SUMMARY:International Workshop on Railway Brake Research (On-line)
DESCRIPTION:Brakes are indispensable and safety-critical systems for all types of railway trains including passenger (high-speed\, metro\, tram\, etc.) and freight trains (heavy-haul\, intermodal\, etc.). Safe and efficient railway operations require a good understanding of brakes from various parties including drivers\, maintenance crews\, manufacturers\, and design engineers. Brake research helps to expand and deepen the knowledge about railway train brakes. \nDriven by the rapid development of Intelligent Transport Systems and the ever-increasing demands for faster and heavier trains\, as well as energy savings and sustainability\, railway brake research has seen a new wave of interests from the industry and academia. Under these situations\, we propose an International Workshop on Railway Brake Research to boost brake research. The International Workshop on Railway Brake Research will be virtually hosted by CRE of Central Queensland University (Australia) and DIEF of University of Florence (Italy) from 19-20 September 2023. SUMMARY:NZ Chapter Event: Smart Tamp: The Future of Track Maintenance (Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:The Railway Technical Society are pleased to invite you to a webinar discussing ‘Smart Tamp: The Future of Track Maintenance’.\nDesign tamping helps reduce wear and tear on track and rolling stock\, lowers traction costs\, and reduces track maintenance costs by up to 30%. Network Rail can benefit from this in two ways: long-term cost savings and short-term “quick win” savings. \nSmart Tamp is focused on utilizing geodetical track data to maintain railway tracks through tamping. \nInnoTamp was a ground-breaking research project that developed a process that will improve the affordability of design tamping so that it can be rolled out to more of the national rail network – on regular as well as high-speed lines. What tasks were implemented to achieve the goal?: The tasks implemented to achieve the goal were computing relative track parameters from RILA data\, identifying track areas in need of tamping\, creating designs and tamping files in design software\, checking infrastructure clearances against design\, checking ballast quantities against design\, and trialling the results on a live railway. \nNetwork Rail in the United Kingdom has implemented Fugro’s RILA system\, an innovative survey system\, to generate geodetical data on some parts of the network. This data is then used for a variety of projects\, such as providing gauging information for the introduction of new rolling stock and for track renewals. So far\, the RILA system has surveyed over 250 000 km in the UK and has a coverage of over 70% of the rail network. \nWe hope to see you there! \nClick here to register for this event on the Engineering New Zealand website.

This will also focus on their views on the upcoming challenges and opportunities that the current historic level of investment in rail in New Zealand brings. \nCyclone Gabrielle Update – An additional presentation will be made by Daniel Headifen on the effect of Cyclone Gabrielle on the Hawkes Bay rail network and the recovery work that is current\nunderway on it. \nSimon Wood has worked in the rail industry since 1978 in the UK\, New Zealand and Australia. Currently self-employed (via Larswood Consulting) his numerous contributions to the\nRTSA include been a past Executive Chair of the RTSA\, being the longest serving committee member of the RTSA NZ Chapter and former Chapter Chair and being a participant of various RTSA sub committees and CORE organising groups. Alongside this Simon has made significant contributions to the New Zealand rail industry\, particularly in the upgrades of the Auckland Metro network. \nWalter Rushbrook commenced working in rail in 1997 and has held a variety of technical\, operational\, and managerial roles predominately in the rail industry. He has positively influenced some of the most significant railway works in this country over the past 25 years. These include improving the New Zealand rail’s safety leadership\, asset management\, and technical capacity. He has also assisted in successful business case preparation as well as holding significant roles in many award-winning projects. He is currently KiwiRail’s Executive GM Interislander Business Readiness. \nDaniel Headifen is leading the Hawkes Bay Cyclone Recovery for KiwiRail to reopen the Palmerston North Gisborne Line (PNGL) to Napier. DESCRIPTION:Overview\nRio Tinto’s autonomous train is 2.4km long\, consists of three locomotives and carries around 28\,000 tonnes of iron ore\, it travels over 280km. It’s the world’s first fully autonomous\, long distance\, heavy-haul rail network. The trains are giant autonomous robots because once they are set on their course\, they make all the decisions. \nThe AutoHaul™ team monitor the trains remotely from the Operations Centre in Perth (over 1\,500km away)\, they set the route and once the train is running the on-board computers and the computers in the Operations Centre take over and control the train. SUMMARY:RTSA On-line Event: Adhesion condition estimation between wheels and rails
