SUMMARY:EA Event (Webinar) - Costa Rica's San Jose Metro Build and Tunnelling Project
DESCRIPTION:Mobility is an important issue for all cities\, big or small\, since traffic and congestion are common urban problems everywhere. San José\, the capital city of Costa Rica\, is not an exception. \nDifferent efforts have been made so far to address the growing mobility problem of the city\, where people can spend more than 90 minutes to go through its 8.5 km length during rush hours. Most of these efforts are not enough and the city continues to be a hard-to-travel place. Thus\, alternative solutions as light train\, Tram\, monorail\, RTB or a Metro have been proposed to improve mobility in the future. \nThis presentation focuses on one of these proposed projects: an underground metro system. Considered as one of the most financial resources demanding solutions it is\, at the same time\, the most effective. The proposed solution comprises four lanes\, developed in progressive stages for a total cost of US$4.7 billion for 48.4 km total length and approximately 17 years of continuous construction. The project is only at the preliminary stage and it is not an approved project\, but a proposal from a group of the civil society to improve the quality of life of Costa Rican inhabitants. Private funding is seen as the only realistic means to develop such a project under a concession scheme. \nSpeaker: Marco Tapio\, Civil Engineer\, University of Costa Rica \nMarco Tapia is a Civil Engineer from the University of Costa Rica\, where he also obtained\, with honours\, a Master of Science Degree in Geotechnics. In addition\, he obtained a Master’s degree in Tunnels and Tunnel Boring Machines at the Polytechnic of Turin\, Italy. \nMarco is a professor of the Master’s in Civil Engineering at the University of Costa Rica where he teaches the Underground Engineering course\, as well as at the Costa Rican Institute of Technology where he teaches the Applied Geology course for the Construction Engineering degree. His experience is extensive in the design and constru \n(Note: This is an EA webinar event\, costs may be applicable) \nClick on the link below to register

SUMMARY:Special Webinar RTSA Awards 2020 and Guest Talk: "The Mobility Revolution" from Futurist Steve Sammartino
DESCRIPTION:Technology and human movement are inextricably linked. The level of our technology is dictated by the how\, where and why of travel and\, while it is easy to believe we are going through a digital revolution – it’s actually all about mobility. Mobility of information\, data\, energy\, people and work.  In this presentation\, keynote speaker Steve Sammartino\, will break down the underlying theme and explore how transport will morph in the future and what it means for industry\, where and how we work and live. The good news is that we are the generation that gets to reshape it all. \nPrior to the presentation the Railway Technical Society of Australasia (RTSA) will announce the following awards. \n\nRailway Student Thesis Award\nRailway PhD Thesis Award\nRailway Professional of the Year Award\nRTSA Individual Award\nRTSA Biennial Railway Project Award\n\nKeynote Speaker: Steve Sammartino \nSteve is Australia’s leading Futurist. He’s created technology world firsts\, written extensively and has a rare ability to communicate it all on stage. His high-octane keynote will change how you see the world. Steve starting coding at age 10 and had his first startup by age 12. He has since built and sold a number of businesses. As a futurist\, he’s ahead of his time. He launched one of the first Sharing Economy Startups – Rentoid.com in 2006. Respected global business media including Forbes\, Fast Company and TechCrunch credited it as the start of the sharing economy movement giving birth to Uber and Airbnb. Steve later sold it to a publicly traded company in Australia. \nHe is mentor for startup entrepreneurs and a technology investor. Steve’s ability to see the future is ratified by this fact: His portfolio has grown more than 100x the original investment. Steve built the world’s first drivable car entirely out of Lego. It’s had more than 100 million views globally. (He had to fight off Jay Leno who was desperate to have it in his garage). He put a toy space shuttle into actual earth orbit by hacking together a rig for under $2000\, and he’s on the technical advisory committee for the design of Australia’s new drone regulations. Steve is currently building the world’s most modern house – it will be 3D printed too! The subject of a new documentary film.

