SUMMARY:SA/NT Event: PWI South Australia Event Non-destructive testing of rails
DESCRIPTION:Join the PWI SA branch for their October meeting\, an in-person event on the non-destructive testing of rails in Adelaide on Thursday 5th October! \nIf attending\, please RSVP to Robert Schweiger by Tuesday 3rd October 2023 by phone on 0413 128 775 or by email at rschweiger1@outlook.com \nAbout the event\nRail inspection is an essential task to ensure the safety and performance of railway track. Not all rail defects may be observed by external observation. Some of the most critical rail defects can initiate and grow to a point of failure entirely within the rail. Essential tools for the detection of these internal defects include ultrasonics\, magnetic particle and dye penetrant testing. These tools are grouped together under the general title of Non-Destructive Testing. \nThe two presenters at this meeting will talk about the nondestructive testing of rails\, describing the various tools available and their latest technological developments. \nThe presentation will compose 3 sections\, approximately 15 minutes each as listed below. \n\nManufacturing Phased Array (PAUT) / Eddy Current automation:\n\nRail track inspection systems – automation\nRail Wheel inspection automation\, robotics\nRail Truck– overseas manufacturing and compliance testing requirements\n\n\nIn-Service Ultrasonic / PAUT:\n\nBogie Axle Testing PAUT\nRail Wheel – PAUT\, EC\, Residual Stress\nTrack testing Welds – UT\, PAUT\nTrack testing – Rail head failures – PAUT\n\n\nForum:\n\nNon-destructive testing challenges and technology applications industry discussion.\n\n\n\nPresenters\n \nLeonel Borges\, Quality and Completions\, John Holland \nLeo has been Inspecting Rail weld since he was 24years old mostly working in Major projects in WA such as FMG T45\, T155 and Eliwana\, BHP & RIO Tinto Major shutdowns and Roy Hill Project. SUMMARY:RTSA SA Chapter Event: Preparing for the Floods: An ARTC Experience
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThe Trans-Australian railway line was built over 100 years ago and while it has been upgraded in part it was not built to modern design\, which is now being felt on a number of fronts. \nThe increasing frequency of extreme weather events disrupting rail services\, as experienced across our network over the last 4 years\, demonstrates the threat that extreme weather events pose to ARTC’s assets as well as the potential economic and social consequences of outages in the supply chain. \nExtreme weather events have and will increasingly cause track closures as the resistance\, reliability and speed of recovery are tested. ARTC are facing increasing costs due to these extreme weather and has embarked on a journey to improve network resilience. This discussion will highlight some key elements of our journey so far\, including an overview of the flood modelling undertaken to better understand our flood risks. \n\nAttendance is free for RTSA\, TAs\, PWI and EA members – Register Here!\nAttendance is AUD$30 for non-members (you can join find out more about joining the RTSA here.\n\nEvent Program\n\n5.45 pm: Registration opens\n6.00 pm: Presentation commences with Q&A\n7.00 pm: Networking\n7.30 pm: Event concludes\n\nAbout the Presenter\nIan joined ARTC as the Interstate Asset Strategy Manager in 2021 after a long stint as an asset management consultant with AMCL and GHD. During his time as a consultant Ian has worked with asset rich clients across a broad range of industry sectors including electrical\, gas\, roads\, facilities and rail across Australia\, New Zealand and even a short stint in Boston. \nAs the Interstate Asset Strategy manager\, Ian manages a team of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in the disciplines of Rail\, Signals\, Structures and Track where amongst many roles monitor the performance of the assets and develop appropriate asset management strategies. The task developing an Interstate Asset Resilience Strategy was taken up by the Asset Strategy team\, and it would be fair to say it’s been quite journey so far for ARTC\, but still has a long way to go. \nSpeakers\n \nIan Pibworth\n(Interstate Asset Strategy Manager\, Adelaide\, ARTC)

SUMMARY:History of the Mile End Stabling yards
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nStep back in time with Bob Sampson\, former South Australian Railways shunter and signalman\, as he shares a deeply personal and historically rich look at the Mile End Goods Yard—once one of Adelaide’s busiest and most vital rail hubs. \nHaving lived\, worked\, and documented the area extensively since 1969\, Bob will present a rare and compelling collection of photographs capturing the daily workings and changes within the yard. A highlight of the event is a 12-minute colour Super 8mm film he produced in 1974/75\, showcasing authentic shunting activities from that era. Though the film may carry the charm of its time\, it remains a valuable historical record. \nBob will also guide attendees through a detailed PowerPoint presentation that maps out the various parts of the yard and explains their specific functions\, offering a comprehensive view of the inner workings of Mile End during its peak. \nWhether you’re a railway enthusiast\, a historian\, or simply curious about local heritage\, this is a unique opportunity to experience the story of Mile End through the eyes of someone who helped shape it. \n🌏 Bobbi’s Bar and Restaurant\, Hilton Hotel\, 264 South Road Hilton SA 5033  6:00-9:00pm ACST \n📅 Thursday 12th June 2025 \n 🎫 Register for the event below \n💰 This event is free for RTSA and Engineers Australia members\, and $30AUD for non-members. \nAbout the speaker\n\n\n \nBob Sampson OAM \nBob joined the SA Railways in January 1972 as a Porter and Ticket Collector on the Redhen trains. \nHe completed his Rules training and transferred to the Mile End Freight Yard in May 1973 as a pilot\, assistant shunter and yard porter. SUMMARY:Conference on Railway Excellence (CORE) 2025
DESCRIPTION:Kia Ora!\nWe warmly invite you to join us in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland)\, Aotearoa (New Zealand)\, for the Conference on Railway Excellence 2025 (CORE 2025)\, themed Kaitiaki – Guarding the Future\, from 12-14 August at the Pullman Hotel\, Auckland. CORE is Australasia’s premier railway engineering and technology conference\, featuring over 80 peer-reviewed papers and international keynote speakers addressing critical issues in railway policy\, operations\, and engineering. Expect insightful presentations\, dynamic discussions\, networking opportunities\, technical tours—and\, of course\, a bit of socialising. CORE 2025 will deliver the high standard of content you’ve come to expect\, with a distinct New Zealand touch. Our theme\, Kaitiaki\, embodies the concept of guardianship over the sky\, sea\, and land—just as we\, as railway professionals\, are the guardians of rail’s role in sustainable freight and passenger transport. We’re also introducing a new option for presentations: a pathway for those unable to submit a full paper but still keen to share valuable insights. These extended abstracts\, typically 2-4 pages\, will be peer-reviewed to maintain the high standard of CORE while offering more flexibility. Auckland\, known as the “City of Sails\,” is at the heart of New Zealand’s rail investment\, including the City Rail Loop\, which will be nearing completion during the conference. This project will be a highlight of our technical tours. With convenient flight options from major Australian cities and the added opportunity to explore New Zealand’s natural beauty\, CORE 2025 offers a perfect blend of professional development and adventure. For those concerned about overseas travel\, keep in mind that the flight time is shorter than an east coast-to-Perth trip\, we speak the same language\, and we’re still part of the family—well\, almost! The RTSA New Zealand Chapter\, the CORE 2025 organising committee\, and the New Zealand rail industry look forward to welcoming you to Auckland for another exceptional CORE. \nJohn Gardiner Chair\, CORE 2025 \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
