SUMMARY:Site visit: RTSA – TasRail operations in Northern Tasmania
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nTasRail is pleased to invite members of the Railway Technical Society of Australasia (RTSA) to join us in Northern Tasmania for a unique technical visit showcasing key aspects of the state’s freight rail operations. \nThe visit will include a guided tour of TasRail’s East Tamar Maintenance Facility in Launceston\, the central hub for locomotive and rollingstock maintenance across the Tasmanian network. Participants will gain insight into the maintenance strategies and operational challenges associated with maintaining a geographically isolated freight railway\, as well as a first-hand look at the Locomotive Life Extension Project that is currently underway\, bringing back to life locomotives from the 1960’s and 70’s. \nMembers will also have the opportunity to observe remote control locomotive operations at Devonport\, where TasRail has successfully reinstated remote control technology within its cement train operations following the runaway event that occurred in 2018. SUMMARY:The Great Western Railway's world record holding battery train and the fast charge system
DESCRIPTION:Come and join us to learn about Great Western Railway’s entirely battery powered Class 230 battery electric multiple unit. The industry leading fast charge system enables automatic charging of the train batteries in as little as 3 minutes. Following a thorough testing programme\, this train has now entered passenger service. \nOn 19th/20th August 2025\, this unit travelled 200.5 miles on battery power which is a world record for the longest distance travelled by a battery train on a single charge. \nOur speaker will be Andrew Skinner\, Head of Engineering for Great Western Railway in the UK. Andrew is a Past Chair of the IMechE Railway division\, a Fellow of the IMechE and an IMechE Council Leadership Committee member. \nJoin us to hear the development story of the train\, the fast charge technology and the secrets behind the world record run. \nPlease RSVP below to gain access to the webinar link  \nAbout our speaker – Andrew Skinner \nAndrew joined British Rail from school as a sponsored undergraduate. He gained a BEng degree having studied Mechanical Engineering at Brunel University. \nAfter training in the heavy engineering workshops\, he became a member of the IMechE and a Chartered Engineer. Andrew’s first role was as a Technical Officer at Cardiff locomotive depot also deputising for Production Managers leading the maintenance teams. \nA promotion to Area Traction & Rolling Stock Engineer increased his responsibility for people and technical issues. He started a commercial interest having responsibility for the maintenance of steel wagons under contract which also opened his interest in the industrial railway history of South Wales and railfreight markets. \nFollowing a move to the West Midlands running locomotive and wagon depots; at rail privatisation Andrew moved back to Cardiff as the Depot Manager. To further his commercial skills\, he then became an Account Manager for the sales of infrastructure trains to Railtrack for track maintenance. \nHe took an opportunity as a Project Manager in Great Western Trains combing his skills. Initially managing an £18M upgrade to the High Speed Train fleet\, he has continued in various engineering roles including responsibility for four major depots and around 600 staff to his current role as Head of Engineering for the Great Western Railway. \nHis responsibilities have broadened over time and he now manages engineering technical & standards\, assurance\, data\, occupational safety\, an ISO certified management system and IT for one of the most diverse range of train fleets operating in the UK. \nAndrew’s involvement with IMechE began in the early 1990s as a committee member of the Railway Division South Western Centre. He went on to Chair the Centre and is currently the Treasurer. After becoming a Railway Division Board member\, Andrew went on to become Chair in 2023/24. He has also Chaired the Railway Engineers Forum\, remains an active professional mentor and is currently a member of the IMechE Council Leadership Committee.