SUMMARY:RTSA WA Chapter Event (Webinar) - Mission-Critical Services (MCX) vs Future Railway Mobile Communications System (FRMCS)
DESCRIPTION:In the last 5 years\, railway operators around the world have started to deploy new radio networks based on advanced radio mobile (LTE). Some of these implementations have followed the Mission-Critical Services (MCX) standards defined by 3GPP Releases 13 and 14; these are currently supporting railway operational voice services and Automatic Train Control applications. \nAt the same time\, the International Railway Union (UIC) has been working in defining a Future Railway Mobile Communications System (FRMCS) as part of 3GPP Release 16 standards. FRMCS is planned to become the official successor technology of GSM-R as the standard radio bearer for ETCS. \nThe presentation will explore the relationship between these two mobile radio sets of standards\, their differences and similarities\, potential migration paths between them and the extent at which the 5G roadmap will impact either of them. \nThis presentation was originally written for the 2020 RTSA Conference on Railway Excellence\, which has been postponed to June 2021 due to the unfolding Covid-19 situation. A further update on this rapidly-developing field is planned for CORE2021. \nSpeaker: Rodrigo Alavarez \nRodrigo’s first railway role began in 2004\, when he started to work as a design and project engineer in the Spanish High Speed Rail GSM-R deployment.  Rodrigo moved to London (UK) in 2007 to work as a design engineer for Network Rail’s Cambrian Lines ERTMS project. In 2009\, Rodrigo joined Network Rail’s Crossrail Programme as a Senior Design Engineer responsible for ETCS L2 GSM-R Upgrade.  In 2012\, Rodrigo moved to Perth (WA) to lead Titan ICT Consultants’ rail division. He has been involved since 2013 with the Public Transport Authority of WA\, acting as Senior Project Engineer for PTA’s Radio Systems Replacement project and supporting PTA’s High Capacity Signalling project  Since 2017\, Rodrigo has simultaneously acted as the Practice Director of the Telecommunications consulting arm of Rail Systems Australia. In that capacity\, he has supported the company to expand its operation from Perth and Brisbane into Sydney and Melbourne\, working for clients like Sydney Trains\, Transport for NSW\, VicTrack and Public Transport Victoria\, while continuing to be heavily involved in PTA’s Radio Systems Replacement project. \nClick on the link below to register

SUMMARY:RTSA WA Event - Rail alignment re-baselining: a way to improve track maintenance effectiveness
DESCRIPTION:In the recent years\, increase in the axle load is one of the key contributors in the freight rail transport throughput. However\, accelerated deterioration in the track geometry parameters is inevitable as a result. Rail alignment on heavy haul railways has undergone long term unintended changes due to increase in axle load and throughput such that the existing alignment significantly varies from the as built alignment several years ago. \nTrack geometry elements and parameters are critical determinants of reliability and maintainability of track assets. The designated geometry and geometry parameters are used as the target during track maintenance. Quality and effectiveness of track maintenance is compromised\, and the risk of incidents is enhanced if the track geometry and parameters continue in degraded condition for prolonged periods. A fresh ‘as existing’ survey facilitates re-baselining the design alignment as the reference for the track maintenance in the future\, to improve effectiveness of track maintenance. \nThis presentation is based on a recent project undertaken by BHP Rail Engineering and AECOM. \nAbout the speakers: \nKsenija Stanic-Colic\, Superintendent Governance & Technical Stewardship\, Rail Engineering/WAIO\, BHP \nKsenija is a qualified Track and Civil Engineer who has over 25 years of practical experience in rail and mining industry\, regional and metro based.  She started her professional career with Croatian Railways where she was working in track maintenance area and managing smaller size upgrade projects.  During her professional career in Australia for the last 20 years she was working in capacity of Senior and Lead Railway/Track and Civil Engineer and Technical Lead on the major mining and metro railway projects in Western Australia. \nShe is currently working in BHP Western Australia Iron Ore Rail engineering department in Superintendent Governance and Technical Stewardship role where she leads\, coaches and mentors team members to ensure technical support\, compliance to the standards and statutory legislation. She embraces and leads introduction of new technologies for the further improvements and betterment of the network assets.  Ksenija is passionate about sharing her experiences and learnings with the broader rail industry through Engineers Australia and globally. She proud herself in providing support and leadership to graduate engineers across Engineering team in BHP. \nManeesh Gupta\, Technical Director – Rail\, AECOM \nManeesh a Technical Director at AECOM in Perth. He is a business leader\, a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of Engineers Australia with over 25 years’ experience in the transit and freight rail industries. He is also an MBA from Manchester business School\, UK.  Maneesh has a solid track record as a rail industry engineering specialist. Through his career\, he has worked for rail owner operators\, governments\, construction contractors and consultants. SUMMARY:RTSA WA Event - Artificial Intelligence for Digital Train Control