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThis presentation will discuss how the adhesion condition between wheel and rail can be estimated and how the braking performance of a rail vehicle can be improved utilising the obtained adhesion information. The methodologies used for adhesion estimation are based on specially designed algorithm development\, numerical modelling\, and scaled laboratory experiment (Hardware-in-loop) techniques were used to analyse the braking performance. The presentation will also discuss the basics of wheel-rail contact mechanics\, rail braking control system\, friction\, and adhesion process at wheel-rail interface. \nAn ideal braking system not only ensures safety and ride comfort but also attracts significant cost-benefits through optimum on-time operation and reduction in wheel-rail damage processes. For such a braking system\, the adhesion condition information between the wheel and rail at contact interfaces during rail vehicle operation is essential. The adhesion estimation for the braking system is a complex task because it is influenced by design\, operational and environmental factors. Cameron Hyndman will be talking about Downer’s approach towards Digital Engineering in recent years\, which has led to multiple digital solutions implemented on rail and other projects\, including machine avoidance\, digital permits and the use of A.I. to improve safety. \nSiva Sivapakkiam is KiwiRail’s Chief Operating Officer – Rail Operations\, overseeing all operational parts of the business including commercial revenue\, freight logistics\, networks infrastructure\, engineering\, and rolling stock asset services\, areas which account for around 3000 of KiwiRail’s staff. Siva joined KiwiRail in 2015 and has worked in various leadership roles in his time there. Before moving to KiwiRail Siva had more than 15 years in the roading and construction industries both as a consultant and as a contractor. \nCameron Hyndman has 25 years’ experience in design\, construction\, and digital technologies. He was a key driving force behind the development and implementation of machine control and avoidance technology and other digital innovations on The Trentham to Upper Hutt Project – KiwiRail’s first BIM enabled project. DESCRIPTION:Overview\nAttend this webinar to understand related risks in the rail environment and undertake a review of projects and the complexities encountered. \nThis presentation will outline: \n\nlearnings from recent rail projects\ntunnel environments where aspects of these complexities were encountered\nbrief introduction to the safety critical importance of Traction Power Earthing and Bonding systems.\n\nAdditional information\nManaging earthing related risk in the rail environment requires approaches that can be significantly different to those used for typical HV power systems. Hazardous voltages may be present not only under fault conditions but also due to the flow of traction currents under normal operations. Current draw of moving trains combined with currents injected by regenerative breaking\, results in a power system load flow analysis where the connection points of multiple sources and multiple loads move based on timetables. \nTypical earthing design approaches\, applicable to above ground meshed power systems\, are often difficult to implement in constrained tunnel environments where parallel exposure lengths are significant and available real estate is minimal. This combined with significantly higher likelihood of the presence of people\, adds additional complexity to earthing system design. \nAbout the speaker\nLachlan McKerrow\, Principal Engineer\, Safearth \nSince 1999 Lachlan has been in the discipline of earthing providing consulting expertise to a range of key infrastructure projects in the industrial\, transport and energy sectors. Now a Principal Engineer\, Lachlan is responsible for leading a team of consultants servicing the defence infrastructure\, rail\, tunnelling\, major construction as well as the renewable energy sectors. SUMMARY:NZ Chapter event: City Rail Link Contract 9 - Britomart East