Current safety approaches rely heavily on historical accident and near-miss data\, which can lead to reactive decision-making and an incomplete understanding of the underlying risk factors. This presentation explores how emerging technologies can provide deeper insight into the conditions and behaviours that drive risk at passive level crossings. By moving beyond traditional metrics\, we can better evaluate the effectiveness of existing controls and support the development of scalable\, cost-effective interventions that improve safety across the network. \nSpeaker: Dr Nithurshan Nadarajah\, Deputy Director\, Innovation\nNithurshan is the Deputy Director at the Monash Institute of Railway Technology\, with over a decade of experience driving innovation\, safety\, and strategic asset management in rail. He leads cross-functional teams to deliver data-driven transformation in condition monitoring\, product development\, and operational and asset management strategy—achieving measurable gains throughput\, safety and efficiency. Nithurshan holds a PhD in sensor technology for aircraft and is a Chartered Professional Engineer. \nSpeaker: Dr Kareeb Hasan\, Research Engineer\nDr Kareeb Hasan is a research engineer with expertise in sensor systems\, data analytics\, and infrastructure monitoring. With a PhD in engineering and experience at Monash IRT\, his work focuses on applying technology to improve transport safety\, system performance\, and operational decision-making. \n6:05 PM – Presentation 2: ’Quantitative Assessment of Visibility of Locomotives’\nSynopsis: \nSeveral control measures based on locomotive-mounted lighting have been suggested to improve the front-end visibility of freight locomotives. Trials have been conducted in Australia for two of these proposed measures. These are flashing beacons on locomotives and the conversion of locomotive headlights from halogen globes to Light-Emitting Diodes. The Monash Institute of Railway Technology (IRT) at Monash University undertook an independent assessment of these trials based on scientific principles. The aim was to develop a methodology to subjectively evaluate the change in conspicuity concerning lighting and luminance scheme modifications on locomotives. \n  \nSeveral trials were conducted in WA and NSW to assess the efficacy of locomotive lighting in enhancing locomotive conspicuity. The visual conspicuity of a freight locomotive depends not only on its brightness or shininess (quantified by its luminance value) but also on the average luminance of the surrounding background and viewing conditions (such as observation distance and angle). The intensity and colour of the light emitted from the locomotive\, along with factors like livery\, cleanliness\, and viewing settings\, influence the luminance of the locomotive. Visibility is also affected by natural light conditions\, weather\, sun position\, and ambient settings. \nIn clear daylight\, visibility improvements are highly dependent on a combination of headlight state\, viewing circumstances\, and sunlight direction. The headlight\, especially in high beam during the day\, significantly enhances frontal locomotive conspicuity\, particularly at greater distances. The visibility benefit diminishes when the locomotive is viewed at an angle. Findings suggest that\, under clear daylight or dense vegetation conditions\, adding beacon lights and side marker lights provides little to no enhancement in locomotive conspicuity. Conversely\, during night-time assessments\, notable improvements are observed in overall locomotive conspicuity\, especially with side marker lights. \nThe assessment also revealed a significant difference in luminance contrast levels between daytime and night-time for the same locomotive and lighting fixtures\, indicating that locomotives tend to be more visible at night. This may partly explain the substantial difference in recorded level crossing collisions during the day compared to at night. \nThe presentation will outline the approach and methodology used\, along with the trial findings. Some recommendations and ongoing work will also be highlighted. \n• Speaker: Dr. Elias Kassa\, Team Leader Track Infrastructure\, Co-Director Safe Sustainable Accessible Railway (S2ARail) GRIP\nElias Kassa is currently a Principal Track Engineer and Team Leader of Track Infrastructure at the Institute of Railway Technology (IRT) at Monash. He also acts as Co-director for the Safe Sustainable Accessible Railway – Graduate Research Industry Partnership\, an industry doctoral program focusing on railway topics. Prior to joining IRT\, he worked as a senior researcher and professor at universities in Europe\, specialising in a wide range of railway track issues and teaching graduate and postgraduate courses in railway engineering. \nWith over 23 years of experience in the railway industry\, he has developed extensive knowledge in track design\, turnouts\, wheel-rail interface\, and optimisation these systems. He has become a recognised expert in train-track interaction and turnout dynamics. DESCRIPTION:ASPECT is the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE) international technical conference\, held every two years at locations around the world.  \nASPECT 2023 Programme \nThe conference will run over three days\, delivering fifty one technical papers from global industry experts on the theme of Global Integration and will also feature several related workshop sessions. \nASPECT provides an unrivalled opportunity for learning and the exchange of knowledge in the fields of train control\, railway communications\, and related disciplines. The fourth day of the conference will provide a range of technical visits to complement the three technical days. \nThanks to ASPECT 2023 being held in one of the most liveable cities in the world\, we have secured the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre to host the three days of technical sessions. This world-class facility is in the heart of the Melbourne CBD and close to transport\, hotels\, and restaurants. It will take place from 08:30 Tuesday 21 to 17:00 Friday 24 November 2023 (local times). \nOne of the highlights of the week is the conference dinner which will be held at one of Melbourne’s iconic venues. Finally\, as it is a rail conference\, we have arranged a chartered steam train ride on the Puffing Billy Railway\, including site visits and evening dinner to top it off with. \nThe event has consistently attracted a wide of range of people in the industry with over 250 delegates from across the globe attending the last ASPECT conference.

