SUMMARY:RTSA Special Event (jointly with IMechE): Felix Schmid - "The Long History and Exciting Future of Railway Systems Thinking"
DESCRIPTION:This special event is co-hosted with Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) \nFelix Schmid\, Chair of the Railway Division of the IMechE for 2020-2021\, has chosen ‘The Long History and Exciting Future of Railway Systems Thinking’ as the theme for his Chair’s Address. \nHe will briefly discuss the concept of the railway as a system of systems and he will reflect on some of the good (and not so good) examples of systems thinking during the early development of the railway as a means of transport for goods and people. He will review some of the major technical breakthroughs that enable today’s high performance railways and he will reflect on some recent developments\, where he had an involvement. Felix will argue that not all technological progress is entirely fit for purpose. He will also include some thoughts on his career as an engineer and innovative educator \nSpeaker: Felix Schmid\nProgramme Director – MSc Railway Systems Engineering and Integration\, University of Birmingham\n\n\n\nBorn in Zürich\, Switzerland\, Felix Schmid graduated from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology with a degree in electrical and electronic engineering. Following a brief career in software analysis in his home country\, he moved to Manchester\, England\, to work for GEC Traction as a locomotive control systems engineer. \nIn 1982 he became a research engineer at UMIST and later a research assistant at the University of Salford. He then joined Brunel University as a lecturer in computer integrated manufacturing. In 1993\, he took up a post as a railway inspector with the Swiss Federal Office of Transport but realised quickly that he was not suited to a civil service role. After a year\, he returned to Britain and a senior lectureship at the University of Sheffield\, where he was employed to develop the MSc programme in Railway Systems Engineering. In 2005\, Felix and the programme transferred to the University of Birmingham and the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education. Between 2005 and 2019\, he managed three railway related masters programmes and he still supervises research in the areas of railway control\, railway operations and systems engineering. \nFelix became a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 2003. He is on the Board and the Executive of the Railway Division and has led four Railway Technical Tours between 2016 and 2019. He is currently involved in the planning of the Railway Technical Tour 2020. Felix Schmid has provided contributions to many IMechE railway conferences and seminars\, including ten Young Members’ seminars. He is also a fellow of the Institution of Railway Signalling Engineers and of the Permanent Way Institution. \n  \n\nClick on the link below to register:

SUMMARY:QLD Chapter Event: Prediction and Mitigation of Wheel Squeal
DESCRIPTION:Join the Railway Technical Society of Australasia (RTSA)\, Qld Chapter\, for a presentation (offered both in person in Brisbane and online as a webinar) on the prediction and mitigation of the noise phenomenon known as wheel squeal. Professor Paul Meehan will outline some of the recent research being undertaken in this area by the Rail Mechanics Group at The University of Queensland\, Australia. In particular\, recent results for the mechanisms\, prediction\, measurement and control of wheel squeal will be presented. \nAn overview of major results in prediction of the occurrence\, growth and amplitude of wheel squeal under mechanisms such as falling friction and mode coupling will be provided first. This insight will be used to quantify the effectiveness of methods to mitigate its occurrence\, such as water and oil-based friction modifiers and vibration dampers. Verifications with experimental and field observations will be discussed to provide important understanding and control of wheel squeal based on underlying mechanics modelling. \nSpeaker\nProf. Paul A. Meehan\nProfessor\, School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering Faculty of Engineering\, Architecture and Information Technology\, University of Queensland \n \nPaul is an expert in railway nonlinear mechanics and leads The University of Queensland research in rail mechanics and advanced forming as part of the Centre for Advanced Materials Performance and Manufacturing (AMPAM). He recently finished his service as a research program leader of the CRC for Rail Manufacturing and served as the Chair of the Engineers Australia\, National Committee on Applied Mechanics. He has initiated and led many successful large collaborative R&D projects totalling more than $15 million in competitive research funding including ARC Linkage\, Queensland Government and CRC grants. His research has a focus on fundamental prediction and control of dynamic phenomena in contact mechanics and wear with applications in railways\, automotive and advanced manufacturing. He regularly contributes his expertise to consulting projects such as locomotive dynamics standards testing and served as a lead vibrations expert of the most devastating disaster in Australian history (Black Saturday Bushfires\, 2009). Despite his heavy industry collaborative research\, he has authored over 140 internationally refereed publications and 3 international patents. \nClick here to register on the EA website.

SUMMARY:QLD Chapter Event - Promoting Competition in the Interstate Rail Freight Market
DESCRIPTION:Join RTSA Qld Chapter in Brisbane for a presentation from Dean Gannaway\, Regulatory Economist\, discussing the role of competition in addressing the decline in rail’s modal share. \nCompetition policy reforms in the 1990s established third-party access regimes for the rail sector with the view to promoting entry and competition in the downstream rail haulage market. This was accompanied by corporatisation\, privatisation and in some instances\, structural separation. Outside of the heavy haul coal rail networks this model has had limited success in achieving the policy objectives with the Australian Interstate Rail Freight Market remaining highly concentrated with two rail operators under monopolistic competition. \nDean will look at the relevant factors which contribute to creating barriers to entry into the interstate rail freight haulage market and the role of competition in this market in addressing the ongoing decline in rail’s modal share. \nPresenter: Dean Gannaway | Experienced Regulatory Economist \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nClick here to register!

