This event is free to attend. \nOverview\nThe METRONET Morley-Ellenbrook Line\, spanning 21 km\, stands as Perth’s most substantial public transportation initiative since the inception of the Mandurah Line. This progressive addition effectively extends the burgeoning rail transport network of Perth to cater to its north-eastern suburbs. \nEncompassing the initiative are five novel stations\, various structures such as bridges and underpasses\, the incorporation of two dive structures\, elevated rail and seamless integration with Tonkin Highway\, a key thoroughfare in Perth known for its persistent traffic congestion. \nThis site visit to the METRONET Morley-Ellenbrook Line will be dedicated to an in-depth examination of rail operational aspects\, the feasibility of construction approaches and the incorporation of cutting-edge construction technologies. \nWe request for participants to be a minimum Rail Industry worker supervised worker inducted (RIW number must be provided to enter the site tour). \nLearning outcomes\nParticipants will gain a deeper understanding of: \n\nconstruction in the rail industry\nproject management in a multidisciplinary environment\nthe latest rail technology\n\nAbout the speaker\n \nRobert Keenan \nProject Lead\, Rail Operations WA \nRob is a highly qualified rail construction professional with over 26 years of experience in the rail industry. Having spent eight years of his career in Europe’s high-pressure transportation industry\, he is accustomed to delivering results in live rail environments both safely and on time. Rob has worked on a number of large-scale and complex rail projects and has extensive experience on various rail networks. His relevant project experience includes the $50m Rio Tinto Track Renewals Mega Shutdown and the $955m Sydney Central Station Main Works project. Rob is experienced in key leadership positions in collaborative contracting infrastructure rail projects of a similar nature\, both in Australia and the UK. DESCRIPTION:ASPECT is the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE) international technical conference\, held every two years at locations around the world.  \nASPECT 2023 Programme \nThe conference will run over three days\, delivering fifty one technical papers from global industry experts on the theme of Global Integration and will also feature several related workshop sessions. \nASPECT provides an unrivalled opportunity for learning and the exchange of knowledge in the fields of train control\, railway communications\, and related disciplines. The fourth day of the conference will provide a range of technical visits to complement the three technical days. \nThanks to ASPECT 2023 being held in one of the most liveable cities in the world\, we have secured the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre to host the three days of technical sessions. This world-class facility is in the heart of the Melbourne CBD and close to transport\, hotels\, and restaurants. It will take place from 08:30 Tuesday 21 to 17:00 Friday 24 November 2023 (local times). \nOne of the highlights of the week is the conference dinner which will be held at one of Melbourne’s iconic venues. Finally\, as it is a rail conference\, we have arranged a chartered steam train ride on the Puffing Billy Railway\, including site visits and evening dinner to top it off with. \nThe event has consistently attracted a wide of range of people in the industry with over 250 delegates from across the globe attending the last ASPECT conference.

SUMMARY:Bus tour of the Thornlie-Cockburn Link (TCL)
DESCRIPTION:The RTSA WA chapter invites you to join a bus tour of the Thornlie-Cockburn Link (TCL). \nThis site visit is a bus tour of the TCL alignment and will focus on an in-depth overview of the design and construction of a pair each of freight and passenger rail each in a pre-existing corridor in brownfield conditions. It will be hosted by two senior leaders involved in the project: Graham Holden and Maneesh Gupta. \nPlease register below\, limited to 30 places \nOverview\nThe METRONET Thornlie-Cockburn Link spans 17 km and marks the first ever connection between two separate branches of the ‘star’ shaped Perth passenger rail network. \nPreviously\, the Thornlie line was a single (dual direction) train line that spurred from the Beckenham station and terminated at Thornlie Station. The TCL project involved the duplication of this line as well as the extension of this line to Cockburn station. \nThis involved modifications to the existing Thornlie and Cockburn stations as well as the construction of two new stations at Nicholson and Ranford Rd. The project also runs through two existing tunnels at Kenwick and Glen Iris. \nThis brownfield project faced many challenges from the relocation of the existing freight rail to the realignment of the existing Mandurah line to fit the new electrified passenger tracks. \nThe rail line opened for passenger services on 9th June 2025 and is fully operational. \nLearning Outcomes\nParticipants will gain an insight into: \n\nThe design and construction of passenger and freight railway.\nChallenges of design and construction in brownfield conditions.\nInnovations\, safety\, and community benefits.\n\nAbout the Speakers\nGraham Holden \n Graham Holden is Engineering Manager for the NEWest Alliance which delivered the Thornlie-Cockburn Link and the Yanchep Rail Extension projects for the Public Transport Authority. Graham has more than 35 years’ experience in rail across engineering delivery\, design\, maintenance and operations. He is a Chartered Engineer\, EngExec and Fellow of Engineers Australia and holds a Masters degree in Rail Systems Engineering. Graham is a past Executive Chair of the RTSA and was the Conference Organising Committee Chair of CORE2021 Conference on Railway Excellence\, held here in Perth. He is also a sessional lecturer in railway engineering at Edith Cowan University. \nManeesh Gupta \nA business leader\, Chartered Professional Engineer and senior project manager/project director with over 25 years’ experience in the freight and transit rail industries. This includes 11 years in operation and maintenance of rail network assets with strong focus on railway track maintenance  As DM/PM/PD or technical lead\, Maneesh has delivered over 150 rail projects of various sizes and complexity in WA in the last 15 years including freight and passenger rail projects. Maneesh is well known in the industry for his strong technical advisory skills for design\, upgrade and maintenance of below rail infrastructure.
