DESCRIPTION:Join the RTSA New Zealand Chapter online for a presentation on the Need for Power – Reinforcement of the Wellington Electrified Area (WEA) Traction Electricity Supply\, Presented by Richard Catlow. \nThe Wellington Network is undergoing significant investment in renewals and upgrades\, part of the Wellington Metro Upgrade Programme. Part of this Programme involves preparing the network for higher frequency and longer electric passenger metro trains. One of the infrastructure requirements for this is the need for more capacity in the traction power supply system\, resulting in the need for upgraded and additional substations across the network. This presentation will focus on the development of the substations project and its objectives\, with a special focus on the power modelling completed and the interpretation of the results\, which have identified a number of existing areas requiring improvement and the need for a number of additional traction substations. \nSpeakers\nRichard Catlow\, Director of Energy Systems at SNC-Lavelin\nMichael McKeon\, Project Director at Kiwi Rail\nKarl Strode-Penny\, Rail Operations Specialist at KSP Consulting Limited \nThe key speaker will be electrical engineer Richard Catlow\, with an introduction from Michael McKeon – Project Director at KiwiRail\, supported by Karl Strode-Penny who prepared the timetable models used to drive the power simulation\, and coordinated the power study for KiwiRail. Richard is a Director of Energy Systems at SNC-Lavalin in Canada and previously lived and worked in New Zealand and was intensively involved in the commissioning of the new Auckland metro railway electrification in the early 2010s. DESCRIPTION:Join the Railway Technical Society of Australasia online to hear about Auckland’s newest train station. The new Puhinui Station is in the final stages of construction and will open on 26 July. It will be an integrated facility with a bus interchange that provides a key link between Auckland International Airport and Manukau\, and is the first phase of the Airport to Botany Rapid Transit project which will extend this through to Botany in the east.\n\nThis presentation will cover the strategic purpose and objectives of the new station as well as the technical issues and challenges encountered on this landmark project. \nIt will be delivered by Leon Thomas (Design Manager for Aurecon)\, with Renata Smit (Airport to Botany Rapid Transit Programme Director for Auckland Transport) and Adrian Price (Specialist Project Manager for Auckland Transport). \nLeon is a Lead Project and Design Manager\, and Chartered Engineer working for Aurecon with over 14 years of experience in delivering complex engineering projects in commercial\, public and industrial sectors. He worked for 10 years in the United Kingdom before coming to New Zealand. As design manager for Puhinui Interchange\, Leon led the development of the design and has provided oversight throughout the construction phase. \nRenata oversees the development of investment cases for strategic transport projects in south and east Auckland. She has also been Auckland Transport’s Programme Director for the Airport to Botany Rapid Transit (A2B) programme since 2018\, overseeing the development of two key business cases for the programme and delivery of A2B’s first stage of works.  Puhinui Station forms the largest component of the first stage and will be A2B’s first station to be operational. Renata has 19 years’ experience in leading transport planning projects in both local government and consultancies in New Zealand and the UK. \nAdrian Price is a Project Management Consultant\, and has been working on the Puhinui Station project since 2016 as project manager throughout the design and Early Contractor Involvement phases\, and as Engineer’s Representative throughout the construction. He previously worked for Waka Kotahi and Auckland Transport\, where he held several roles including Public Transport Development Manager in Auckland Transport’s infrastructure team. He was involved in a range of projects around Auckland including the Ōtāhuhu Station interchange project\, grade separation of Sarawia Street level crossing in Newmarket\, and numerous rail station upgrades. DESCRIPTION:Rebuilding Rail in Post EQ Christchurch – Waltham Scenic Journeys Servicing Centre\nJoin the RTSA NZ Chapter and KiwiRail online to hear about the challenges of redeveloping and replacing damaged rail mechanical facilities following the devastating 2011 Christchurch earthquakes. \nLearn from the project team involved in the design and construction of the Waltham Scenic Journeys Servicing Centre (SJSC) featuring a fully automated carriage wash facility for the TranzAlpine and Coastal Pacific fleets as part of the staged redevelopment of the Waltham Rail Yard in Christchurch. \nKiwiRail initiated the Christchurch Mechanical Redevelopment Programme following significant damage to assets after the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes. DESCRIPTION:Join the Railway Technical Society Australasia and David Shepherd to discuss the work leading up to the introduction of