SUMMARY:EA Webinar Event - Genoa-Milan high-capacity railway line – Italy’s largest engineering projecty
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nInvolving the excavation of 15 million cubic metres of material\, the Genoa-Milan High-Speed\, High-Capacity Railway Line\, also known as Terzo Valico dei Giovi (Terzo Valico) is one of Italy’s largest engineering projects\, consisting of a 37km tunnel through steep mountainous terrain. The project has created thousands of jobs for local economies while putting sustainability at its core. \nLed by the Webuild Group\, this large infrastructure will reduce travel time and carbon emissions – allowing trains to travel at a maximum speed of 250 km/h\, crossing the Genoa and Alessandria provinces\, and 12 municipalities\, with Milan as the final destination. \nJoin us as experts from the project discuss the challenges faced and innovations that took place during the design and construction of the tunnel and how this will change the approach for future projects addressing the sustainable benefits. \nWho should attend\nThis webinar is relevant for civil engineers\, tunnelling engineers\, rail and road engineers\, transportation engineering and design consultants\, as well as those working in the construction industry. \nYou do not need to be a RTSA Member or  Engineers Australia member to attend.  Click on the link below to register \n  \nSpeakers: \nLeonardo Di Gati\,Responsible for the Design of Underground Works\, Terzo Valico dei Giovi – Genova Junction – One Project\, Webuild\nLeonardo Di Gati has earned a master’s degree in civil engineering from University of Illinois in 2000\, and\, since then\, he has been actively working in tunnelling and geotechnical projects in Italy\, Europe and USA. Starting as field engineer and ending up as Project Manager\, during the years he has developed a deep knowledge of all the problems connected with the design and construction of Underground Projects\, dealing also with different specific activities\, like tendering\, feasibility studies\, preliminary and final design\, monitoring and construction. He has been involved in the design and construction of several tunnels\, including the High Speed/Capacity railway line Bologna to Florence\, TBM tunnelling projects in Turkey\, the Autostrada Pedemontana Lombarda highway system\, and the SA-RC highway. His key experience applies to conventional tunnelling in different geotechnical situations\, from weak soil\, to mixed soil\, to hard rock\, with both conventional and TBM method. Since 2014 he has been working in Terzo Valico jobsites\, and currently he is responsible for the Design of Underground Works\, for Webuild\, in the Terzo Valico dei Giovi – Genova Junction – One Project. \nRemo Grandori\, Responsible for TBM\, Plant & Equipment\, Webuild\nSince 1984 Remo has been working in the field of mechanized tunneling\, starting as a TBM site engineer\, and ending up as Technical Director\, for some of the most important tunnel projects executed worldwide. During its career has been involved in the execution of over 130 TBM tunnel projects\, for about 1100 km of tunnels bored in the most different geologies and conditions. Furthermore\, since 1987\, he has participated in the development of several innovations in tunnel and TBMs design acting as Consultant to Clients\, Contractors and TBM manufactures. Its cooperation with Webuild group goes back to the late eighties and continued until today\, having been involved in the study and execution of several major TBM projects in North and South America\, China\, Europe\, Africa and lately in Australia. From 1996 to 2007 Mr. Grandori taught a course at the Sapienza University of Rome as a contract professor on mechanized tunnel excavations. \nCarmine D’Auria\, Health and Safety Manager\, Terzo Valico dei Giovi – Genova Junction – One Project\, Webuild \nSince 1997 Carmine has been working for Webuild in the field of construction of large railway and road infrastructures and has gained considerable experience in the construction of very long and complex tunnels. Graduated in Environmental and Territorial Engineering\, since the beginning of his career he has been involved in the health and safety of workers in difficult environments\, in tunnels built both in traditional and mechanized excavation\, addressing various complex problems such as grisou\, asbestos and emergency management in hard places to reach. Among the projects in which he has worked\, we can mention the Bologna-Florence High Speed Rail Section\, the Salerno-Reggio Calabria Motorway 5th and 6th Macrolotto\, the reconstruction of the Polcevera Viaduct (Genova San Giorgio Bridge) in Genoa and the Milan-Genoa High Speed/Capacity line called Terzo Valico dei Giovi – Genova Junction – One Project. \nQ&A Panelists: \nRichard Graham\, Project Director di Forrestfield Airport Link\, Webuild – NRW JV\nRichard Graham graduated in Civil Engineering from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh\, UK. He has over 40 years’ experience of working in heavy international construction\, primarily in the hydropower\, tunneling and metro sectors. Currently he is the Project Director for the Salini Impregilo – NRW JV undertaking the 2 x 8km long Forrestfield Airport Link in Perth\, Australia. Immediately prior to this he was responsible for the Design & Construction of the 42 km long Orange Metro Line in Riyadh\, Saudi Arabia\, the Red Line North Metro in Doha\, Qatar\, and the 25km long STEP deep sewer tunnel in Abu Dhabi. \nJacob Latter Construction Director- Rail\, Webuild\nJacob is an experienced rail industry expert able to act in Delivery Leadership or precontract capacity\, both Technical and commercial. In addition to this Jacob has significant strategic development experience in both large-scale rail project delivery and business development. He