DESCRIPTION:Brakes are indispensable and safety-critical systems for all types of railway trains including passenger (high-speed\, metro\, tram\, etc.) and freight trains (heavy-haul\, intermodal\, etc.). Safe and efficient railway operations require a good understanding of brakes from various parties including drivers\, maintenance crews\, manufacturers\, and design engineers. Brake research helps to expand and deepen the knowledge about railway train brakes. \nDriven by the rapid development of Intelligent Transport Systems and the ever-increasing demands for faster and heavier trains\, as well as energy savings and sustainability\, railway brake research has seen a new wave of interests from the industry and academia. Under these situations\, we propose an International Workshop on Railway Brake Research to boost brake research. The International Workshop on Railway Brake Research will be virtually hosted by CRE of Central Queensland University (Australia) and DIEF of University of Florence (Italy) from 19-20 September 2023. DESCRIPTION:Overview\nRio Tinto’s autonomous train is 2.4km long\, consists of three locomotives and carries around 28\,000 tonnes of iron ore\, it travels over 280km. It’s the world’s first fully autonomous\, long distance\, heavy-haul rail network. The trains are giant autonomous robots because once they are set on their course\, they make all the decisions. \nThe AutoHaul™ team monitor the trains remotely from the Operations Centre in Perth (over 1\,500km away)\, they set the route and once the train is running the on-board computers and the computers in the Operations Centre take over and control the train. From setting the speed\, to avoiding collisions\, checking for obstructions at crossings and verifying there are no faults\, damage or broken couplings. \nLearn more about the innovation behind this world-first technology. \n \nAbout the speaker\nLido Costa\, MIEAust CPEng NER APEC Engineer IntPE(Aus)\, Lead Technical Engineer\, Rio Tinto \nLido was the Lead Technical Engineer on the AutoHaul® Driverless Trains system. Lido was part of the project delivery leadership team responsible for all technical aspects of the system. As Technical Authority\, Lido was accountable for approving technical changes to the AutoHaul® system. This role represented the most senior level of engineering oversight for the AutoHaul® system\, on behalf of RTIO\, including approving of System Hardware and Software Architecture and Safety Assurance strategy. Lido has over 35 years’ experience in Railway Signalling\, Communications and Control Systems with leading roles in projects in Europe (such as the Madrid – Seville High Speed Line)\, Asia\, Africa and Australia. DESCRIPTION:Overview \nPlease join the RTSA and the Engineering Heritage Victoria group to recognise 100 years since the Electrification of the Melbourne Suburban Rail Network. This Heritage Marking Ceremony is to acknowledge the engineering achievement of the works\, and to recognise its heritage value to the city of Melbourne. \nIn May 1919\, the first regular passenger electric train services commenced on the Sandringham and Essendon suburban railway lines\, and by 1923\, this ambitious project for electrification of the Melbourne suburban railway lines was completed. At the time\, it was claimed to be the largest suburban railway network in the world to be successfully converted from steam locomotive to electric traction.
