SUMMARY:RTSA WA Event - Rail alignment re-baselining: a way to improve track maintenance effectiveness
DESCRIPTION:In the recent years\, increase in the axle load is one of the key contributors in the freight rail transport throughput. However\, accelerated deterioration in the track geometry parameters is inevitable as a result. Rail alignment on heavy haul railways has undergone long term unintended changes due to increase in axle load and throughput such that the existing alignment significantly varies from the as built alignment several years ago. \nTrack geometry elements and parameters are critical determinants of reliability and maintainability of track assets. The designated geometry and geometry parameters are used as the target during track maintenance. Quality and effectiveness of track maintenance is compromised\, and the risk of incidents is enhanced if the track geometry and parameters continue in degraded condition for prolonged periods. A fresh ‘as existing’ survey facilitates re-baselining the design alignment as the reference for the track maintenance in the future\, to improve effectiveness of track maintenance. \nThis presentation is based on a recent project undertaken by BHP Rail Engineering and AECOM. \nAbout the speakers: \nKsenija Stanic-Colic\, Superintendent Governance & Technical Stewardship\, Rail Engineering/WAIO\, BHP \nKsenija is a qualified Track and Civil Engineer who has over 25 years of practical experience in rail and mining industry\, regional and metro based.  She started her professional career with Croatian Railways where she was working in track maintenance area and managing smaller size upgrade projects.  During her professional career in Australia for the last 20 years she was working in capacity of Senior and Lead Railway/Track and Civil Engineer and Technical Lead on the major mining and metro railway projects in Western Australia. \nShe is currently working in BHP Western Australia Iron Ore Rail engineering department in Superintendent Governance and Technical Stewardship role where she leads\, coaches and mentors team members to ensure technical support\, compliance to the standards and statutory legislation. She embraces and leads introduction of new technologies for the further improvements and betterment of the network assets.  Ksenija is passionate about sharing her experiences and learnings with the broader rail industry through Engineers Australia and globally. She proud herself in providing support and leadership to graduate engineers across Engineering team in BHP. \nManeesh Gupta\, Technical Director – Rail\, AECOM \nManeesh a Technical Director at AECOM in Perth. SUMMARY:RTSA - Vic/Tas Chapter Event - Multi Body Dynamic Simulation of Post Derailment Behaviour
DESCRIPTION:Often\, multi-body dynamic simulation (MBDS) is used as a tool to examine the potential causes or likelihood of a derailment under known or expected operating conditions. From these investigations the risk of derailment (or safety factor) associated with the simulated conditions can be estimated.  However\, most MBDS studies focus only on the occurrence of a derailment event and simulation stops once the vehicle has derailed. This presentation will show how MBDS has been used to estimate vehicle trajectory and interactions with adjacent trackwork and structures following a derailment event. \nThis technique was used on the Melbourne Metro Rail Project (MMRP) to examine possible train behaviour with a series of hypothetical derailment scenarios at a new turnout to be installed on the approach to an existing road overbridge. Utilising the Universal Mechanism MBDS package\, a general model that incorporated an X’Trapolis 6 car trainset and the proposed MMRP track layout\, including associated structures and retaining walls\, was developed. \nThe track model also included a breakable rail feature which facilitates structural interaction with both fastener and rail elements during the derailment. The effects of sleepers\, ballast and adjacent tracks were also modelled. This work was utilised to assist with defining the design basis for structures in the vicinity of the turnout. \nSpeaker\nDarrien Welsby\nTeam Leader – Wheel-Rail Interface & Track\nDepartment of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering \nDarrien is a Civil Engineer and Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Railway Technology\, Monash University\, with over 15 years’ experience in the rail industry. His primary role at the Institute revolves around examination of the wheel-rail interface\, which includes wheel and rail profile development\, contact analysis\, wheel-rail interface management and maintenance techniques. \nDarrien’s other expertise includes track structure design and analysis for heavy haul and general mixed traffic applications. While most of his work is associated with the heavy haul railways in the Pilbara\, Darrien has also helped provide comprehensive wheel-rail interface solutions for general passenger\, mixed freight\, high speed and mass transit railway systems around the world. \nClick here for more details and registration

