DESCRIPTION:Overview \nPlease join the RTSA and the Engineering Heritage Victoria group to recognise 100 years since the Electrification of the Melbourne Suburban Rail Network. This Heritage Marking Ceremony is to acknowledge the engineering achievement of the works\, and to recognise its heritage value to the city of Melbourne. \nIn May 1919\, the first regular passenger electric train services commenced on the Sandringham and Essendon suburban railway lines\, and by 1923\, this ambitious project for electrification of the Melbourne suburban railway lines was completed. At the time\, it was claimed to be the largest suburban railway network in the world to be successfully converted from steam locomotive to electric traction. It was an immediate success in terms of increasing rail patronage and reducing operating costs. \n  \n \nEvent program \n\n9.00-10.40 am: Morning tea and presentation by Ian Cook\n11.00-11.45 am: Heritage Marking ceremony\, Southern Cross Railway Station\, Collins Street\, West Melbourne\n\nPlease note\, it is optional to attend the morning tea and presentation and/or ceremony.