joined Webuild 2021 with over 20 years engineering\, construction & maintenance experience in the Rail industry in Australia. Key areas of expertise include Project delivery across key client portfolios including ARTC\, MTM\, RTIO\, extensive experience in resources\, freight\, urban\, metro and light rail environments\, development of Systems & Engineering Assurance Strategies & Teams for complex infrastructure projects. Jacob has worked across the nation on the broadest ranges of rail industry projects from delivery to review and oversight. He subsequently spent a period of time at train maintenance depots in largely engineering management roles. \nIn September 2000 James moved to Railtrack\, then Network Rail\, working with Infrastructure and Rail Vehicle engineers and operations teams\, giving him the ‘system’ approach to engineering that he has still has today. \nJames established the Network Certification Body (NCB)\, a Network Rail subsidiary business in 2011. As NCB’s Managing Director he led the business in providing independent engineering certification services to both infrastructure and rail vehicle projects. \nSince 2018 James has been the Head of Design in the Southern Region of Network Rail\, leading the large team of multi-discipline design and testing engineers that support rail infrastructure capital delivery projects. \n \nCarolyn Griffiths\nDirector of Irish Rail \nCarolyn’s career in the Rail industry spans from shop floor technician to Board Director. She has worked in heavy rail\, metro and light rail; in engineering operations\, manufacturing and establishing new rail systems both in the UK and overseas (living and working in Singapore\, Sweden and Germany). \nShe is a Board member of Irish Rail and recent Board member of AES Engineering. Her last full time role was Chief Inspector of the Rail Accident Investigation Branch UK; she founded the organisation and lead its operations for 10 years\, reporting to the Secretary of State for Transport. \nShe is a Board member of the Royal Academy of Engineering ; Past President and current member of Council for the IMechE and recent Board member of Engineering Council. DESCRIPTION:Join the Railway Technical Society of Australasia New Zealand Chapter online with Dr Philip Laird to discuss ‘Mainline Track Upgrades: Auckland – Wellington and Sydney – Melbourne’ at 12:30-1:30pm NZT on the 17th November 2021. \nRegister here. \nAuckland and Wellington are linked by the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) narrow gauge railway of length 681km. Sydney and Melbourne are now linked by a standard gauge railway of length 960 km. Both railways include challenging terrain. \nAn outline is given of former improvements for each of the NIMT railway and the Melbourne to Sydney railway that include deviations for grade easing. Many of the NIMT deviations have led to a reduction in distance. By way of contrast\, each NSW main south line deviation has resulted in extra distance. Further contrasts include electrification of most of the NIMT during the 1980s\, and\, the NIMT gaining Centralised traffic control signalling for most of its length some 42 years ahead of the Melbourne to Sydney railway. \nSome planned and possible upgrades are outlined for the NIMT. The paper concludes that in order for the Sydney Melbourne railway to win more freight and passenger traffic\, some track straightening is essential. \nSpeaker\nDr Philip Laird\nHonorary Associate Professor\, the University of Wollongong \nDr Philip Laird is a graduate of Victoria University of Wellington\, the Australian National University in Canberra and the University of Calgary in Canada. Tony\ncurrently manages a team of investigators split between ATSB’s Adelaide and Perth offices. The team consists of rail\, marine\, aviation and specialist human factors. \n  \nPhoenix Virtualisation and Disaster Recovery project – Network Control\nCentres Business objectives and outcomes \n\nTo recover our existing operational systems in the agreed timeframes in the event of a disaster.\nDeliver a virtualised/replicated environment\, that allows recoverability of our Operational Systems\, and for them to be run independently of the location of any of our train control centres\n\nWho is involved? \n\nThe project involves many stakeholders including as key suppliers\, operations\, customers\, various SMEs from ARTC’s Systems and Technology division\n\nSystem virtualisation platform \n\nARTC has chosen Flexpod as the system virtualisation platform. FlexPod is a data center platform that is used to host infrastructure software and business applications in virtualised environments.\n\nSecurity model \n\nCyber security is at the forefront of the platform design. This includes operational environment protection from other zones\, restricting\nan attacker’s ability to move within operational systems if the perimeter has been breached\, and physical security.\n\nDisaster and failover scenarios accommodated by the design \n\nNetwork Control floor is evacuated however\, the Data Centre and systems are operational. DESCRIPTION:Whilst accidents and near misses are occupational hazards of Track Workers\, serious incidents expose issues and vulnerabilities where the safety of the system itself is ultimately breached. Unfortunately\, such breaches are all too common. This presentation focuses on the results of a cross-country study (Australia and UK) on Lookout working—the primary means of protecting a work group when track workers have to carry out their tasks between passing trains. It is one of the most vulnerable methods of work in rail today. The findings of this study\, a meta-analysis of 31 incidents\, revealed that casual and contributing factors in such incidents are not necessary what you may expect… \n The webinar will discuss: \n\nA systematic review and meta-analysis of Lookout-related