SUMMARY:Qld Chapter Webinar Event: Introduction to rail traction power earthing and bonding systems
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nAttend this webinar to understand related risks in the rail environment and undertake a review of projects and the complexities encountered. \nThis presentation will outline: \n\nlearnings from recent rail projects\ntunnel environments where aspects of these complexities were encountered\nbrief introduction to the safety critical importance of Traction Power Earthing and Bonding systems.\n\nAdditional information\nManaging earthing related risk in the rail environment requires approaches that can be significantly different to those used for typical HV power systems. Hazardous voltages may be present not only under fault conditions but also due to the flow of traction currents under normal operations. Current draw of moving trains combined with currents injected by regenerative breaking\, results in a power system load flow analysis where the connection points of multiple sources and multiple loads move based on timetables. \nTypical earthing design approaches\, applicable to above ground meshed power systems\, are often difficult to implement in constrained tunnel environments where parallel exposure lengths are significant and available real estate is minimal. This combined with significantly higher likelihood of the presence of people\, adds additional complexity to earthing system design. \nAbout the speaker\nLachlan McKerrow\, Principal Engineer\, Safearth \nSince 1999 Lachlan has been in the discipline of earthing providing consulting expertise to a range of key infrastructure projects in the industrial\, transport and energy sectors. Now a Principal Engineer\, Lachlan is responsible for leading a team of consultants servicing the defence infrastructure\, rail\, tunnelling\, major construction as well as the renewable energy sectors. Lachlan graduated with BE (Elec) from the University of Newcastle in 1994 and worked for a small consulting firm servicing the mining and coal loading industry in Newcastle. SUMMARY:NZ Chapter event: City Rail Link Contract 9 - Britomart East
DESCRIPTION:Join the RTSA NZ Chapter online at 12:30-1:30pm NZDT on the 29th September to hear about City Rail Link (CRL) Contract 9 (Britomart East). This project reconfigures the underground junction at the east end of Britomart Station (to be renamed Waitemata Station when City Rail Link opens). It includes upgrade from ballast to slab track to match the CRL tunnels\, rail systems and structural modifications to match. This is a critical piece of work to ensure that CRL can achieve full capacity. Being in a very constrained site with limited access and challenging operational conditions\, it is being designed and constructed in multiple stages over several years. It is approximately half built\, and detailed design of the final stage is nearing completion. This presentation will give an overview of the design objectives\, development\, and staging\, as well as the construction to date. \nClick here to register. \nSpeaker\nThis presentation will be delivered by Tim Smith (Design Package Manager for Aurecon)\, with Jaco Vorster (Engineering Manager\, Martinus Rail) \nTim Smith is an Associate in Rail and Mass Transit at Aurecon. He has been the Design Package Manager for Britomart East right from the initial investigation through to detailed design. He also helped manage and lead the alignment designs for several wider network projects including Mt Eden Single Line Enabling works\, Otahuhu 3rd Main and the Strand crossover. He is the alignment subject matter expert for CRL Owner Verifier. He also brings international experience from the Trackwork Services Alliance with KBR in Sydney. \nJaco is the Engineering Manager for Martinus New Zealand. He has been involved in various aspects of CRL’s ballasted and ballastless trackform design and construction packages. Jaco brings practical application and an understanding of integrated systems to lead Martinus New Zealand’s systems assurance for design & engineering teams. He worked on various international multidisciplinary rail projects in Australia\, the USA\, Europe and Africa. \nAn opportunity for Q&A with the team will follow the presentation.

