SUMMARY:SA Event: Implementing Batteries in Heavy Haul Rail in Australia webinar
DESCRIPTION:Join the RTSA South Australia Chapter for a webinar on implementing batteries in Heavy Haul Rail in Australia at 5:45pm (for a 6:00pm start) on Thursday 5th May 2022. \nThis event is free for RTSA members\, and AUD $30 for non-members. \nClick here to register on the Engineers Australia website. \nAbout the Project\nAurizon is focusing on Battery and Green Hydrogen technology as the most likely technologies to deliver decarbonised rail freight. We have partnered with the University of Queensland (multi-year engagement) to understand the challenges of bringing these technologies to our industry. We have the objective to position Aurizon to lead the Australian freight sector in achieving net-zero\noperational emissions by 2050. \nOur commitments are: \n\nWe are committed to achieving net-zero operational greenhouse gas emissions by 2050\nWe will take a leading role in accelerating decarbonisation of Australia’s freight sector\nWe will contribute to decarbonising the supply chains in which we participate\n\nAchieving our operational decarbonisation goals will be driven by: \n\nEstablishing the $50m Future Fleet Fund (to be dispensed over 10 years)\nImplementing our Tracking Towards Net-Zero Operational Emissions initiatives\nEstablishing partnerships and forums for customer and industry collaboration\nContinuing advocacy for the significant role that rail contributes in the transition to a low-carbon economy.\n\nAbout the Speaker\n \nEur Ing Roger Buckley GAICD MA(Cantab) CEng FIMechE FIEAust EngExec CPEng RPEQ NER APEC Engineer IntPE(Aus) \nRoger has over 30 years experience in design\, integration and project delivery in Defence\, Toll systems and Rail. After 9 years as Aurizon’s Chief Engineer Roger now leads Aurizon’s Fleet\nDecarbonisation Programme. The Programme includes the development and testing of prototypes\, technical research to enable and support the programme and short-term emission reduction\ninitiatives targeted to have immediate impact on our operational emission intensity. Roger has throughout his career been part of or lead teams of highly skilled\, multi-disciplinary specialists to\nachieve project-oriented goals utilising new technologies. As a Fellow of Engineers Australia and The Institution of Mechanical Engineers he actively encourages other engineers and students to set and achieve their career and personal aspirations. \nClick here to register on the Engineers Australia website.

SUMMARY:EA Webinar Event - "Hydrogen trains: is hydrogen the answer for replacing diesel?"
DESCRIPTION:The presentation will cover the need for an alternative fuel to replace diesel in trains\, the case for hydrogen\, the difficulties in using hydrogen\, current prototypes and trials of trains using hydrogen and the presenter’s prognosis for the future of hydrogen in trains. \nSpeaker: Frank Szanto\, Design Authority – PMS Engineering\, Rail & Transit Systems Downer \nFrank is a Mechanical Engineer\, and has worked in rolling stock design\, manufacturing and maintenance for 35 years\, doing a little advocacy for the Australian industry on the side. He has a particular interest in modelling train performance to optimise energy efficiency.

SUMMARY:EA Webinar Event - "Cybersecurity in the railway industry"
DESCRIPTION:Cybersecurity is a hot topic worldwide with attacks being performed against multiple domains. Over the past 5 years there has been a major increase in attacks on the railway system with a number denial of service and ransomware attacks being announced. \nThe railway industry is clearly a target for cyber criminals\, and it is clearly hard to defend due to the inherent geographical distribution and technologically speaking the railway systems are designed with safety and availability rather than any focus on security. The railway becomes more of a target now as it starts to move to computer-based systems using IP protocols and wireless communication and networking. \nThere has been a recent release of a CENELEC Standard (EN 50701) to deal with Cyber Security for Railway Applications where this builds on the underlying standards such as ISO 27001 and IEC 62443. \nJoin subject matter experts as they provide an overview of why cybersecurity is important in the railway industry\, highlighting attacks which have been executed on railways and asking the question as to whether your systems are protected\, with your railway network and assets being monitored for attacks. \n  \nThis is a free Engineers Australia event.  Click on the link below to register
