SUMMARY:CORE Connect Webinar Series - Collaborative Rail R&D - Successes\, Challenges and Future Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Funded jointly by participating Australian rail organisations and the Commonwealth Government’s Cooperative Research Centres Program\, the Rail Manufacturing CRC began operations in 2014 for a term of six years\, with a focus of driving the development of new products\, technologies and supply chain networks to enhance the competitiveness of Australia’s rail manufacturing industry. Following the Rail Manufacturing CRC’s closure in June 2020\, this CORE Presentation will focus on sharing the Centre’s project successes\, challenges and future opportunities to pursue in rail R&D. \nWhat are the main take-aways/key learnings? \nThe presentation will provide an overview of the following: \n\nhistory of the industry push to set up a Rail Manufacturing CRC including the On Track to 2040 consultation;\nan overview of the RMCRC\, its focus on addressing the priorities of On Track to 2040 and the outcomes of these projects;\nthe significant changes the heavy haul and rail manufacturing sector over the last six years\, the consolidation of the industry and the effect on R&D;\nthe emerging skills shortage and the changing multi disciplinary technical skill sets to address future rail needs;\nfuture domestic opportunities; and\nlikely future R&D priorities (from an RMCRC perspective).\n\nKeynote Speaker: Stuart Thomson\, CEO of the Rail Manufacturing CRC \nStuart completed his PhD at the UNSW before undertaking postdoctoral studies at the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research in Germany. Upon returning to Australia\, he worked at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO)\, where he set up and led one of Australia’s key Nuclear and Radiological forensic and monitoring programs. Stuart moved to Note Printing Australia\, where he led the Technical Development group responsible for the initial development of the new banknote series\, banknote quality evaluation and the counterfeit analysis laboratory. DESCRIPTION:Light rail is having a huge resurgence across the world\, including in Australia. Melbourne has the world’s largest tram network\, but what can we learn from these new systems?  This seminar will focus on lessons learned from the operation of Melbourne’s light rail network\, benchmarking of interstate and international light rail networks and the development of Australia’s newest light rail systems in Newcastle\, Canberra\, Sydney and the Gold Coast. \nGuest Speakers: \nEmilie Van de Graaff: Director\, Passenger and Network Innovation\, Keolis Downer (Yarra Trams) \nEmilie believes that a sustainable public transport system forms an integral part of a liveable city\, contributing to positive outcomes for the citizens\, visitors and the environment.  Emilie works closely with the Department of Transport; her role encompasses network planning and development\, passenger experience and marketing\, accessibility and innovation. She has 20 years’ experience in the transport sector\, having worked at Transdev from 2011 to early 2017 and prior to that\, eleven years in the UK\, firstly for a public transport authority and later in a transport planning consultancy. \nScott Elaurant: Director and Principal\, Six Cats Consulting \nScott Elaurant is a transport planner with 35 years’ experience in infrastructure planning and business cases. He worked for Jacobs for 13 years in South Australia and prior to that for Queensland Transport and Main Roads. In recent years Scott has focused on light rail and other public transport projects. He was transport planning lead for the Auckland Light Rail. He was transport planning or concept design lead for the Glenelg Tram Stage1\, Stage 2 and Tram Overpass. Previously for QTMR he worked on a proposed Brisbane Light Rail\, South East Transit Busway and route planning for the Gold Coast LRT. Scott is a member of the US Transport Research Board Light Rail Committee. He is the chair of Transport Australia Society for South Australia. As Six Cats Consulting\, Scott offers services in planning and economics for active transport\, public transport (particularly light rail) and streetscapes.

