SUMMARY:RTSA NZ Chapter Event (Webinar)- Planning and engineering for the Christmas Block of Line
DESCRIPTION:Planning and engineering for the Christmas Block of Line \nKiwiRail frequently make use of reduced freight tonnage and passenger counts to complete major works following Christmas\, they call this their Christmas Block of Line. This will typically entail 10 days with significantly reduced train movements\, sometimes with no train movements depending on duration and time. \nThe 2019/2020 Christmas Block of Line was a major one for Wellington with large amounts of work being completed by Wellington Metro Upgrade Programme (WMUP) as well as the Wellington Metro team within Network Services. This presentation will focus on a few of the large jobs completed under WMUP during the block of line with a key focus in the planning and engineering required in the lead up to a major shutdown as well as some of the risks and opportunities\, site specific challenges and design requirements. \nThe presentation will focus on the installation of the Trentham Underpass\, Piling works in Wellington Station and Rewiring the Overhead on the Hutt Valley Line. Scott Leersnyder will talk about the Trentham Underpass\, Clement Gherardi will talk about the Piling in Wellington Station and Zackary Hastie will talk about Rewiring the Overhead on the Hutt Valley Line. \nPresenters: \nScott Leersnyder is a Project Engineer at Downer with a BE (Hons) who was heavily involved in the planning and delivery of the underpass at Trentham. He has previously worked in the UK as a temporary works designer; and prior to that\, he has been involved in the delivery of various pre-cast bridges around New Zealand. \nClement Gherardi is a Project Manager for John Holland in the Fulton Hogan John Holland Joint Venture\, who are delivering the re-electrification project in Wellington. He has a BE (Hons) in Civil Engineering and has rail experience as a Project Engineer on the Glenfield Junction Alliance (Sydney\, Australia)\, as a Project Manager for the Kaimai Tunnel Upgrade Project and SPEL Stormceptor works\, Toll Onehunga Rail Siding. \nZackary Hastie is a Senior Project Engineer for John Holland in the Fulton Hogan John Holland Joint Venture. SUMMARY:RTSA NZ Chapter Event - Better Management of Level Crossing Safety using LCSIA Process
DESCRIPTION:Using The LCSIA Process To Improve Our Understanding And Better Manage Level Crossing Safety \nThe New Zealand Government has adopted Visions Zero (crashes). While relatively rare\, crashes between trains and motor-vehicles\, pedestrians and cyclists are often severe\, with a high probability of death. To achieve Vision Zero the current risk of crashes at level crossings needs to lowered and the risk of any changes to level crossing usage carefully controlled. This is challenging given the increase in trains\, especially on some metro-lines\, and the use of railway corridors for cycle and pedestrian tracks with associated increased railway crossing demand.\nThis presentation will discuss the Level Crossing Safety Impact Assessment (LCSIA) Process that has been developed by KiwiRail to enable a more detailed understanding on the risk of crashes at existing and modified level crossings. This process utilises the ALCAM risk model and other sources of data\, such as incident data and locomotive engineers’ views on risk. It provides a consistent framework for assessing risk and making decisions to address this risk. A paper on the LCSIA process recently won a best paper award at the 2020 Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting and Conference in Washington DC (USA). \nThe Presenters: \nEddie Cook is KiwiRail’s Senior Level Crossings Engineer. Eddie has 25 years of traffic engineering and transportation experience and has bought this knowledge to the task of creating safer level crossings. \nDr Shane Turner\, from Abley\, is a safe system specialised with over 30 years’ experience. His experience includes developing crash risk rating tools to better understand the underlying risk of road crashes. Shane regularly attends the TRB Annual meeting in Washington DC and is a member or participant in several of the road safety and vulnerable road user research standing committees. Shane has been working with KiwiRail for the last four years on the development of what is now the LCSIA process. DESCRIPTION:China has embarked on an impressive programme of railway development in recent decades\, including building 25000 km of high speed rail lines in the past 10 years to create the world’s largest high speed network. While early Chinese high speed lines utilised technology transfer programmes with overseas suppliers\, increasingly Chinese designed systems and equipment are being developed and implemented. \nRTSA New Zealand is delighted to host a joint delegation from the China Academy of Engineering (CAE) and the China Academy of Railway Sciences (CARS) on 2nd December. Professor He Huawu\, Vice President of CAE and formerly Chief Engineer of the China Railway Corporation will make a presentation on recent Chinese Railway Technology Developments. \nProfessor He Huawu is one of the chief designers of Chinese high speed technologies and has dedicated his career to the roll-out of high speed railway technologies. He has been engaged in railway transportation\, engineering as well as R&D and the application of high speed technologies for many years. He led over one hundred projects to design\, build\, test and integrate new trunk railway lines and terminals and achieved significant accomplishments in critical technologies for high speed railway regularity and stability. Although usually very successful once in operation\, light rail projects have gained a reputation for cost and programme overruns as well as intense media scrutiny. \nSpeaker:\nEmma Parry\, from Frequency Ltd in Wellington\, will talk about her thoughts on how light rail projects can be built more cost effectively and quicker\, drawing on her experience from working on a number of light rail projects in the UK .   