of ARC ITTC Rail\n$7.3 million rail training centre\, prioritising inter-disciplinary research and industry engagement\, training and development of 21 PhD students and 3 postdoctoral fellows. All sessions are to be highly interactive. This workshop will focus on implementation and deeper development of the necessary technical essentials. It will be presented in industry friendly terminology and technical language. \n\nDefining problems for solutions\, by Professor Olivia Mirza\, Western Sydney University – This lecture is about industry-academia two-way relationships. The presentation will cover the initial conversation between industry and academia\, and how to keep this partnership active and open for discussion. In this relationship\, academia has to understand the industry needs. The innovative solution needs to have agreement by both parties. With the industry support\, innovation solution can be applied to real life project(s).\nDeep learning applications for infrastructure projects\, by Professor Mike Meylan\, The University of Newcastle – Almost every business in Australia could benefit from the applications of AI. The question is whether it is cost effective to do so\, and whether it is the right time to do so. So we are going to talk about the implementations and processes of how\, why\, and when to do it. There will be high level\, big picture material and the opportunity to ask questions and give input. There will be examples where this technology could be implemented in the railway industry.\nDesign and maintenance of ballasted tracks\, by Associate Professor\, Jayan S Vinod\, University of Wollongong – The presentation will cover the fundamental knowledge of track geotechnology\, leading to the ballast design. In addition\, there will an interactive session to discuss problems faced by industry. This presentation will draw on the use of some of the large experimental testing facilities available at UOW for physical model testing of ballast and track.\nEarly vendor involvement (EVI) for applications\, by Distinguished Professor Zhengyi Jiang\, Director of the ITTC – Rail Facility\, University of Wollongong – This presentation will highlight fundamentals and prototyping of new products or devices\, showing real application of the research findings and issues of industry partners\, providing service for the requirement from end users\, and enhancing the exchanges between academia and industry researchers. We will use engineering language to facilitate attendees’ understanding.\n\n  \nLunch session – Test demonstration at the facility at Russell Vale (RV) \nThe RV facility enables testing of a real-size (1:1 scale) instrumented track section. The track section will be subjected to continuous cyclic loading via two pairs of dynamic actuators. The test will be carried out under a 15-25 T axle load at a frequency of 15HZ (around 60-80 km/hr at standard gauge tracks). The testing facility is capable of capturing track settlements\, lateral deformation\, transient vertical and lateral stresses\, rail and sleeper acceleration\, and ballast breakage. \n  \nAfternoon Industry led session \nIt is anticipated some of the key areas of interest to the rail industry\, including assessment of current condition of assets and potential extension of design life\, micro-credentials for the rail industry and application of remote and non-destructive technologies will be addressed in the industry led session. SUMMARY:RTSA On-line Event: Adhesion condition estimation between wheels and rails
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThis presentation will discuss how the adhesion condition between wheel and rail can be estimated and how the braking performance of a rail vehicle can be improved utilising the obtained adhesion information. The methodologies used for adhesion estimation are based on specially designed algorithm development\, numerical modelling\, and scaled laboratory experiment (Hardware-in-loop) techniques were used to analyse the braking performance. The presentation will also discuss the basics of wheel-rail contact mechanics\, rail braking control system\, friction\, and adhesion process at wheel-rail interface. \nAn ideal braking system not only ensures safety and ride comfort but also attracts significant cost-benefits through optimum on-time operation and reduction in wheel-rail damage processes. For such a braking system\, the adhesion condition information between the wheel and rail at contact interfaces during rail vehicle operation is essential. The adhesion estimation for the braking system is a complex task because it is influenced by design\, operational and environmental factors. SUMMARY:Qld Chapter Webinar Event: Introduction to rail traction power earthing and bonding systems
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nAttend this webinar to understand related risks in the rail environment and undertake a review of projects and the complexities encountered. \nThis presentation will outline: \n\nlearnings from recent rail projects\ntunnel environments where aspects of these complexities were encountered\nbrief introduction to the safety critical importance of Traction Power Earthing and Bonding systems.