DESCRIPTION:Most train control systems require a human driver to interpret real time information and respond to this information. The human driver controls the vehicle following the defined rules. Adherence to the rules is often supervised with automated interventions to mitigate the risk of human error\, for example\, if the driver exceeds their authority (distance/speed). The driver/attendant can also react to unexpected events (degraded\, abnormal and emergency situations). \nThe notable exceptions are the increasing number of automated metros (GoA4) that successfully provide high performance services within segregated environments with minimal variance (pre-programmed). The next evolution is to provide similar levels of automation and performance on open networks (mainline and light rail) where the environment cannot be easily controlled. Ultimately\, as we move away from human driven vehicles and network management\, outside the relative simplicity of the metro environment\, autonomous systems will be required to handle all the unexpected events on the rail network\, similarly to autonomous cars\, necessitating the introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Autonomous rail has less variables\, but potentially more catastrophic consequences. The train control systems that are developed will need to consider the sensors available on-board and the information available from the connected network and how this information is processed and acted upon. \nWhen managed correctly AI has the potential to significantly improve safety. However\, to achieve societal acceptance research from the autonomous car industry suggest that this may need to be about two orders of magnitude better that the average driver. A suitable approach is required with society with respect to the use of AI. A period of increasing AI support for drivers (semi-autonomous)\, with a transition over to AI driving (autonomous)\, will be required. The expected approach is longitudinal testing\, required for developing an inductive long-term dynamic safety case (‘proven in use’). Through aggressive training environments that use training sets and test conditions that place the system in ‘extreme’ operating environments and in-service experience with a driver present to ensure AI algorithms are able to operate safety with the eventual operational demands. \nAbout the speakers: \nDavid Milburn\, Senior Technical Director\, Global Leader – Digital Train Control\, GHD\, Australia \nDavid Milburn is a Chartered Engineer with over twenty-years international railway experience.  David started his railway career when he joined the British Rail S&T graduate scheme. SUMMARY:RTSA - NZ Chapter Event and Webinar - How faster rail changes the economic & social landscape
DESCRIPTION:The RTSA New Zealand and the Engineering New Zealand Auckland Branch invite you to a presentation from Professor Andrew McNaughton\, Strategic Advisor to the UK High Speed 2 Rail project in Auckland on Monday\, 19 August which will also be available for members elsewhere to view live online. \nAndrew McNaughton is a leading authority on high speed rail and chairs the World High Speed Rail Committee. He was the Chief Engineer for the UK High Speed 2 project from 2009 -17 and led the specification\, operational design\, technical strategy and route development for the project. He is currently leading the New South Wales government Fastrail strategy\, as part of its regional development and regeneration agenda\, and is Special Advisor to the Czech Republic Government on similar issues. Andrew is a Professorial Fellow at the University of Southampton and a visiting professor at Imperial College\, London\, and Nottingham University. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor McNaughton was a standout Keynote speaker at the 2010 RTSA Conference on Railway Excellence in Wellington and we are delighted that is able to speak to us during a very short visit to Auckland. \nAndrew’s presentation is very relevant to New Zealand given the current government interest in developing regional rail services to connect our major cities to regional centres. He will draw upon his worldwide experience and demonstrate how using faster rail services to increase the distance that people can travel within defined time periods\, through faster rail services\, such as 30 minute cross city trips\, 1 hour commutes and 2 hour regional connectivity\, results in new economic activity and land use development opportunities. \nThe presentation will  be broadcast as a live webinar for those unable to attend in person. \nPlease use the registration link below to indicate whether you will attend the presentation in Auckland or join online. For those attending in Auckland\, there will be an opportunity for networking with drinks and nibbles provided after the presentation. \nThanks to EY for kindly hosting the meeting and to Beca for sponsoring the networking drinks and nibbles. \n\nMonday 19 August\, 5pm\nEY Offices\, 2 Takutai Square\, Britomart\, Auckland 1010\nRegister here \n\n