track worker incidents\nUses data across Australia and UK\nFocuses on systems issues and looks at co-occurring factors\n\nSpeaker\nDr. Anjum Naweed CPE\, PhD\, MSc\, BSc (Hons) \n \nAnjum is an Associate Professor at Central Queensland University with over 15 years of experience across a range of industry sectors. He has a PhD in Psychology from Sheffield University (2011). Anjum has co-edited books\, written over 100 peer-reviewed articles and secured over $3 million in research funding. He currently serves a Scientific Editor for Applied Ergonomics and has been a Scientific Convenor for the Australasian Simulation Congress on four consecutive occasions. Anjum’s research has received numerous accolades and in 2018\, he received the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Researchers. DESCRIPTION:Keolis Downer is collaborating with the Department of Transport in Victoria to implement contemporary asset monitoring and analytics technologies into the Yarra Trams network to improve the performance of assets. Greg Williams is a risk and asset management professional with 35 years’ experience in the engineering and management of physical assets. He has a track record of achievement and leadership of engineering and asset management functions\, having worked in a variety of senior positions across the defence\, utilities\, telecommunications and rail industries. \nThroughout Greg’s career he has remained keenly interested in maintenance engineering\, reliability and process safety practices. He has delivered workshops\, university lectures\, professional training courses and technical papers on a variety of maintenance and asset management related subjects. The project encompassed: \n\nA 650-metre extension to the existing Tonsley rail line\, including an elevated single track over Sturt Road\, Laffers Triangle and Main South Road\, linking Flinders Medical Centre and Flinders University to the passenger rail network;\nConstruction of the new Flinders and Tonsley Railway Stations; and\,\nAn integrated shared pedestrian/cycle path adjacent the rail line from the new ramp located at the corner of Sturt Road and Birch Crescent to the new Flinders Station.\n\nThe new Flinders train line and new Tonsley and Flinders Railway Stations have opened for passenger services as of Tuesday 29 December 2020\, and are now operating under an enhanced timetable\, developed after extensive consultation. \nThe RTSA welcomes all RTSA members and non-members to to take-part in a site walk and discussions about the Flinders Link Project\, delivered by Brent Eddy\, Gateway South Design Manager. DESCRIPTION:This special event is co-hosted with Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) \nFelix Schmid\, Chair of the Railway Division of the IMechE for 2020-2021\, has chosen ‘The Long History and Exciting Future of Railway Systems Thinking’ as the theme for his Chair’s Address. \nHe will briefly discuss the concept of the railway as a system of systems and he will reflect on some of the good (and not so good) examples of systems thinking during the early development of the railway as a means of transport for goods and people. He will review some of the major technical breakthroughs that enable today’s high performance railways and he will reflect on some recent developments\, where he had an involvement. Felix will argue that not all technological progress is entirely fit for purpose. He will also include some thoughts on his career as an engineer and innovative educator \nSpeaker: Felix Schmid\nProgramme Director – MSc Railway Systems Engineering and Integration\, University of Birmingham\n\n\n\nBorn in Zürich\, Switzerland\, Felix Schmid graduated from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology with a degree in electrical and electronic engineering. Following a brief career in software analysis in his home country\, he moved to Manchester\, England\, to work for GEC Traction as a loco­motive con­trol systems engineer. \nIn 1982 he became a research engineer at UMIST and later a re­search assis­tant at the University of Salford. He then joined Brunel University as a lecturer in com­puter integ­rated manufacturing. In 1993\, he took up a post as a railway inspector with the Swiss Federal Office of Transport but realised quickly that he was not suited to a civil service role. After a year\, he re­turned to Britain and a senior lectureship at the University of Sheffield\, where he was employed to develop the MSc programme in Railway Systems Engineering. In 2005\, Felix and the programme transferred to the University of Birmingham and the Birmingham Centre for Railway Re­search and Education. Between 2005 and 2019\, he managed three railway related masters pro­grammes and he still supervises research in the areas of railway control\, railway operations and systems engineering. \nFelix became a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 2003. He is on the Board and the Executive of the Railway Division and has led four Railway Technical Tours between 2016 and 2019. He is currently involved in the planning of the Railway Technical Tour 2020. Felix Schmid has pro­vided contributions to many IMechE railway conferences and seminars\, including ten Young Members’ seminars. DESCRIPTION:Join mechanical engineer and rail and engineering history expert David Jehan as he describes the locomotives\, carriages and wagons produced for non-government operators prior to WWII. David will also describe the maintenance activities carried out for such operators during this period. \nSpeaker: David Jehan \nDavid Jehan has had a long career in mechanical engineering. He is the author of several definitive works on railway and engineering history\, including the Tulloch enterprise and most recently the story of Hudson Brothers at Clyde. He is presently working on the story of Clyde Engineering.
