SUMMARY:NZ Chapter Event: North Auckland Line (NAL) – Bridge and Tunnel upgrade works
DESCRIPTION:Join the RTSA New Zealand Chapter in Wellington\, Auckland\, Christchurch or online for a presentation on North Auckland Line (NAL) – Bridge and Tunnel upgrade works. Register here. \nThis presentation will consist of 2 parts: \n\nBridge presentation by Holmes Consulting\nTunnel presentation by Aurecon\n\nPart 1: Bridge Presentation by Holmes Consulting\nForming part of the Northland Rail Upgrade Project\, Five Bridges were replaced across the North Auckland Rail Line. With 9 months programmed from awarding tender for design to practical competition of construction\, programme posed a significant hurdle. Along with Covid-19 restrictions and the resulting supply chain issues\, the project called for a ‘one team’ approach. Where possible\, standardisation was implemented across the project and fast construction techniques such as segmental bridge construction were adopted to reduce onsite construction time. The presentation looks to cover some key challenges that the design team faced throughout the project journey. \nMatt Ireland – Senior Project Engineer – Holmes Consulting\nMatt is based in Holmes Consulting’s Christchurch office and has over 14 years of structural engineering experience in the design of bridges and civil structures. He specialises in the delivery of major infrastructure projects across the country and has been involved with a number of significant road\, rail and pedestrian bridge structures. \nAidan is based in Holmes Consulting’s Auckland office and has been working in the civil structures team for 4 years since graduating from university. In this time he has worked across a number of horizontal infrastructure projects\, carving an interest in soil-structure interaction and construction management. \nPart 2: Tunnel presentation by Aurecon\nLouise\, Harry and Shu Fan will together talk about the tunnel design on the NRU. \nIn Northland Rail Upgrade Project (NRU)\, Shu Fan was the tunnel design lead for the 7 out of 13 most challenging tunnels of the North Auckland Line (NAL). Shu Fan Chau is an Associate in tunnels and the NZ Tunnel Lead at Aurecon. In addition to TBM tunnelling\, his wide-ranging tunnel expertise includes mined tunnels and caverns\, drill and blast tunnelling\, immersed tube tunnelling\, cut- and-cover tunnels\, deep excavation\, underground structures\, site formation and slope works. Shu Fan has worked on Waterview Tunnels in Auckland\, West Gate Tunnels in Melbourne and is currently working in City Rail Link. \nHarry Asche is a Design Director in Aurecon and he has worked on tunnels in New Zealand\, Australia\, UK and HK.  He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Queensland and is the current President of the Australian Tunnelling Society. \nLouise Wotton is a computational designer at Aurecon\, Computational design works to improve delivery through creation of custom digital tools and the development of automated pipelines to produce consistent\, high quality deliverables. \nDuring the North Auckland Line upgrade Aurecon developed a custom software package to generate rail gauges along the alignment and run clearance analysis checks. Over the course of the project this evolved to include drawing automation\, kinematic calculations and generative solvers to build a ‘best fit’ for a new alignment in the tunnels to accommodate new rolling stock. \n\nYou can join us in person or online for this event: \n\nWellington – Engineering New Zealand\, L6\, 40 Taranaki Street\nAuckland – Aurecon\, Level 3/185 Fanshawe Street\nChristchurch – Aurecon\, Level 2\, Iwikau Building\, 93 Cambridge Terrace\nOnline via MS Teams (Please note online start time is 6pm)\n\nClick here register on the Engineering New Zealand website.

