SUMMARY:Rail Systems and Safety Assurance
DESCRIPTION:Gary Bundell will be presenting on Rail Systems and Safety Assurance as Principal Rail Systems & Safety Assurance Engineer at AECOM Australia. \nAbout the speaker: \nGary is a Chartered Professional Engineer with 17 years of engineering practice experience most recently in a system and safety assurance role for the rapid transit rail transportation sector but before that in the heavy-haul rail automation sector (with system assurance roles and before that in engineering/technology development roles). He also has 18 years of academic experience in engineering education and leadership. His early engineering experience has included software development for embedded computer systems\, specification of novel control and signal processing algorithms\, and managing/mentoring other engineers engaged in these activities. \nHe has had various roles from R&D manager\, through to consulting engineer and recently in lead roles in system\, safety assurance and project review roles. He has a demonstrated capacity to work across a wide range of advanced technology projects\, and his main technical interest is in rail technology systems from a safety\, reliability\, availability\, and performance perspective. \nHe is currently on secondment to the Perth METRONET project as an engineering assurance manager\, but most recently he has worked for AECOM on various phases of the Sydney Metro project\, from technical advisor safety assurance lead on Sydney Metro West Scoping/Definition Design to technical advisor safety assurance on the Sydney Metro City & South West Reference Design and also on portions of the Sydney Metro Northern Corridor Works detailed design and construction phase as a safety assurance manager. \n  \nTo register for this event\, please use the website link below. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Joint RTSA and IRSE Presentations “Virtual Rail Infrastructure Inspection using Unmanned Automated Vehicle (UAV)” and “How Innovation is Improving Level Crossing Safety at Lower Cost”
DESCRIPTION:Our September function is a joint meeting between RTSA and IRSE \nRTSA Presentation: Virtual Rail Infrastructure Inspection using Unmanned Automated Vehicle (UAV) \nDr Paul Reichl is the team leader for Imaging\, Visualisation & Passenger Systems at the Institute of Railway Technology\, a world-renowned railway applied research centre. He has a PhD in Fluid Mechanics (Mechanical Engineering) and a first class honours degree in Applied Mathematics both from Monash University. He is a coinventor on 26 issued patents and his research interests include data analysis\, visualization\, machine learning\, imaging\, the Internet of Things (IoT)\, UAS and emerging technologies. \nCalvin Vong is a PhD student at Monash University and a researcher with the Institute of Railway Technology. He has a Bachelor of Mechatronics Engineering degree from Monash and his current research focuses on the control and aerodynamic analysis of quadcopter flying in confined spaces\, specifically tunnel-like environment. He is a robotics enthusiast with research interests in localisation\, control algorithms and UAV. \nMonash University and its Institute of Railway Technology (IRT) has been developing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to assist with the railway infrastructure inspection in remote areas and in confined areas such as tunnels and culverts. \nWith the assistance of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS)\, the UAV can remotely fly to a specific location\, follow the rail and inspect the target area. The UAV is also capable of landing on the rail and capturing images while travelling on the track. The acquired images can be used for reconstruction of the three-dimensional view of the infrastructure using the Multi-View Stereo (MVS) algorithm. \nThe UAV can also traverse through confined spaces such as tunnels and culverts in a semi-autonomous nature. Using on-board Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) scanner\, the UAV is able to measure the cross-sectional shape of the tunnel or culvert in real time. \nThese systems are expected to reduce the heavy reliance on manual inspection and facilitate the transition to a safer\, more economical and flexible inspection regime. \nIRSE Presentation: How Innovation is Improving Level Crossing Safety at Lower Cost \nGary Foster is an Electronics/Electrical Engineer with an extensive background in Research\, Development and Product commercialisation. He has over 30 years’ experience in delivering innovative high-tech solutions\, with an emphasis on advanced communications\, software\, systems engineering and mechatronics. \nAs Chief Technology Officer of Rail Safety Systems\, Gary is leading the development and commercialisation of an innovative new approach to the active protection of level crossings\, particularly in rural and remote areas. By combining existing and new technologies\, Gary is responsible for and delivering flexible\, low cost\, intelligent solutions that don’t compromise safety\, reliability\, availability or maintainability. \n\nDate\n19 / 09 / 2018 – 04:30pm for 05:00pm start \nVenue\nLevel 5\, 121 Exhibition Street\, Melbourne Vic 3000 \nNote: Public access is via sign in from the foyer. Please allow sufficient time so as not to be late. \nHost(s)\nRailway Technical Society of Australasia and Institute of Railway Signal Engineers Australasia \nRTSA members and non-members welcome \nSPONSORS \nVenue: RPV \nBusiness Card Draw: WSP \nRefreshments: RTSA \nMaximum CPD Hours\n2.0

SUMMARY:RTSA VIC/TAS PRESENTATION - RAILWAY ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM
DESCRIPTION:Our June Presentation is on Railway Energy Storage System by Ian Cook Power Modelling Specialist from MTM \nAustralia’s first 1500 Volt DC Railway Energy Storage System is being installed in Melbourne. It is being installed by the North East Project Alliance for the Hurstbridge Line Upgrade Project at Diamond Creek. \nIt has been chosen as an opportunity to meet the Project Requirements\, but at a reduced cost to the State. \nEnergy Storage Systems can be used in many ways to improve deficiencies in the Traction Power System and to reduce the energy consumption. On the Project\, it has an element of both. It is to store the excessive regenerative braking energy that has been modelled to be available when the train braking\, and release it back to the train when it departs from the station\, in order to boost the traction acceleration voltage. \nIt is an innovative and sustainable solution for the Melbourne railway network\nIan Cook is a Traction Power Modelling Specialist of Metro Trains Melbourne. Ian has many years of experience working on the Melbourne Traction Power System. He is one of the most senior traction power engineers in Victoria. Ian has been participated in most major projects planning & strategy for Victoria traction power system.\nThis presentation will cover the fundamental and needs of an Energy Storage System for the railway network\, also discussion on the future opportunities and strategies to implementation the Energy Storage System for Melbourne railway network \n  \nRegistration Closes\n07 / 06 / 2018 – 5:30 pm\n\nCost\nRegistration\nEA and RTSA Member Rate: $0.00 ($0.00 excl.