DESCRIPTION:Join the RTSA NZ Chapter online at 12:30-1:30pm NZDT on the 29th September to hear about City Rail Link (CRL) Contract 9 (Britomart East). This project reconfigures the underground junction at the east end of Britomart Station (to be renamed Waitemata Station when City Rail Link opens). It includes upgrade from ballast to slab track to match the CRL tunnels\, rail systems and structural modifications to match. This is a critical piece of work to ensure that CRL can achieve full capacity. Being in a very constrained site with limited access and challenging operational conditions\, it is being designed and constructed in multiple stages over several years. It is approximately half built\, and detailed design of the final stage is nearing completion. This presentation will give an overview of the design objectives\, development\, and staging\, as well as the construction to date. \nClick here to register. \nSpeaker\nThis presentation will be delivered by Tim Smith (Design Package Manager for Aurecon)\, with Jaco Vorster (Engineering Manager\, Martinus Rail) \nTim Smith is an Associate in Rail and Mass Transit at Aurecon. He has been the Design Package Manager for Britomart East right from the initial investigation through to detailed design. He also helped manage and lead the alignment designs for several wider network projects including Mt Eden Single Line Enabling works\, Otahuhu 3rd Main and the Strand crossover. He is the alignment subject matter expert for CRL Owner Verifier. He also brings international experience from the Trackwork Services Alliance with KBR in Sydney. \nJaco is the Engineering Manager for Martinus New Zealand. He has been involved in various aspects of CRL’s ballasted and ballastless trackform design and construction packages. Jaco brings practical application and an understanding of integrated systems to lead Martinus New Zealand’s systems assurance for design & engineering teams. DESCRIPTION:Cybersecurity is a hot topic worldwide with attacks being performed against multiple domains. Over the past 5 years there has been a major increase in attacks on the railway system with a number denial of service and ransomware attacks being announced. \nThe railway industry is clearly a target for cyber criminals\, and it is clearly hard to defend due to the inherent geographical distribution and technologically speaking the railway systems are designed with safety and availability rather than any focus on security. The railway becomes more of a target now as it starts to move to computer-based systems using IP protocols and wireless communication and networking. \nThere has been a recent release of a CENELEC Standard (EN 50701) to deal with Cyber Security for Railway Applications where this builds on the underlying standards such as ISO 27001 and IEC 62443. \nJoin subject matter experts as they provide an overview of why cybersecurity is important in the railway industry\, highlighting attacks which have been executed on railways and asking the question as to whether your systems are protected\, with your railway network and assets being monitored for attacks. \n  \nThis is a free Engineers Australia event.  Click on the link below to register

DESCRIPTION:About the event\nInvolving the excavation of 15 million cubic metres of material\, the Genoa-Milan High-Speed\, High-Capacity Railway Line\, also known as Terzo Valico dei Giovi (Terzo Valico) is one of Italy’s largest engineering projects\, consisting of a 37km tunnel through steep mountainous terrain. The project has created thousands of jobs for local economies while putting sustainability at its core. \nLed by the Webuild Group\, this large infrastructure will reduce travel time and carbon emissions – allowing trains to travel at a maximum speed of 250 km/h\, crossing the Genoa and Alessandria provinces\, and 12 municipalities\, with Milan as the final destination. \nJoin us as experts from the project discuss the challenges faced and innovations that took place during the design and construction of the tunnel and how this will change the approach for future projects addressing the sustainable benefits. \nWho should attend\nThis webinar is relevant for civil engineers\, tunnelling engineers\, rail and road engineers\, transportation engineering and design consultants\, as well as those working in the construction industry. \nYou do not need to be a RTSA Member or  Engineers Australia member to attend.  Click on the link below to register \n  \nSpeakers: \nLeonardo Di Gati\,Responsible for the Design of Underground Works\, Terzo Valico dei Giovi – Genova Junction – One Project\, Webuild\nLeonardo Di Gati has earned a master’s degree in civil engineering from University of Illinois in 2000\, and\, since then\, he has been actively working in tunnelling and geotechnical projects in Italy\, Europe and USA. Starting as field engineer and ending up as Project Manager\, during the years he has developed a deep knowledge of all the problems connected with the design and construction of Underground Projects\, dealing also with different specific activities\, like tendering\, feasibility studies\, preliminary and final design\, monitoring and construction. He has been involved in the design and construction of several tunnels\, including the High Speed/Capacity railway line Bologna to Florence\, TBM tunnelling projects in Turkey\, the Autostrada Pedemontana Lombarda highway system\, and the SA-RC highway. His key experience applies to conventional tunnelling in different geotechnical situations\, from weak soil\, to mixed soil\, to hard rock\, with both conventional and TBM method. Since 2014 he has been working in Terzo Valico jobsites\, and currently he is responsible for the Design of Underground Works\, for