SUMMARY:NZ Chapter Event: Working Stress- the New Zealand rail bridge rating story
DESCRIPTION:Join the RTSA New Zealand Chapter and Mike Keenan (KiwiRail) to hear about the history of how rail bridges in New Zealand are “rated”. This presentation is being held as an RTSA New Zealand online meeting. \nKiwiRail maintains a substantial rail infrastructure network of which its bridge stock are an essential component. These bridges have been developed over the 160 year life time of New Zealand’s railway and are a key enabler of the networks overall capacity. How these bridges are “rated” to determine their load carrying ability has likewise developed over time. This presentation will describe the background to choices made\, the influence of other overseas railways\, how the rating is now done and some of the challenges that the network faces. \nMike Keenan is part of the team responsible for engineering oversight of KiwiRail’s structures assets. He has been working on inspection\, maintenance and renewal of the rail network in New Zealand for the past 15 years. \nClick here register on the Engineering New Zealand website.

SUMMARY:VIC/TAS Chapter Event: Circular economy: Converting Plastic and Polystyrene Waste into Durable Composite Railway Sleepers
DESCRIPTION:The Duratrack® railway sleeper is produced from recycled plastic materials\, which have already had a primary use in other applications\, and forms a step part of the circular economy for these materials. The sleeper is a longer-lasting and more durable alternative to traditional timber railway sleepers\, offering maintenance benefits and eliminating the escalating challenge to source significant quantities of quality timber stock. \nStephen Webster\, General Manager of Integrated Recycling\, will speak about the development and current status of the Duratrack® recycled plastic railway sleeper\, including the development journey from concept to production\, performance characteristics\, comparison to alternative solutions\, the testing and validation processes\, type approvals\, operational experience to date\, and the future outlook for the technology. Time has been allowed for audience Q&A\, as well as networking and canapés. “We have broken new ground in a safety conscious engineering environment. \nA lot of things were done for the first time and the onus was on us to show proof of performance. All this takes time!” Stephen will also speak about the collaboration with the Institute of Railway Technology\, Monash University\, the Victorian Government\, and accredited rail operators in bringing about this innovation. The creation of the Duratrack® sleeper turned out to be the simpler first step. Validating the sleeper’s performance in a then standards-free environment and seeking collaborative partners to trial the sleepers was the real challenge. Collaboration with The Institute of Railway Technology at Monash was critical to the development journey. Queensland Rail’s tender for composite sleepers to replace timber sleepers is a model structure for change and innovation. \nSpeaker\n \nStephen Webster \nStephen Webster has a strong track record of developing businesses since moving away from the practice of law. Stephen is the general manager of Integrated Recycling the manufacturer and distributor of a range of composite recycled plastic products that have landscaping\, industrial and agricultural applications. Since conception in 2014\, Stephen has led the development of the Duratrack® composite recycled plastic railway sleeper. \nClick here to register for the webinar now!

SUMMARY:Event: The Effectiveness of Rail Web Dampers and How They are Selected and Implemented
DESCRIPTION:Rail dampers were developed in the 1990s as a way of reducing noise from railways. They work by attaching to the existing rail directly between fasteners\, and by reducing vibration in the rails the amount of noise produced is reduced. However\, rail dampers are also able to improve long-term rail conditions and reduce costs of maintenance over the asset lifecycle. \nSpeaker\nLuke Zoontjens\nTechnical Director – Acoustics & Vibration at SLR Consulting Australia Pty Ltd\nAcoustics engineering consultant with 18 years of professional experience and a focus on technical research and business development. Practice lead\, responsible for delivery of acoustical engineering services in Western Australia for environmental consultancy firm SLR Consulting Australia Pty Ltd. Special interests are in transportation noise and vibration\, education and healthcare facility design; building services noise control and architectural acoustics; specialist recording and performance spaces; environmental noise impact studies; and advanced technical investigations. \n\n\n \nClick here to register for the webinar now!