DESCRIPTION:Cybersecurity is a hot topic worldwide with attacks being performed against multiple domains. Over the past 5 years there has been a major increase in attacks on the railway system with a number denial of service and ransomware attacks being announced. \nThe railway industry is clearly a target for cyber criminals\, and it is clearly hard to defend due to the inherent geographical distribution and technologically speaking the railway systems are designed with safety and availability rather than any focus on security. The railway becomes more of a target now as it starts to move to computer-based systems using IP protocols and wireless communication and networking. \nThere has been a recent release of a CENELEC Standard (EN 50701) to deal with Cyber Security for Railway Applications where this builds on the underlying standards such as ISO 27001 and IEC 62443. \nJoin subject matter experts as they provide an overview of why cybersecurity is important in the railway industry\, highlighting attacks which have been executed on railways and asking the question as to whether your systems are protected\, with your railway network and assets being monitored for attacks. \n  \nThis is a free Engineers Australia event.  Click on the link below to register

DESCRIPTION:About the event\nInvolving the excavation of 15 million cubic metres of material\, the Genoa-Milan High-Speed\, High-Capacity Railway Line\, also known as Terzo Valico dei Giovi (Terzo Valico) is one of Italy’s largest engineering projects\, consisting of a 37km tunnel through steep mountainous terrain. Starting as field engineer and ending up as Project Manager\, during the years he has developed a deep knowledge of all the problems connected with the design and construction of Underground Projects\, dealing also with different specific activities\, like tendering\, feasibility studies\, preliminary and final design\, monitoring and construction. He has been involved in the design and construction of several tunnels\, including the High Speed/Capacity railway line Bologna to Florence\, TBM tunnelling projects in Turkey\, the Autostrada Pedemontana Lombarda highway system\, and the SA-RC highway. His key experience applies to conventional tunnelling in different geotechnical situations\, from weak soil\, to mixed soil\, to hard rock\, with both conventional and TBM method. Since 2014 he has been working in Terzo Valico jobsites\, and currently he is responsible for the Design of Underground Works\, for Webuild\, in the Terzo Valico dei Giovi – Genova Junction – One Project. \nRemo Grandori\, Responsible for TBM\, Plant & Equipment\, Webuild\nSince 1984 Remo has been working in the field of mechanized tunneling\, starting as a TBM site engineer\, and ending up as Technical Director\, for some of the most important tunnel projects executed worldwide. During its career has been involved in the execution of over 130 TBM tunnel projects\, for about 1100 km of tunnels bored in the most different geologies and conditions. Furthermore\, since 1987\, he has participated in the development of several innovations in tunnel and TBMs design acting as Consultant to Clients\, Contractors and TBM manufactures. Its cooperation with Webuild group goes back to the late eighties and continued until today\, having been involved in the study and execution of several major TBM projects in North and South America\, China\, Europe\, Africa and lately in Australia. From 1996 to 2007 Mr. Grandori taught a course at the Sapienza University of Rome as a contract professor on mechanized tunnel excavations. \nCarmine D’Auria\, Health and Safety Manager\, Terzo Valico dei Giovi – Genova Junction – One Project\, Webuild \nSince 1997 Carmine has been working for Webuild in the field of construction of large railway and road infrastructures and has gained considerable experience in the construction of very long and complex tunnels. Graduated in Environmental and Territorial Engineering\, since the beginning of his career he has been involved in the health and safety of workers in difficult environments\, in tunnels built both in traditional and mechanized excavation\, addressing various complex problems such as grisou\, asbestos and emergency management in hard places to reach. Among the projects in which he has worked\, we can mention the Bologna-Florence High Speed Rail Section\, the Salerno-Reggio Calabria Motorway 5th and 6th Macrolotto\, the reconstruction of the Polcevera Viaduct (Genova San Giorgio Bridge) in Genoa and the Milan-Genoa High Speed/Capacity line called Terzo Valico dei Giovi – Genova Junction – One Project. \nQ&A Panelists: \nRichard Graham\, Project Director di Forrestfield Airport Link\, Webuild – NRW JV\nRichard Graham graduated in Civil Engineering from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh\, UK. In addition to this Jacob has significant strategic development experience in both large-scale rail project delivery and business development. He joined Webuild 2021 with over 20 years engineering\, construction & maintenance experience in the Rail industry in Australia. DESCRIPTION:Click here to Register \nJoin the RTSA NZ Chapter online at 12:30-1:30pm NZST Wednesday 20th April\, for a presentation from Brent Lancaster\, Programme Director for the Auckland Metro Programme\, on the Auckland Christmas Block of Line. He will talk about the Projects; all the planning and co-ordination required; how any changes were managed during the block of line and the road-bridging operation which allowed freight to be shut-down for a period. \nIt was one of the biggest and most ambitious block of lines in New Zealand rail history. Between 26 December 2021 and 23 January 2022\, more than 1100 KiwiRail staff from around the country and contractors carried out a huge programme of works to improve the rail network in Auckland. It was a huge success with all works completed on time. The majority of the improvements