He graduated from Monash University in 1974 and has worked in many areas of the Railways. The area with the longest experience is the 1\,500 Volt dc Traction Power System\, mainly with the Substations. He has worked in Systems\, Asset Management\, Design\, Installation\, Maintenance\, Testing and Project Management. \nHe has spanned the many re-organizations from the Victorian Railways to VicRail\, MetRail\, PTC\, Bayside Trains\, M>Train\, and now with Metro Trains Melbourne\, in the fourth Suburban Rail Franchize. \nCurrently\, Ian is working as a Power Modelling Specialist in the Network Planning and Modelling Team of the Network Integration Division at Metro Trains Melbourne. The focus of the simulation modelling is on the analysis and performance of the 1\,500 Volt dc Traction Power System. This includes strategy plans to improve its performance\, and the requirements for dealing with the rapid changes as a result of the many recent changes to the railway services. Examples are the introduction of the new High Capacity Metro Train\, the 75 Level Crossing Removals\, the Metro Tunnel Project\, the Hurstbridge Line Upgrade Projects\, the Mernda Rail Extension\, the upgrades of the services on most Lines\, the proposed extensions of electrification and the application of energy storage and reduced energy consumption. \nA focus in the past 10 years is on the application of new technologies to reduce energy consumption for which energy storage is a big component. The technology and commercial viability of it has evolved rapidly during this time. Metro Trains has an Energy Storage Unit installed at Diamond Creek. It\, unfortunately\, is not yet in service due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. \nIan has a bit of a passion for new technology and reduction in energy consumption (for a more sustainable world)\, and a better and more reliable service for our passengers\, so the opportunity to talk about it is appreciated. \n \nStephen Poh MIEAust \nProduct Marketing Manager – AC & DC Traction Power Supply | ABB Australia \nStephen Poh is the Product Marketing Manager specifically for AC and DC Traction Power Supply at ABB Australia.\nHis scope of responsibility covers ABB’s railway portfolio including air-insulated and gas-insulated single-phase or two-phase AC switchgear as well as metal-enclosed DC switchgear\, and the complete portfolio of DC traction power solutions.\nWith close to 20 years’ engineering experience\, Stephen has held numerous local and global management roles with ABB within the medium voltage and low voltage product portfolios across multiple segments including transport\, mining and oil & gas.\nHe holds a Bachelor of Science (Electrical/Electronics Engineering) and Master of Business Administration from the Robert Gordon University\, Scotland. \n \nDr Ali Parvizi MIEAust CPEng NER RPEQ\nNational Marketing & SalesTraction | ABB Australia \nDr Ali Parvizi is the Marketing and Sales Manager for Rail Traction at ABB Australia\, covering the Australian and New Zealand markets.\nHis scope of responsibility covers the entire ABB traction product portfolio\, including traction converters\, energy storage systems and digitalization for rolling stock and electric buses.\nPrior to joining ABB\, Ali held senior management positions within rolling stock manufacturers throughout Europe and the Middle East\, including MAPNA Locomotive\, Siemens and Vossloh.\nAli has published more than 40 technical papers in ISI journals and technical conferences concerning manufacturing and railway rolling stock technologies.\nHe holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Tehran. \n  \nMC \n \nAmy Lezala FIEAust CPEng\nLXRG Engineering Manager | Office of the Chief Engineer \nAmy has been in rail since 2007\, working across rolling stock maintenance\, rolling stock manufacturing\, infrastructure design assurance and network asset management. \nAmy has worked in safety and assurance for the majority of her career\, from her early days as a rolling stock fire safety engineer to her current role as Level Crossing Engineering Manager at Metro Trains Melbourne. \nShe takes a whole of life\, whole of system view when approaching a project.