the Hamilton to Auckland Commuter train services. This presentation is being held as an RTSA New Zealand online meeting – register for the event here. \n\nPresentation Abstract\nTe Huia is the passenger rail service that connects Waikato to Auckland. Capable of carrying over 500 passengers per day\, Te Huia will transform the journey of Waikato commuters travelling between Hamilton\, Huntly and Auckland. Commencing on Tuesday 6 April 2021\, this service will shape the future of rail public transport in the Waikato and help reduce New Zealand’s carbon footprint. \nA substantial amount of work has had to be undertaken to achieve what will be New Zealand’s first new intercity commuter service in several decades. Carriages have been refurbished in KiwiRail’s Woburn workshops\, a new station has been built and existing ones refurbished. New mechanical facilities for maintenance and servicing of the trains have been built from scratch and stabling infrastructure created. \nAbout the Speaker\nDavid Shepherd\, Programme Director – Strategic Commuter Rail\, KiwiRail \nDavid will talk about both the above works as well as the underlying business case for the service\, the goals of it and the aims for the future. \nWith over 20 years of private and SOE commercial business management and leadership experience\, David has worked in a number of industries including passenger transport\, customer service\, and logistics sectors. Currently Programme Manager for Commuter Rail in KiwiRail. David is working with stakeholders to deliver the first new long-distance commuter rail in New Zealand for 30 years. DESCRIPTION:This special event is co-hosted with Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) \nFelix Schmid\, Chair of the Railway Division of the IMechE for 2020-2021\, has chosen ‘The Long History and Exciting Future of Railway Systems Thinking’ as the theme for his Chair’s Address. \nHe will briefly discuss the concept of the railway as a system of systems and he will reflect on some of the good (and not so good) examples of systems thinking during the early development of the railway as a means of transport for goods and people. He will review some of the major technical breakthroughs that enable today’s high performance railways and he will reflect on some recent developments\, where he had an involvement. Felix will argue that not all technological progress is entirely fit for purpose. He will also include some thoughts on his career as an engineer and innovative educator \nSpeaker: Felix Schmid\nProgramme Director – MSc Railway Systems Engineering and Integration\, University of Birmingham\n\n\n\nBorn in Zürich\, Switzerland\, Felix Schmid graduated from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology with a degree in electrical and electronic engineering. Following a brief career in software analysis in his home country\, he moved to Manchester\, England\, to work for GEC Traction as a loco­motive con­trol systems engineer. \nIn 1982 he became a research engineer at UMIST and later a re­search assis­tant at the University of Salford. He then joined Brunel University as a lecturer in com­puter integ­rated manufacturing. In 1993\, he took up a post as a railway inspector with the Swiss Federal Office of Transport but realised quickly that he was not suited to a civil service role. After a year\, he re­turned to Britain and a senior lectureship at the University of Sheffield\, where he was employed to develop the MSc programme in Railway Systems Engineering. In 2005\, Felix and the programme transferred to the University of Birmingham and the Birmingham Centre for Railway Re­search and Education. Between 2005 and 2019\, he managed three railway related masters pro­grammes and he still supervises research in the areas of railway control\, railway operations and systems engineering. \nFelix became a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 2003. He is on the Board and the Executive of the Railway Division and has led four Railway Technical Tours between 2016 and 2019. He is currently involved in the planning of the Railway Technical Tour 2020. Felix Schmid has pro­vided contributions to many IMechE railway conferences and seminars\, including ten Young Members’ seminars. These upgrades will ease congestion on the busiest parts of the network between central Auckland and Wiri\, extend the electrified rail network from Papakura to Pukekohe\, add new stations at Drury\, and bring the overall network up to a modern standard. \nPerry Fon Sing\, Programme Director of Auckland Metro Upgrade will be presenting. \nThe Northland Rail Programme.  In January 2020 the Government announced a $109.7 million investment in Northland rail. This builds on a $94.8 million investment announced in September 2019 and $2.2 million to undertake geotechnical assessments along the route of a proposed spur line to Northport/Marsden Point\, which was completed in early 2019.  This significant Government investment is being used to: \n\nUpgrade the Northland Line between Swanson and Whangarei\, including replacing five bridges on the line;\nLowering the tracks in 13 tunnels to allow hi-cube shipping containers to be carried on the Northland Line;\nReopening the currently mothballed northern part of the Northland Line between Kauri and Otiria and building a container terminal at Otiria;\nPurchase land along the rail designated route between Oakleigh and Northport/Marsden Point.\n\n  \nWe hope to see you there! \n \nClick on the link below to register:

This includes strategy plans to improve its performance\, and the requirements for dealing with the rapid changes as a result of the many recent changes to the railway services. Examples are the introduction of the new High Capacity Metro Train\, the 75 Level Crossing Removals\, the Metro Tunnel Project\, the Hurstbridge Line Upgrade Projects\, the Mernda Rail Extension\, the upgrades of the services on most Lines\, the proposed extensions of electrification and the application of energy storage and reduced energy consumption. \nA focus in the past 10 years is on the application of new technologies to reduce energy consumption for which energy storage is a big component. The technology and commercial viability of it has evolved rapidly during this time. Metro Trains has an Energy Storage Unit installed at Diamond Creek. DESCRIPTION:Join the Railway Technical Society of Australasia and Rudolph Kotze to discuss KiwiRail’s approach to developing a national Structural health-index based asset management system . This presentation is being held as a joint RTSA New Zealand meeting in Wellington and will also be broadcast live as a CORE Connect Webinar \nKiwiRail\, as the manager and operator of New Zealand’s national rail network\, is dependent on reliable assets to support the goal of delivering profitable and cost-effective freight and passenger services. In order to achieve these and other safety-related organisational goals\, asset\, and risk management planning as well as accurate prioritisation of capital investment\, it is necessary to ensure that the assets remain fit for purpose and operate within acceptable engineering safety limits. There must be an evidence-based\, scientific way of managing the assets despite the shortfalls with the funding and other setbacks. \nThe KiwiRail Structures Team has developed a system-based method of assessing individual structures\, unique in New Zealand\, to provide a health-index based on a number of key risk criteria. It provides valuable information\, not only for KiwiRail asset managers (regional and head office) to prioritise assets for regular maintenance\, but also for stakeholders including contractors to obtain key information on each asset requiring intervention. In addition to the framework\, through the application of field-mobility\, condition data is now captured digitally and uploaded remotely to a central asset management system. Currently around 400 of the 1700 bridges on the KiwiRail network have been assessed and it is intended to be progressively extended to also cover tunnels and other structures. \nSpeaker: Rudolph Kotze\, Professional Head Structures\, KiwiRail \nRudolph Kotze is responsible for technical standards and strategy for KiwiRail’s structures. SUMMARY:EA Event (Webinar) - Costa Rica's San Jose Metro Build and Tunnelling Project
DESCRIPTION:Mobility is an important issue for all cities\, big or small\, since traffic and congestion are common urban problems everywhere. San José\, the capital city of Costa Rica\, is not an exception. \nDifferent efforts have been made so far to address the growing mobility problem of the city\, where people can spend more than 90 minutes to go through its 8.5 km length during rush hours. Most of these efforts are not enough and the city continues to be a hard-to-travel place. Thus\, alternative solutions as light train\, Tram\, monorail\, RTB or a Metro have been proposed to improve mobility in the future. \nThis presentation focuses on one of these proposed projects: an underground metro system. Considered as one of the most financial resources demanding solutions it is\, at the same time\, the most effective. The proposed solution comprises four lanes\, developed in progressive stages for a total cost of US$4.7 billion for 48.4 km total length and approximately 17 years of continuous construction. The project is only at the preliminary stage and it is not an approved project\, but a proposal from a group of the civil society to improve the quality of life of Costa Rican inhabitants. Private funding is seen as the only realistic means to develop such a project under a concession scheme. \nSpeaker: Marco Tapio\, Civil Engineer\, University of Costa Rica \nMarco Tapia is a Civil Engineer from the University of Costa Rica\, where he also obtained\, with honours\, a Master of Science Degree in Geotechnics. In addition\, he obtained a Master’s degree in Tunnels and Tunnel Boring Machines at the Polytechnic of Turin\, Italy. \nMarco is a professor of the Master’s in Civil Engineering at the University of Costa Rica where he teaches the Underground Engineering course\, as well as at the Costa Rican Institute of Technology where he teaches the Applied Geology course for the Construction Engineering degree.