are on Projects that will ensure that Auckland’s rail network is fit-for-purpose when the City Rail Link opens in late 2024. This work will improve resilience across the network as well increase capacity for freight and passenger services. A short AGM for the NZ Chapter will also take place. \nRegister here. \nAbout the event\nThe Rail Network Investment Plan sets out planned network maintenance\, management\, renewal and improvement work on the national rail network over the next three years (2021 – 2024). \nAnnounced on the 29th June 2021 by the Minister of Transport\, the inaugural Rail Network Investment Programme represents a historic change in the way the rail network is planned and funded in New Zealand\, with network infrastructure funding through the National Land Transport Fund. This presentation will provide an overview of these new arrangements and the role of RNIP in supporting future rail investment. \nHelen Rogers\, Group General Manager\, Government Relations – Policy & Funding at KiwiRail\, will be presenting. Helen leads KiwiRail’s collaboration with government agencies on transport policy\, funding and investment frameworks. She joined KiwiRail in 2014\, working in senior finance\, funding and strategy roles. Prior to KiwiRail Helen worked as a consultant leading finance transformation programmes\, after several years as Financial Controller for Wellington City Council. \n  \nKiwiRail’s Asset Management Plan is a key building block for the Rail Network Investment Plan. \nThis presentation will discuss the approach taken to develop KiwiRail’s Network Infrastructure Asset Management Plan and the detailed forward works plan which underpins the Rail Network Investment Plan. This event will be held online at 7:00-8:00pm AEDT on the 6th December 2021. \nThe address will examine how\, as engineers\, we need to make connections and networks across the industry; highlighting some catalysts that inspire step change\, pushing us outside the boxes we may have created for ourselves. \nThe address will also look at what organisations such as the Railway Division of IMechE and the RTSA should focus on to broaden the horizons of engineers and engineering organisations as we move to meet the challenges we face on the journey to build and maintain our railways. \nClick here to register. \nSpeakers\n \nJames Collinson\nChair\, IMechE Railway Division and Head of Design – South East\, Network Rail \nJames started his career in British Rail in 1992 as a Graduate Engineering Management Trainee. He subsequently spent a period of time at train maintenance depots in largely engineering management roles. \nIn September 2000 James moved to Railtrack\, then Network Rail\, working with Infrastructure and Rail Vehicle engineers and operations teams\, giving him the ‘system’ approach to engineering that he has still has today. \nJames established the Network Certification Body (NCB)\, a Network Rail subsidiary business in 2011. As NCB’s Managing Director he led the business in providing independent engineering certification services to both infrastructure and rail vehicle projects. \nSince 2018 James has been the Head of Design in the Southern Region of Network Rail\, leading the large team of multi-discipline design and testing engineers that support rail infrastructure capital delivery projects. \n \nCarolyn Griffiths\nDirector of Irish Rail \nCarolyn’s career in the Rail industry spans from shop floor technician to Board Director. She has worked in heavy rail\, metro and light rail; in engineering operations\, manufacturing and establishing new rail systems both in the UK and overseas (living and working in Singapore\, Sweden and Germany). \nShe is a Board member of Irish Rail and recent Board member of AES Engineering. Her last full time role was Chief Inspector of the Rail Accident Investigation Branch UK; she founded the organisation and lead its operations for 10 years\, reporting to the Secretary of State for Transport. \nShe is a Board member of the Royal Academy of Engineering ; Past President and current member of Council for the IMechE and recent Board member of Engineering Council. DESCRIPTION:Join the Railway Technical Society of Australasia New Zealand Chapter online with Dr Philip Laird to discuss ‘Mainline Track Upgrades: Auckland – Wellington and Sydney – Melbourne’ at 12:30-1:30pm NZT on the 17th November 2021. \nRegister here. \nAuckland and Wellington are linked by the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) narrow gauge railway of length 681km. Sydney and Melbourne are now linked by a standard gauge railway of length 960 km. Both railways include challenging terrain. \nAn outline is given of former improvements for each of the NIMT railway and the Melbourne to Sydney railway that include deviations for grade easing. Many of the NIMT deviations have led to a reduction in distance. By way of contrast\, each NSW main south line deviation has resulted in extra distance. Further contrasts include electrification of most of the NIMT during the 1980s\, and\, the NIMT gaining Centralised traffic control signalling for most of its length some 42 years ahead of the Melbourne to Sydney railway. \nSome planned and possible upgrades are outlined for the NIMT. The Australian Cancer council have published that “diesel engine exhaust emissions exposure is the second most common cancer-causing agent (carcinogen) affecting workers in this country – only behind ultraviolet radiation exposure”. Accordingly\, in the absence of sunlight\, this therefore makes it the most common cancer-causing agent in the underground working environment. \nRegulators and Industries throughout the world have increased their focus on air quality in the workplace. The dangers of dust/crystalline silica have been well reported and have led to new exposure limits. Diesel particulate matter (DPM) has received much less press\, however exposure limits for DPM will be halved by 2023 in the EU and UK. \nPinssar was created in 2014 with the sole purpose of helping underground operations to understand their DPM load and how they can minimize the exposure risk to their employees. This presentation is open to all members and non-members. SUMMARY:NZ Chapter Event: Design and Construction of the KiwiRail Tar Barrel Tunnel Bypass\, Main North Line
