DESCRIPTION:The RTSA New Zealand and the Engineering New Zealand Auckland Branch invite you to a presentation from Professor Andrew McNaughton\, Strategic Advisor to the UK High Speed 2 Rail project in Auckland on Monday\, 19 August which will also be available for members elsewhere to view live online. \nAndrew McNaughton is a leading authority on high speed rail and chairs the World High Speed Rail Committee. He was the Chief Engineer for the UK High Speed 2 project from 2009 -17 and led the specification\, operational design\, technical strategy and route development for the project. He is currently leading the New South Wales government Fastrail strategy\, as part of its regional development and regeneration agenda\, and is Special Advisor to the Czech Republic Government on similar issues. Andrew is a Professorial Fellow at the University of Southampton and a visiting professor at Imperial College\, London\, and Nottingham University. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor McNaughton was a standout Keynote speaker at the 2010 RTSA Conference on Railway Excellence in Wellington and we are delighted that is able to speak to us during a very short visit to Auckland. \nAndrew’s presentation is very relevant to New Zealand given the current government interest in developing regional rail services to connect our major cities to regional centres. He will draw upon his worldwide experience and demonstrate how using faster rail services to increase the distance that people can travel within defined time periods\, through faster rail services\, such as 30 minute cross city trips\, 1 hour commutes and 2 hour regional connectivity\, results in new economic activity and land use development opportunities. \nThe presentation will  be broadcast as a live webinar for those unable to attend in person. \nPlease use the registration link below to indicate whether you will attend the presentation in Auckland or join online. DESCRIPTION:Cleaning the Otira Tunnel \nThe RTSA NZ invite you to an encore of the above presentation in Wellington on Wednesday 31 July\, which will also be available to view as a live webinar. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNeil Mason\, Managing Director of Vitruvius Ltd\, has kindly agreed to make an encore performance of his fascinating presentation on cleaning the Otira Rail Tunnel\, originally given to the RTSA in April\, so that a wider New Zealand and international audience can participate. \nSituated on the Midland Line between Otira and Arthurs Pass in the South Island\, KiwiRail’s Otira rail Tunnel measures an impressive 8.566 km in length and runs through a harsh but fragile alpine environment. At the time of its opening in 1923 it was the longest tunnel in the southern hemisphere. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor the past 30 years the tunnel has conveyed trains carrying uncovered coal wagons up the steep 1 in 33 gradient from Otira\, combined with the ventilation system has deposited sand and coal dust on the floor and walls creating a “mountain range” balanced along the top of power and communication cables. A creative method had to be developed\, using innovative technology\, to remove the deposits by water jets and then remove the particulates from the water to comply with stringent environmental consent conditions\, before discharge into the nearby river. \nNeil has led many interesting and challenging rail projects through his 27 years in the rail industry in NZ and the UK. DESCRIPTION:Operating the World’s longest & heaviest train  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn behalf of RTSA NZ we’d like to invite you to the above presentation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn Australia’s Pilbara region trains convey processed iron ore from the mines to the ports. These trains are among some of the largest in the world. In a normal day\, these trains will move between 1 and 3 million tonnes of Iron Ore over a nominal haul distance of between 300 – 400 kms.  Due to the regional conditions and market variability of the commodity business\, these railroads have had to constantly optimise and stretch their operating technology to maximise their return on investment. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis presentation provides an overview of the operational considerations that were assessed prior to the operation of the world-record train. This train challenged the operating paradigms at BHPIO and presented a number of unique and complex problems to solve. It also provided valuable data for the business as it endeavoured to grow its operating footprint in a low capital investment environment.  This presentation will review the operation and its operating infrastructure and technology platforms whilst specifically reviewing the operation of the world-record train. \nTrent Ludlow is KiwiRail’s Regional Lead – Upper South Island.
