SUMMARY:NZ Chapter Event: Mainline Track Upgrades: Auckland-Wellington and Sydney-Melbourne
DESCRIPTION:Join the Railway Technical Society of Australasia New Zealand Chapter online with Dr Philip Laird to discuss ‘Mainline Track Upgrades: Auckland – Wellington and Sydney – Melbourne’ at 12:30-1:30pm NZT on the 17th November 2021. \nRegister here. \nAuckland and Wellington are linked by the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) narrow gauge railway of length 681km. Sydney and Melbourne are now linked by a standard gauge railway of length 960 km. Both railways include challenging terrain. \nAn outline is given of former improvements for each of the NIMT railway and the Melbourne to Sydney railway that include deviations for grade easing. Many of the NIMT deviations have led to a reduction in distance. By way of contrast\, each NSW main south line deviation has resulted in extra distance. Further contrasts include electrification of most of the NIMT during the 1980s\, and\, the NIMT gaining Centralised traffic control signalling for most of its length some 42 years ahead of the Melbourne to Sydney railway. \nSome planned and possible upgrades are outlined for the NIMT. The paper concludes that in order for the Sydney Melbourne railway to win more freight and passenger traffic\, some track straightening is essential. \nSpeaker\nDr Philip Laird\nHonorary Associate Professor\, the University of Wollongong \nDr Philip Laird is a graduate of Victoria University of Wellington\, the Australian National University in Canberra and the University of Calgary in Canada. He is currently an Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Wollongong and his land transport research appears in journals and refereed conference papers. \nHis recent work includes the potential benefits of the development of Medium Speed Rail to connect for NSW regional centres to Sydney and an Inland Railway linking Melbourne and Brisbane though Parkes being constructed to modern engineering standards. \nOn Australia Day 2021 Philip was awarded an OAM “For service to the rail freight and passenger transport industry.” \nClick here register on the Engineering New Zealand website.

SUMMARY:VIC/TAS Chapter Event: Circular economy: Converting Plastic and Polystyrene Waste into Durable Composite Railway Sleepers
DESCRIPTION:The Duratrack® railway sleeper is produced from recycled plastic materials\, which have already had a primary use in other applications\, and forms a step part of the circular economy for these materials. The sleeper is a longer-lasting and more durable alternative to traditional timber railway sleepers\, offering maintenance benefits and eliminating the escalating challenge to source significant quantities of quality timber stock. \nStephen Webster\, General Manager of Integrated Recycling\, will speak about the development and current status of the Duratrack® recycled plastic railway sleeper\, including the development journey from concept to production\, performance characteristics\, comparison to alternative solutions\, the testing and validation processes\, type approvals\, operational experience to date\, and the future outlook for the technology. Time has been allowed for audience Q&A\, as well as networking and canapés. “We have broken new ground in a safety conscious engineering environment. \nA lot of things were done for the first time and the onus was on us to show proof of performance. All this takes time!” Stephen will also speak about the collaboration with the Institute of Railway Technology\, Monash University\, the Victorian Government\, and accredited rail operators in bringing about this innovation. The creation of the Duratrack® sleeper turned out to be the simpler first step. Validating the sleeper’s performance in a then standards-free environment and seeking collaborative partners to trial the sleepers was the real challenge. Collaboration with The Institute of Railway Technology at Monash was critical to the development journey. Queensland Rail’s tender for composite sleepers to replace timber sleepers is a model structure for change and innovation. \nSpeaker\n \nStephen Webster \nStephen Webster has a strong track record of developing businesses since moving away from the practice of law. Stephen is the general manager of Integrated Recycling the manufacturer and distributor of a range of composite recycled plastic products that have landscaping\, industrial and agricultural applications. Since conception in 2014\, Stephen has led the development of the Duratrack® composite recycled plastic railway sleeper. \nClick here to register for the webinar now!

SUMMARY:RTSA Special Event (jointly with IMechE): Felix Schmid - "The Long History and Exciting Future of Railway Systems Thinking"
DESCRIPTION:This special event is co-hosted with Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) \nFelix Schmid\, Chair of the Railway Division of the IMechE for 2020-2021\, has chosen ‘The Long History and Exciting Future of Railway Systems Thinking’ as the theme for his Chair’s Address. \nHe will briefly discuss the concept of the railway as a system of systems and he will reflect on some of the good (and not so good) examples of systems thinking during the early development of the railway as a means of transport for goods and people. He will review some of the major technical breakthroughs that enable today’s high performance railways and he will reflect on some recent developments\, where he had an involvement. Felix will argue that not all technological progress is entirely fit for purpose. He will also include some thoughts on his career as an engineer and innovative educator \nSpeaker: Felix Schmid\nProgramme Director – MSc Railway Systems Engineering and Integration\, University of Birmingham\n\n\n\nBorn in Zürich\, Switzerland\, Felix Schmid graduated from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology with a degree in electrical and electronic engineering. Following a brief career in software analysis in his home country\, he moved to Manchester\, England\, to work for GEC Traction as a locomotive control systems engineer. \nIn 1982 he became a research engineer at UMIST and later a research assistant at the University of Salford. He then joined Brunel University as a lecturer in computer integrated manufacturing. In 1993\, he took up a post as a railway inspector with the Swiss Federal Office of Transport but realised quickly that he was not suited to a civil service role. After a year\, he returned to Britain and a senior lectureship at the University of Sheffield\, where he was employed to develop the MSc programme in Railway Systems Engineering. In 2005\, Felix and the programme transferred to the University of Birmingham and the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education.