DESCRIPTION:Join the Railway Technical Society of Australasia New Zealand Chapter online for a presentation on the design and construction of the KiwiRail Tar Barrel tunnel bypass\, Main North Line by Rob Hunter\, and Gilles Langlais at 12:30-1:30pm NZDT on Tuesday 5th October 2021. \nRegister here. \nDeterioration of Tunnel 21 had been documented back to as early as the 1970’s\, and following the 2016 Kaikoura and Seddon Earthquakes\, suffered more damage.  With a low resilience to future earthquakes and general deterioration of the concrete lining\, coupled with tight clearances\, track subgrade and formation in poor condition\, and a TSR of 15km/hr\, a new rail alignment was proposed.  This presentation details how the project team managed to accelerate the design and tender process\, provides an overview of construction and some of the key challenges that were faced\, and summaries a few of the key lessons learned. \nSpeakers\nRob Hunter\, Project Manager at Tonkin & Taylor \nRob is a Project Manager and Engineer for Tonkin & Taylor.  In mid-2018 he helped to establish the project team and assisted in the project\, design and tender management through to mid-2019.  He then provided client-side project management throughout the construction phase alongside roles in monitoring\, surveillance and quality assurance\, and contract management. \nGilles Langlais\, Project Manager at HEB Construction \nGilles is a Project Manager for HEB Construction. He joined the TBTB project in August 2019 as a Structures Project Engineer where he helped to deliver the new Ruakanakana underpass structure. SUMMARY:NZ Chapter Event: Remote monitoring and the Kaikoura earthquake recovery webinar
DESCRIPTION:Join the Railway Technical Society of Australasia and Daniel Headifen online at 12:30-1:30pm (NZST) on the 14th September\, to hear about how remote monitoring and operational controls were used in the reopening of the Main North Line following the Kaikoura Earthquake and then contributed to improving its ongoing resilience. Register here. \nThe 2016 Kaikoura Earthquake severely damaged and put out of use the Main North Line railway and State Highway 1 in the upper areas of the South Island.  There was immense pressure to open the transport corridor as quickly as possible whilst minimising the risk from the main earthquake-generated landslides. While it became clear that the MNL railway could be opened quicker than the road\, to do so in a safe manner would require the running of trains under a different operational framework than prior to the earthquake. This presentation details the operational controls used with particularly attention paid to how remote monitoring was utilised as well as  weather monitoring and Trigger Action Response Plans. \nDaniel is a Programme Director for KiwiRail’s Capital Project’s team. Following the 2016 Kaikoura Earthquake he was seconded from KiwiRail into the North Canterbury Transport Infrastructure Recovery (NCTIR) alliance. For the first year he was part of the NCTIR alliance management team responsible for rail design aspects of the recovery and coordination between KiwiRail and NCTIR. In this time he has worked across a number of horizontal infrastructure projects\, carving an interest in soil-structure interaction and construction management. \nPart 2: Tunnel presentation by Aurecon\nLouise\, Harry and Shu Fan will together talk about the tunnel design on the NRU. \nIn Northland Rail Upgrade Project (NRU)\, Shu Fan was the tunnel design lead for the 7 out of 13 most challenging tunnels of the North Auckland Line (NAL). Shu Fan Chau is an Associate in tunnels and the NZ Tunnel Lead at Aurecon. In addition to TBM tunnelling\, his wide-ranging tunnel expertise includes mined tunnels and caverns\, drill and blast tunnelling\, immersed tube tunnelling\, cut- and-cover tunnels\, deep excavation\, underground structures\, site formation and slope works. Shu Fan has worked on Waterview Tunnels in Auckland\, West Gate Tunnels in Melbourne and is currently working in City Rail Link. \nHarry Asche is a Design Director in Aurecon and he has worked on tunnels in New Zealand\, Australia\, UK and HK.  He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Queensland and is the current President of the Australian Tunnelling Society. \nLouise Wotton is a computational designer at Aurecon\, Computational design works to improve delivery through creation of custom digital tools and the development of automated pipelines to produce consistent\, high quality deliverables. \nDuring the North Auckland Line upgrade Aurecon developed a custom software package to generate rail gauges along the alignment and run clearance analysis checks. DESCRIPTION:Join the RTSA New Zealand Chapter and Mike Keenan (KiwiRail) to hear about the history of how rail bridges in New Zealand are “rated”. This presentation is being held as an RTSA New Zealand online meeting. \nKiwiRail maintains a substantial rail infrastructure network of which its bridge stock are an essential component. These bridges have been developed over the 160 year life time of New Zealand’s railway and are a key enabler of the networks overall capacity. How these bridges are “rated” to determine their load carrying ability has likewise developed over time. This presentation will describe the background to choices made\, the influence of other overseas railways\, how the rating is now done and some of the challenges that the network faces. \nMike Keenan is part of the team responsible for engineering oversight of KiwiRail’s structures assets.