SUMMARY:NSW Chapter Event: Rail Safety and SFAIRP – How to Get it Right\, Every Time
DESCRIPTION:Join the RTSA New South Wales Chapter for a presentation on SFAIRP with Ian Mash online at 12:00-1:00pm AEST on Thursday 5th August. \nThis presentation seeks to explore the context\, use and pitfalls in the application of the principle underpinning the legislative duty to ensure safety\, So Far As Is Reasonably Practicable (SFAIRP). The concept is neither new\, nor difficult to understand\, and significantly\, is not difficult to demonstrate adequately. Despite SFAIRP having been an essential ingredient of the Work\, Health and Safety (WH&S) and Rail Safety legislation in both Australia and New Zealand for a while\, our industry often struggles to understand the activities required to meet the duty\, and to acknowledge the inherent requirements to apply what one knows\, or ought reasonably to know. Many in our industry have a strong view on SFAIRP\, but not all necessarily understand it sufficiently to avoid barking up the wrong tree in delivering a safe railway. This presentation includes some worked examples (audience participation is optional!) to demonstrate that a robust\, tabulated SFAIRP demonstration (rather than ambit claim) can be completed quickly\, and relatively painlessly once the principles are mastered. \nSpeaker\nIan Mash\nDirector\, Assured Rail Projects Pty Ltd \nIan has been active in the system safety and regulatory in Australasia since 2004. Ian’s portfolio of successful projects mirrors the breadth of our industry: passenger\, freight\, light rail and infrastructure projects\, from west to east coast of Australia\, and reaches across the Tasman to NZ. Having established Assured Rail Projects in 2018\, Ian has focused exclusively on this niche area of our industry. Ian is a Director of Assured Rail Projects\, a Fellow and Council member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and is a “dog person”. \nClick here register on the Engineers Australia website. \nImage taken from Engineers Australia website

SUMMARY:QLD Chapter Event - Promoting Competition in the Interstate Rail Freight Market
DESCRIPTION:Join RTSA Qld Chapter in Brisbane for a presentation from Dean Gannaway\, Regulatory Economist\, discussing the role of competition in addressing the decline in rail’s modal share. \nCompetition policy reforms in the 1990s established third-party access regimes for the rail sector with the view to promoting entry and competition in the downstream rail haulage market. This was accompanied by corporatisation\, privatisation and in some instances\, structural separation. Outside of the heavy haul coal rail networks this model has had limited success in achieving the policy objectives with the Australian Interstate Rail Freight Market remaining highly concentrated with two rail operators under monopolistic competition. \nDean will look at the relevant factors which contribute to creating barriers to entry into the interstate rail freight haulage market and the role of competition in this market in addressing the ongoing decline in rail’s modal share. \nPresenter: Dean Gannaway | Experienced Regulatory Economist \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nClick here to register!

SUMMARY:SA Chapter Event - Casual Complexity in Track Worker Safety Incidents
DESCRIPTION:Whilst accidents and near misses are occupational hazards of Track Workers\, serious incidents expose issues and vulnerabilities where the safety of the system itself is ultimately breached. Unfortunately\, such breaches are all too common. This presentation focuses on the results of a cross-country study (Australia and UK) on Lookout working—the primary means of protecting a work group when track workers have to carry out their tasks between passing trains. It is one of the most vulnerable methods of work in rail today. The findings of this study\, a meta-analysis of 31 incidents\, revealed that casual and contributing factors in such incidents are not necessary what you may expect… \n The webinar will discuss: \n\nA systematic review and meta-analysis of Lookout-related track worker incidents\nUses data across Australia and UK\nFocuses on systems issues and looks at co-occurring factors\n\nSpeaker\nDr. Anjum Naweed CPE\, PhD\, MSc\, BSc (Hons) \n \nAnjum is an Associate Professor at Central Queensland University with over 15 years of experience across a range of industry sectors. He has a PhD in Psychology from Sheffield University (2011). Anjum has co-edited books\, written over 100 peer-reviewed articles and secured over $3 million in research funding. He currently serves a Scientific Editor for Applied Ergonomics and has been a Scientific Convenor for the Australasian Simulation Congress on four consecutive occasions. Anjum’s research has received numerous accolades and in 2018\, he received the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Researchers. Anjum is interested in understanding the relationship between people and technologies\, tools\, environments\, and systems\, and practically translating this across safety critical domains. \n  \nClick here to register for this hybrid event (available online and in person!)