\n\nAdditional information\nManaging earthing related risk in the rail environment requires approaches that can be significantly different to those used for typical HV power systems. Hazardous voltages may be present not only under fault conditions but also due to the flow of traction currents under normal operations. Current draw of moving trains combined with currents injected by regenerative breaking\, results in a power system load flow analysis where the connection points of multiple sources and multiple loads move based on timetables. \nTypical earthing design approaches\, applicable to above ground meshed power systems\, are often difficult to implement in constrained tunnel environments where parallel exposure lengths are significant and available real estate is minimal. This combined with significantly higher likelihood of the presence of people\, adds additional complexity to earthing system design. \nAbout the speaker\nLachlan McKerrow\, Principal Engineer\, Safearth \nSince 1999 Lachlan has been in the discipline of earthing providing consulting expertise to a range of key infrastructure projects in the industrial\, transport and energy sectors. Now a Principal Engineer\, Lachlan is responsible for leading a team of consultants servicing the defence infrastructure\, rail\, tunnelling\, major construction as well as the renewable energy sectors. Lachlan graduated with BE (Elec) from the University of Newcastle in 1994 and worked for a small consulting firm servicing the mining and coal loading industry in Newcastle. Over the past 5 years there has been a major increase in attacks on the railway system with a number denial of service and ransomware attacks being announced. \nThe railway industry is clearly a target for cyber criminals\, and it is clearly hard to defend due to the inherent geographical distribution and technologically speaking the railway systems are designed with safety and availability rather than any focus on security. Starting as field engineer and ending up as Project Manager\, during the years he has developed a deep knowledge of all the problems connected with the design and construction of Underground Projects\, dealing also with different specific activities\, like tendering\, feasibility studies\, preliminary and final design\, monitoring and construction. He has been involved in the design and construction of several tunnels\, including the High Speed/Capacity railway line Bologna to Florence\, TBM tunnelling projects in Turkey\, the Autostrada Pedemontana Lombarda highway system\, and the SA-RC highway. His key experience applies to conventional tunnelling in different geotechnical situations\, from weak soil\, to mixed soil\, to hard rock\, with both conventional and TBM method. Since 2014 he has been working in Terzo Valico jobsites\, and currently he is responsible for the Design of Underground Works\, for Webuild\, in the Terzo Valico dei Giovi – Genova Junction – One Project. \nRemo Grandori\, Responsible for TBM\, Plant & Equipment\, Webuild\nSince 1984 Remo has been working in the field of mechanized tunneling\, starting as a TBM site engineer\, and ending up as Technical Director\, for some of the most important tunnel projects executed worldwide. During its career has been involved in the execution of over 130 TBM tunnel projects\, for about 1100 km of tunnels bored in the most different geologies and conditions. Furthermore\, since 1987\, he has participated in the development of several innovations in tunnel and TBMs design acting as Consultant to Clients\, Contractors and TBM manufactures. Its cooperation with Webuild group goes back to the late eighties and continued until today\, having been involved in the study and execution of several major TBM projects in North and South America\, China\, Europe\, Africa and lately in Australia. He subsequently spent a period of time at train maintenance depots in largely engineering management roles. \nIn September 2000 James moved to Railtrack\, then Network Rail\, working with Infrastructure and Rail Vehicle engineers and operations teams\, giving him the ‘system’ approach to engineering that he has still has today. \nJames established the Network Certification Body (NCB)\, a Network Rail subsidiary business in 2011. As NCB’s Managing Director he led the business in providing independent engineering certification services to both infrastructure and rail vehicle projects. \nSince 2018 James has been the Head of Design in the Southern Region of Network Rail\, leading the large team of multi-discipline design and testing engineers that support rail infrastructure capital delivery projects. \n \nCarolyn Griffiths\nDirector of Irish Rail \nCarolyn’s career in the Rail industry spans from shop floor technician to Board Director. She has worked in heavy rail\, metro and light rail; in engineering operations\, manufacturing and establishing new rail systems both in the UK and overseas (living and working in Singapore\, Sweden and Germany). \nShe is a Board member of Irish Rail and recent Board member of AES Engineering. Her last full time role was Chief Inspector of the Rail Accident Investigation Branch UK; she founded the organisation and lead its operations for 10 years\, reporting to the Secretary of State for Transport. \nShe is a Board member of the Royal Academy of Engineering ; Past President and current member of Council for the IMechE and recent Board member of Engineering Council. DESCRIPTION:Join the Railway Technical Society of Australasia New Zealand Chapter online with Dr Philip Laird to discuss ‘Mainline Track Upgrades: Auckland – Wellington and Sydney – Melbourne’ at 12:30-1:30pm NZT on the 17th November 2021. \nRegister here. \nAuckland and Wellington are linked by the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) narrow gauge railway of length 681km. Sydney and Melbourne are now linked by a standard gauge railway of length 960 km. Both railways include challenging terrain. \nAn outline is given of former improvements for each of the NIMT railway and the Melbourne to Sydney railway that include deviations for grade easing. Many of the NIMT deviations have led to a reduction in distance. By way of contrast\, each NSW main south line deviation has resulted in extra distance. Further contrasts include electrification of most of the NIMT during the 1980s\, and\, the NIMT gaining Centralised traffic control signalling for most of its length some 42 years ahead of the Melbourne to Sydney railway. \nSome planned and possible upgrades are outlined for the NIMT. The paper concludes that in order for the Sydney Melbourne railway to win more freight and passenger traffic\, some track straightening is essential. \nSpeaker\nDr Philip Laird\nHonorary Associate Professor\, the University of Wollongong \nDr Philip Laird is a graduate of Victoria University of Wellington\, the Australian National University in Canberra and the University of Calgary in Canada.