Emma is a civil engineer who has spent most of her career working in the UK Light Rail/ Rail Industry. She has recently moved to New Zealand and is continuing her career as a Project Manager working on a range of complex infrastructure projects nationwide. Since moving to New Zealand she has been passionate about sharing her experiences within Light-Rail\, aiming to help others find efficiencies in the complex development process\, and recently won the Young Rail Professional Pitching Competition at the 2019 NZ Rail Conference earlier this year with her presentation on “Building a Cost-Effective Light- Rail System”. DESCRIPTION:The RTSA New Zealand and the Engineering New Zealand Auckland Branch invite you to a presentation from Professor Andrew McNaughton\, Strategic Advisor to the UK High Speed 2 Rail project in Auckland on Monday\, 19 August which will also be available for members elsewhere to view live online. \nAndrew McNaughton is a leading authority on high speed rail and chairs the World High Speed Rail Committee. He was the Chief Engineer for the UK High Speed 2 project from 2009 -17 and led the specification\, operational design\, technical strategy and route development for the project. He is currently leading the New South Wales government Fastrail strategy\, as part of its regional development and regeneration agenda\, and is Special Advisor to the Czech Republic Government on similar issues. Andrew is a Professorial Fellow at the University of Southampton and a visiting professor at Imperial College\, London\, and Nottingham University. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor McNaughton was a standout Keynote speaker at the 2010 RTSA Conference on Railway Excellence in Wellington and we are delighted that is able to speak to us during a very short visit to Auckland. \nAndrew’s presentation is very relevant to New Zealand given the current government interest in developing regional rail services to connect our major cities to regional centres. DESCRIPTION:Cleaning the Otira Tunnel \nThe RTSA NZ invite you to an encore of the above presentation in Wellington on Wednesday 31 July\, which will also be available to view as a live webinar. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNeil Mason\, Managing Director of Vitruvius Ltd\, has kindly agreed to make an encore performance of his fascinating presentation on cleaning the Otira Rail Tunnel\, originally given to the RTSA in April\, so that a wider New Zealand and international audience can participate. \nSituated on the Midland Line between Otira and Arthurs Pass in the South Island\, KiwiRail’s Otira rail Tunnel measures an impressive 8.566 km in length and runs through a harsh but fragile alpine environment. At the time of its opening in 1923 it was the longest tunnel in the southern hemisphere. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor the past 30 years the tunnel has conveyed trains carrying uncovered coal wagons up the steep 1 in 33 gradient from Otira\, combined with the ventilation system has deposited sand and coal dust on the floor and walls creating a “mountain range” balanced along the top of power and communication cables. A creative method had to be developed\, using innovative technology\, to remove the deposits by water jets and then remove the particulates from the water to comply with stringent environmental consent conditions\, before discharge into the nearby river. \nNeil has led many interesting and challenging rail projects through his 27 years in the rail industry in NZ and the UK. DESCRIPTION:Operating the World’s longest & heaviest train  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn behalf of RTSA NZ we’d like to invite you to the above presentation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn Australia’s Pilbara region trains convey processed iron ore from the mines to the ports. These trains are among some of the largest in the world. In a normal day\, these trains will move between 1 and 3 million tonnes of Iron Ore over a nominal haul distance of between 300 – 400 kms.  Due to the regional conditions and market variability of the commodity business\, these railroads have had to constantly optimise and stretch their operating technology to maximise their return on investment. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis presentation provides an overview of the operational considerations that were assessed prior to the operation of the world-record train. This train challenged the operating paradigms at BHPIO and presented a number of unique and complex problems to solve. It also provided valuable data for the business as it endeavoured to grow its operating footprint in a low capital investment environment.  This presentation will review the operation and its operating infrastructure and technology platforms whilst specifically reviewing the operation of the world-record train. \nTrent Ludlow is KiwiRail’s Regional Lead – Upper South Island.