SUMMARY:SA Event - Structures on the Oaklands Rail Crossing Project
DESCRIPTION:Oaklands Rail Crossing was designed and constructed by the Public Transport Projects Alliance which consists of McConnell Dowell\, Arup\, Mott MacDonald and the Department of Planning\, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI). The project involved the grade separation of the Seaford rail line from the Morphett Road/ Diagonal Road intersection located in the South West of Adelaide. \nThe design solution was to lower the Seaford rail line underneath Morphett Road with a top down construction approach. To minimise disruption to the community\, the new section of railway and the new Oaklands station were largely constructed offline. Through close collaboration between the design and construction teams\, the rail closure was limited to 24 days\, during which time the new rail was tied into the existing and the station commissioned\, prior to being re-opened for public use. \nThis presentation will provide an overview of the structures on the project\, including discussion of the key design and construction challenges that were faced by the PTP Alliance. \nNote: This is not a RTSA Event but an EA event hosted by Engineers Australia Structural Branch (SA Chapter).

SUMMARY:RTSA - Qld Chapter Seminar: Multiple Unit Traction Motor Bearing Failure Analysis
DESCRIPTION:Queensland Rail aims to be Australia’s best performing railway\, delivering safe\, on time\, customer-focused and efficient rail services.  To achieve this\, traction motor bearing failure is being investigated to determine how and when rolling element bearings are likely to fail.  Traction motor bearing failure has previously been unpredictable on Queensland Rail rolling stock and can contribute to service delays or cancellations.  Therefore\, engineers at Queensland Rail are developing techniques to diagnose and predict rolling element bearing failure through vibration condition monitoring. \nOur keynote speakers will be Voon Wong\, Andrew Roche and Rachel Quarman from Queensland Rail Operating Assets Engineering who were all directly involved with the project. They will provide you with an insight into the project\, the processes they used\, and the progress of the analysis on traction motor bearings. \nClick on link below to register.

SUMMARY:RTSA WA Event - Artificial Intelligence for Digital Train Control
DESCRIPTION:Most train control systems require a human driver to interpret real time information and respond to this information. The human driver controls the vehicle following the defined rules. Adherence to the rules is often supervised with automated interventions to mitigate the risk of human error\, for example\, if the driver exceeds their authority (distance/speed). The driver/attendant can also react to unexpected events (degraded\, abnormal and emergency situations). \nThe notable exceptions are the increasing number of automated metros (GoA4) that successfully provide high performance services within segregated environments with minimal variance (pre-programmed). The next evolution is to provide similar levels of automation and performance on open networks (mainline and light rail) where the environment cannot be easily controlled. Ultimately\, as we move away from human driven vehicles and network management\, outside the relative simplicity of the metro environment\, autonomous systems will be required to handle all the unexpected events on the rail network\, similarly to autonomous cars\, necessitating the introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Autonomous rail has less variables\, but potentially more catastrophic consequences. The train control systems that are developed will need to consider the sensors available on-board and the information available from the connected network and how this information is processed and acted upon. \nWhen managed correctly AI has the potential to significantly improve safety. However\, to achieve societal acceptance research from the autonomous car industry suggest that this may need to be about two orders of magnitude better that the average driver. A suitable approach is required with society with respect to the use of AI. A period of increasing AI support for drivers (semi-autonomous)\, with a transition over to AI driving (autonomous)\, will be required. The expected approach is longitudinal testing\, required for developing an inductive long-term dynamic safety case (‘proven in use’). Through aggressive training environments that use training sets and test conditions that place the system in ‘extreme’ operating environments and in-service experience with a driver present to ensure AI algorithms are able to operate safety with the eventual operational demands. \nAbout the speakers: \nDavid Milburn\, Senior Technical Director\, Global Leader – Digital Train Control\, GHD\, Australia \nDavid Milburn is a Chartered Engineer with over twenty-years international railway experience.  David started his railway career when he joined the British Rail S&T graduate scheme. He quickly developed a keen interest in innovation and new technologies and in 1998 he was seconded to the ERTMS Users Group in Brussels\, and has been involved in digital train control ever since.  David has held a number of senior roles\, including leading the Signalling discipline for Network Rail’s flagship Crossrail Programme\, and as the Technical Head\, Signalling & Control Systems for Network Rail Consulting. Since moving to Australia\, David has had the privilege of being involved in some fantastic projects\, including: Sydney Metro Northwest\, and a ground breaking ETCS Level 2 mine railway in WA. David is currently leading and developing the digital train control services for GHD. \nMike Erskine\, Executive Advisor\, GHD Advisory\, Australia \nMichael Erskine has over 34 years’ experience in Process\, Mining\, Transport\, Water\, Food\, Oil & Gas\, Infrastructure and Chemical industries. His consulting experience includes risk management\, project management\, process design and troubleshooting\, accident investigation and feasibility study leader. Michael has significant experience in developing safety case and risk management documentation for government regulatory evaluation and organisational needs. \nRegistration Closes: Oct 17 2019 – 11:00 am

