SUMMARY:How can virtual coupling change the future of railways
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n  \nRecent developments in rail signalling technology have led to the advanced concept of Virtual Coupling. \nTrains are envisaged to exchange real-time information with each other via a Vehicle-to-Vehicle radio communication layer to allow a much shorter separation and the formation of radio-linked train platoons. \nSuch a concept would unleash the full capacity potential of existing rail networks and meet the ever-growing need of a customer-oriented rail service potentially leading the railways to a tremendous boost in both service efficiency and market competitiveness. \nMany are however the safety\, technical and technological challenges which need to be addressed before Virtual Coupling could actually come to life. \nHow can those challenges be tackled? And how could Virtual Coupling change the future of railways in terms of market potentials and service performances? \nLooking forward to meeting you at the seminar so that you can know more about the current progress in Europe of this cutting-edge and yet challenging innovation in the railway field. \nLearning outcomes\n  \n\nOperational principles defined to enable Virtual Coupling train operations.\nA simulation-based evaluation of capacity benefits that Virtual Coupling could lead to versus conventional and moving block signalling systems.\nA detailed market analysis and multi-criteria impact assessment carried out in the frame of the European Shift2Rail project MOVINGRAIL.\n\nAbout the speaker\n\nEgidio Quaglietta\n\nEgidio Quaglietta is a tenured assistant professor in Railway Traffic Management at TU Delft and co-director of the Digital Rail Traffic Lab. He has been leading research on digital rail innovations including Moving Block\, Virtual Coupling signaling and self-organsing rail traffic for several European projects such as MOVINGRAIL\, PERFORMINGRAIL and SORTEDMOBILITY. His experience in the field of railway signaling started in 2008\, obtaining a PhD degree on simulation-based signaling optimization. Later on Egidio worked as R&D engineer for several prominent railway companies such as the Italian railway system supplier Ansaldo STS (now Hitachi STS) and the British railway infrastructure manager “Network Rail”. Among his industrial experiences\, he has led a workstream of the R&I program “Digital Railway” as well as the sub-project on “Operations for Enhanced Capacity” for the EC FP7 project Capacity for Rail (C4R). He has developed the simulation tool EGTRAIN and his main interests are in the areas of railway traffic and infrastructure optimization\, innovative signaling technology and automated railway operations. He is a member of the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE).

SUMMARY:RTAA & RTSA Combined Technical Event - Quality vs Quantity by Steven Johnson – General Manager\, Operations East\, Brimble
DESCRIPTION:Come along to the RTAA & RTSA Combined Technical Event on Thursday\, 18 July where we will be joined by Steven Johnson from Brimble for an insightful discussion\, along with some networking while enjoying some drinks and canapes. \nThe topic of his presentation will be “Quality vs Quantity”. \nOverview\nWe all face a common problem in our daily lives. There is a natural conflict between quality and quantity. \nWe all hope and want to believe that it is possible to have both\, and I agree that in specific circumstances where an entire system is optimised towards this goal\, it is possible to achieve high quantity while maintaining high quality. \nHowever\, in any highly variable\, non-closed system\, achieving both quality and quantity is challenging. We seem to face a choice rather than striving to achieve both. \nFurther\, we have all heard the mantra\, ‘What gets measured\, gets done!’ \nAs with all such statements there is truth in this phrase. The implication is that measures drive behaviour. It is also true that we often default to simple measures\, even if they are not necessarily the right measures for achieving the desired outcome. In our game of mechanisation\, we see simple measures\, m/hr for tamping\, and m/hr for ballast cleaning. \nI argue that these measures oversimplify how we determine the success of a system or\, in contrast\, a service. \nDo we want lots of track tamped\, or do we want tamped track that ‘holds-up’ for a long time? When we ballast clean\, a m/hr measure misses the point\, ballast cleaning is a volume game\, not a distance game. The ballast cleaning system needs to be designed to achieve a specified through-put\, this is a function of distance\, but distance is not the output. \nI aim to explore how we measure performance and understand if there are opportunities to ensure alignment between the objectives of our work and the way our performance is assessed \n\nAttendance is free for RTSA\, TAs\, PWI and EA members (Please remember to use the discount code provided in your email) – Register Here!\nAttendance is AUD$30 for non-members (you can join find out more about joining the RTSA here.\n\nEvent Program\n\n5.30 pm: Pre-drinks\, canapes and networking\n6.00 pm: Presentation commences with Q&A\n7.00 pm: Drinks and networking\n8.30 pm: Event concludes\n\nAbout the Presenter\nSteven Johnson’s love for railways has been a lifelong affair. With a Master’s in Railway Systems Engineering from England\, he has dedicated over twenty years to working in railroads across the United Kingdom\, Europe\, and Australia. \nSteven’s career has had a particular focus on turnout renewal projects\, and he has been responsible for leading large interdisciplinary teams for multinational railway companies. In his new role as General Manager for Brimble’s east coast operations\, Steven will primarily be focused on future planning\, resource allocation\, and business optimisation for the eastern states. \nSpeakers\n \nSteve Johnson\n(General Manager\, Operations East\, Brimble)