He’s created technology world firsts\, written extensively and has a rare ability to communicate it all on stage. His high-octane keynote will change how you see the world. Steve starting coding at age 10 and had his first startup by age 12. He has since built and sold a number of businesses. As a futurist\, he’s ahead of his time. He launched one of the first Sharing Economy Startups – Rentoid.com in 2006. Respected global business media including Forbes\, Fast Company and TechCrunch credited it as the start of the sharing economy movement giving birth to Uber and Airbnb. Steve later sold it to a publicly traded company in Australia. \nHe is mentor for startup entrepreneurs and a technology investor. Steve’s ability to see the future is ratified by this fact: His portfolio has grown more than 100x the original investment. Steve built the world’s first drivable car entirely out of Lego. It’s had more than 100 million views globally. (He had to fight off Jay Leno who was desperate to have it in his garage). He put a toy space shuttle into actual earth orbit by hacking together a rig for under $2000\, and he’s on the technical advisory committee for the design of Australia’s new drone regulations. Steve is currently building the world’s most modern house – it will be 3D printed too! The subject of a new documentary film.

SUMMARY:SA Event - Structures on the Oaklands Rail Crossing Project
DESCRIPTION:Oaklands Rail Crossing was designed and constructed by the Public Transport Projects Alliance which consists of McConnell Dowell\, Arup\, Mott MacDonald and the Department of Planning\, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI). The project involved the grade separation of the Seaford rail line from the Morphett Road/ Diagonal Road intersection located in the South West of Adelaide. \nThe design solution was to lower the Seaford rail line underneath Morphett Road with a top down construction approach. To minimise disruption to the community\, the new section of railway and the new Oaklands station were largely constructed offline. Through close collaboration between the design and construction teams\, the rail closure was limited to 24 days\, during which time the new rail was tied into the existing and the station commissioned\, prior to being re-opened for public use. \nThis presentation will provide an overview of the structures on the project\, including discussion of the key design and construction challenges that were faced by the PTP Alliance. \nNote: This is not a RTSA Event but an EA event hosted by Engineers Australia Structural Branch (SA Chapter).

DESCRIPTION:The RTSA New Zealand and the Engineering New Zealand Auckland Branch invite you to a presentation from Professor Andrew McNaughton\, Strategic Advisor to the UK High Speed 2 Rail project in Auckland on Monday\, 19 August which will also be available for members elsewhere to view live online. \nAndrew McNaughton is a leading authority on high speed rail and chairs the World High Speed Rail Committee. He was the Chief Engineer for the UK High Speed 2 project from 2009 -17 and led the specification\, operational design\, technical strategy and route development for the project. He is currently leading the New South Wales government Fastrail strategy\, as part of its regional development and regeneration agenda\, and is Special Advisor to the Czech Republic Government on similar issues. Andrew is a Professorial Fellow at the University of Southampton and a visiting professor at Imperial College\, London\, and Nottingham University. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor McNaughton was a standout Keynote speaker at the 2010 RTSA Conference on Railway Excellence in Wellington and we are delighted that is able to speak to us during a very short visit to Auckland. \nAndrew’s presentation is very relevant to New Zealand given the current government interest in developing regional rail services to connect our major cities to regional centres. DESCRIPTION:Cleaning the Otira Tunnel \nThe RTSA NZ invite you to an encore of the above presentation in Wellington on Wednesday 31 July\, which will also be available to view as a live webinar. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNeil Mason\, Managing Director of Vitruvius Ltd\, has kindly agreed to make an encore performance of his fascinating presentation on cleaning the Otira Rail Tunnel\, originally given to the RTSA in April\, so that a wider New Zealand and international audience can participate. \nSituated on the Midland Line between Otira and Arthurs Pass in the South Island\, KiwiRail’s Otira rail Tunnel measures an impressive 8.566 km in length and runs through a harsh but fragile alpine environment. At the time of its opening in 1923 it was the longest tunnel in the southern hemisphere. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor the past 30 years the tunnel has conveyed trains carrying uncovered coal wagons up the steep 1 in 33 gradient from Otira\, combined with the ventilation system has deposited sand and coal dust on the floor and walls creating a “mountain range” balanced along the top of power and communication cables. A creative method had to be developed\, using innovative technology\, to remove the deposits by water jets and then remove the particulates from the water to comply with stringent environmental consent conditions\, before discharge into the nearby river. \nNeil has led many interesting and challenging rail projects through his 27 years in the rail industry in NZ and the UK.