Webuild\, in the Terzo Valico dei Giovi – Genova Junction – One Project. \nRemo Grandori\, Responsible for TBM\, Plant & Equipment\, Webuild\nSince 1984 Remo has been working in the field of mechanized tunneling\, starting as a TBM site engineer\, and ending up as Technical Director\, for some of the most important tunnel projects executed worldwide. During its career has been involved in the execution of over 130 TBM tunnel projects\, for about 1100 km of tunnels bored in the most different geologies and conditions. Furthermore\, since 1987\, he has participated in the development of several innovations in tunnel and TBMs design acting as Consultant to Clients\, Contractors and TBM manufactures. Its cooperation with Webuild group goes back to the late eighties and continued until today\, having been involved in the study and execution of several major TBM projects in North and South America\, China\, Europe\, Africa and lately in Australia. From 1996 to 2007 Mr. Grandori taught a course at the Sapienza University of Rome as a contract professor on mechanized tunnel excavations. \nCarmine D’Auria\, Health and Safety Manager\, Terzo Valico dei Giovi – Genova Junction – One Project\, Webuild \nSince 1997 Carmine has been working for Webuild in the field of construction of large railway and road infrastructures and has gained considerable experience in the construction of very long and complex tunnels. Graduated in Environmental and Territorial Engineering\, since the beginning of his career he has been involved in the health and safety of workers in difficult environments\, in tunnels built both in traditional and mechanized excavation\, addressing various complex problems such as grisou\, asbestos and emergency management in hard places to reach. Among the projects in which he has worked\, we can mention the Bologna-Florence High Speed Rail Section\, the Salerno-Reggio Calabria Motorway 5th and 6th Macrolotto\, the reconstruction of the Polcevera Viaduct (Genova San Giorgio Bridge) in Genoa and the Milan-Genoa High Speed/Capacity line called Terzo Valico dei Giovi – Genova Junction – One Project. \nQ&A Panelists: \nRichard Graham\, Project Director di Forrestfield Airport Link\, Webuild – NRW JV\nRichard Graham graduated in Civil Engineering from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh\, UK. He has over 40 years’ experience of working in heavy international construction\, primarily in the hydropower\, tunneling and metro sectors. Currently he is the Project Director for the Salini Impregilo – NRW JV undertaking the 2 x 8km long Forrestfield Airport Link in Perth\, Australia. Immediately prior to this he was responsible for the Design & Construction of the 42 km long Orange Metro Line in Riyadh\, Saudi Arabia\, the Red Line North Metro in Doha\, Qatar\, and the 25km long STEP deep sewer tunnel in Abu Dhabi. \nJacob Latter Construction Director- Rail\, Webuild\nJacob is an experienced rail industry expert able to act in Delivery Leadership or precontract capacity\, both Technical and commercial. In addition to this Jacob has significant strategic development experience in both large-scale rail project delivery and business development. He joined Webuild 2021 with over 20 years engineering\, construction & maintenance experience in the Rail industry in Australia. Key areas of expertise include Project delivery across key client portfolios including ARTC\, MTM\, RTIO\, extensive experience in resources\, freight\, urban\, metro and light rail environments\, development of Systems & Engineering Assurance Strategies & Teams for complex infrastructure projects. DESCRIPTION:Click here to Register \nJoin the RTSA NZ Chapter online at 12:30-1:30pm NZST Wednesday 20th April\, for a presentation from Brent Lancaster\, Programme Director for the Auckland Metro Programme\, on the Auckland Christmas Block of Line. He will talk about the Projects; all the planning and co-ordination required; how any changes were managed during the block of line and the road-bridging operation which allowed freight to be shut-down for a period. \nIt was one of the biggest and most ambitious block of lines in New Zealand rail history. Between 26 December 2021 and 23 January 2022\, more than 1100 KiwiRail staff from around the country and contractors carried out a huge programme of works to improve the rail network in Auckland. It was a huge success with all works completed on time. The majority of the improvements are on Projects that will ensure that Auckland’s rail network is fit-for-purpose when the City Rail Link opens in late 2024. This work will improve resilience across the network as well increase capacity for freight and passenger services. Importantly\, it will also make a contribution to reducing carbon emissions in New Zealand’s transport sector. \nWork was completed on the following Projects: \n\nExtending electrification to Pukekohe\nThird Main – Wiri to Quay\nRNIP Auckland Metro Programme\nRNGM Formation and ballast cleaning\nCity Rail Link: Mt Eden\, Newmarket and Britomart