SUMMARY:RTSA NSW Event - Technical Presentation - Alstom's ETCS Solution for Low Density Networks
DESCRIPTION:Increasing population leading to road congestion is a driver for rail transportation investment in Australia.  Regional passenger rail is one area that requires improvement in all states across Australia to better connect regional centres Alstom\, as a global signalling provider offers a portfolio of scalable ETCS solutions\, to suit specific network and business requirements.  Alstom’s ETCS (ATLAS) solution provides a safe\, reliable and interoperable signalling solution for both low and high-density networks while optimizing the total cost of ownership whether on passenger\, freight or mixed traffic lines. \nOn regional rail networks\, ATLAS 400 solution provides in-cab signalling\, positive train localization and train protection through radio communication with centralised equipment. ATLAS 400 solution design minimises wayside equipment along the track as it does not require colour light signals and train detection devices. ATLAS 400 is specifically designed for low density lines and was built on the proven ATLAS 200 (ETCS Level2) solution supported by a strong in-service experience. The solution is fully interoperable\, future-proof and can easily be upgraded to meet new business requirements such as additional traffic capacity. \nThis presentation will outline ATLAS solution portfolio and will detail the ATLAS 400 solution from a technical and operational perspective. Solution benefits will be discussed and Alstom’s return of experience from actual applications highlighting the need for a regional ETCS solution and the benefits it will have on rail transportation. \nSpeaker Background: \nDr. Olivier Leveque holds a PhD in Control of Autonomous Vehicles from the French National Institute of Scientific Research (CNRS). He has over 20 years of experience in rail signalling systems engineering.  Olivier previously managed the Alstom ANZ Signalling Engineering \nRegistration Closes: Fri 30 Aug 2019 – 6:00 pm

SUMMARY:RTSA - Queensland Chapter Annual Meeting (AGM) and Trivia Extravaganza
DESCRIPTION:Following the success of previous year’s Railway Technical Society of Australasia (RTSA)\, Queensland Chapter AGM Dinner and Trivia Extravaganza\, we anticipate we will once again fill our venue\, the Brisbane Novotel\, with rail industry personalities for another exciting event this year. \nAveraging around 120 attendees each year\, the RTSA (QLD) AGM is one of the prominent events in the QLD Rail Industry’s calendar providing a wonderful opportunity for networking across all sectors and disciplines. The success of the evening would not be possible without the support that we receive from our sponsorship each year.

It is a joint venture between MTR Corporation (60%)\, John Holland (20%) and UGL Rail (20%) formed in September 2014.   It operates the network with a fleet of 22 Alstom Metropolis trains under a 15-year contract. \nRegistration Closes: Mon 19 Aug 2019 – 6:00 pm