SUMMARY:NZ Chapter Event: Mainline Track Upgrades: Auckland-Wellington and Sydney-Melbourne
DESCRIPTION:Join the Railway Technical Society of Australasia New Zealand Chapter online with Dr Philip Laird to discuss ‘Mainline Track Upgrades: Auckland – Wellington and Sydney – Melbourne’ at 12:30-1:30pm NZT on the 17th November 2021. \nRegister here. \nAuckland and Wellington are linked by the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) narrow gauge railway of length 681km. Sydney and Melbourne are now linked by a standard gauge railway of length 960 km. Both railways include challenging terrain. \nAn outline is given of former improvements for each of the NIMT railway and the Melbourne to Sydney railway that include deviations for grade easing. Many of the NIMT deviations have led to a reduction in distance. By way of contrast\, each NSW main south line deviation has resulted in extra distance. Further contrasts include electrification of most of the NIMT during the 1980s\, and\, the NIMT gaining Centralised traffic control signalling for most of its length some 42 years ahead of the Melbourne to Sydney railway. \nSome planned and possible upgrades are outlined for the NIMT. The paper concludes that in order for the Sydney Melbourne railway to win more freight and passenger traffic\, some track straightening is essential. \nSpeaker\nDr Philip Laird\nHonorary Associate Professor\, the University of Wollongong \nDr Philip Laird is a graduate of Victoria University of Wellington\, the Australian National University in Canberra and the University of Calgary in Canada. He is currently an Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Wollongong and his land transport research appears in journals and refereed conference papers. \nHis recent work includes the potential benefits of the development of Medium Speed Rail to connect for NSW regional centres to Sydney and an Inland Railway linking Melbourne and Brisbane though Parkes being constructed to modern engineering standards. \nOn Australia Day 2021 Philip was awarded an OAM “For service to the rail freight and passenger transport industry.” \nClick here register on the Engineering New Zealand website.

SUMMARY:EA Webinar Event - "Cybersecurity in the railway industry"
DESCRIPTION:Cybersecurity is a hot topic worldwide with attacks being performed against multiple domains. Over the past 5 years there has been a major increase in attacks on the railway system with a number denial of service and ransomware attacks being announced. \nThe railway industry is clearly a target for cyber criminals\, and it is clearly hard to defend due to the inherent geographical distribution and technologically speaking the railway systems are designed with safety and availability rather than any focus on security. The railway becomes more of a target now as it starts to move to computer-based systems using IP protocols and wireless communication and networking. \nThere has been a recent release of a CENELEC Standard (EN 50701) to deal with Cyber Security for Railway Applications where this builds on the underlying standards such as ISO 27001 and IEC 62443. \nJoin subject matter experts as they provide an overview of why cybersecurity is important in the railway industry\, highlighting attacks which have been executed on railways and asking the question as to whether your systems are protected\, with your railway network and assets being monitored for attacks. \n  \nThis is a free Engineers Australia event.  Click on the link below to register

SUMMARY:Qld Event: Advances in Railway Traction Technology
DESCRIPTION:During this session we will provide two technical presentations on recent advances in technology in the railway traction system in Queensland’s passenger network. It’s a catered event and we’d like to encourage attendance in person to take advantage of the networking opportunity. \n \nPOWER TRANSFORMERS \nCaboolture feeder station is planned to be renewed by 2024 and QR’s HV Systems Engineering department is investigating a new supply arrangement that will utilise a special type of power transformer\, whose design is complicated by the booster and autotransformer systems both being supplied by this feeder station. This presentation covers the design\, modelling and transformer market solicitations undertaken by the team. \nCENTRAL STATION – CONVERSION OF OLE TO ROCB \nQR has recently completed the introduction of Conductor Rail technology in the heart of its sub-urban passenger network. The vision of the project was to introduce an Overhead Traction Contact System technology that not only delivers predicted improvements in performance\, resilience and the risk profile\, but also complements the architectural enhancement of the station. \nThe presentation covers the approach to introducing a new basic design\, and the challenges brought by implementing it in a busy brownfield setting. \nEvent program (In-person event) \n5:00 PM AEST — Arrival & registration\n5:30 PM AEST — Webinar commencement\n6:30 PM AEST — Networking drinks & canapes\n7:30 PM AEST — Conclusion \nWebinar \n5:30 PM AEST — Webinar commencement\n6:30 PM AEST — Webinar conclusion \nWho should attend this event\nAnyone interested in railway technologies\, power systems/HV systems engineers\, OHLE engineers\, mechanical engineers\, asset managers\, suppliers and consultants. \nSpeakers \nAlan Buttery\, Principal Engineer Power Systems\nAlan Buttery (B.