SUMMARY:RTSA SA Chapter Event: Preparing for the Floods: An ARTC Experience
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThe Trans-Australian railway line was built over 100 years ago and while it has been upgraded in part it was not built to modern design\, which is now being felt on a number of fronts. \nThe increasing frequency of extreme weather events disrupting rail services\, as experienced across our network over the last 4 years\, demonstrates the threat that extreme weather events pose to ARTC’s assets as well as the potential economic and social consequences of outages in the supply chain. \nExtreme weather events have and will increasingly cause track closures as the resistance\, reliability and speed of recovery are tested. SUMMARY:Digital automation - signal sighting
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n  \nThis presentation examines the evolution of rail signal sighting\, a process that has traditionally been fraught with challenges\, through the lens of digital technology. We explore how digital tools have not only improved the accuracy of signal sighting but also made the process more accessible to a wider range of stakeholders. Rail signal sighting was once limited to 2D schematic drawings and physical site-based activities\, which presented a number of constraints. These constraints\, often caused by trackside equipment and underground services\, were not apparent in 2D documentation\, resulting in a delay in feedback between design and rail signal sighting committees. This disconnect often led to human error\, causing construction delays and requiring site rectification works. However\, UNITY Alliance has harnessed the power of structured data and automation to revolutionize this process. By deriving 3D model elements from 2D schematic drawings\, UNITY Alliance has enabled virtual signal sighting and clash detection with in-ground services and rolling stock dynamic kinematic envelopes in the project’s cloud-based coordination platform. \nLearning outcomes\n  \nPositive outcomes of implementing this new workflow process include: \nReal-time engineering coordination prior to construction with all stakeholders.\nClash analysis of physical assets and rollingstock envelopes during design and before construction – refer attached presentation for example.\nImprovement of accuracy and reliability of spatial 2D and 3D signalling information\, informed from a controlled data (using a master signalling equipment register spreadsheet).\nSafer approach for assessing signal sighting earlier by minimising the need of on track sighting inspections during design and construction. \n  \nEvent program\n  \n5:30 pm AEST: Welcome and Networking\n6:00 pm AEST: Presentation starts\n6:45 pm AEST: Q&A\n7:15 pm AEST: Close \n  \nSpeaker\n  \nMatt Quigley\, Principal Technical Officer\, AECOM \n  \nCost\n  \n$0 (members) $15 (non-members) \n  \nRegistration\n  \nFollow the link to the EA portal and click on Register >

SUMMARY:Leveraging electro-pneumatic turnouts on a brownfield rail corridor at a large scale
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n  \nIn recent years\, Queensland Rail (QR) has upgraded parts of its Inner-City network to allow for electro-pneumatic turnout operation. The largest concentration of existing electro-pneumatic operated points is located in the Roma Street area. As a variation to the Cross River Rail (CRR) UNITY Rail Infrastructure Systems (RIS) Alliance scope\, a design package was developed to implement electro-pneumatically operated turnouts from Roma Street Station through to Mayne Yard Stabling Yard via the Exhibition Station for the Northern Inner-City network. The scope of works aimed to complete the loop between the compressor houses from the Southern (Roma Street) to the Northern (Mayne Yard). As part of the CRR project\, the existing compressed air system was extended to allow for 82 new turnouts. \n  \nLearning outcomes\n  \nThe team effectively collaborated to implement the strategy\, requiring input from various disciplines to ensure full integration of the system into the operational network. This included: \nHydraulic modelling of the air pressure within the system. This required understanding several turnouts in a sequence that could be operating simultaneously.\nCivil and track layout for space-proofing the trackside equipment to ensure it was located outside the danger zone where possible and was accessible. The rail alignment was key for determining turnout positions. Please treat information as confidential\nStructural consideration for fixing pipework and anchoring the system.\nSignalling coordination to inform the hydraulic design and commission the system.\nCombined Service Route design to allow for the pneumatic pipework\, understanding the separation requirements\, and construction staged installation of CSR. \n  \nEvent program\n  \n5.30pm AEST: Arrival\n6:15pm AEST: Presentation commences\n6:45pm AEST: Q&A\n7:15pm AEST: Event concludes \n  \nSpeakers\n  \nRoberto Incampo\, Associate Mechanical Engineer\nHaider Rizvi\, Team Leader Track and Mechanical Design\, Queensland Rail\nSophie McLaughlin\, AECOM\, Senior Civil Engineer\nDavid Steffens\, AECOM\, Technical Director

Everyone will be affected by it. This presentation will be a high-level overview of how AI works and what it can and cannot do. It is well known that almost all computing\, from 3D graphics to computer tomography\, is based on linear algebra and calculus. It is not surprising that AI and other “frightening” developments have used the same concepts. I will explain\, in a way that is understandable to a numerate audience\, how AI works without getting too technical. \nThe goal is to make it less intimidating with a bit of knowledge. I will discuss why I am not worried about losing my job\, why being an early childhood educator may be the job of the future\, and why I look forward to the day my doctor uses AI to diagnose me. \nLearning outcomes\n\nThe meaning of Artificial Intelligence (AI)\nReview of learning algorithms you may have heard about\nThe future of AI\n\nAbout the presenter\n \n  \nProf Mike Meylan\nProfessor\, The University of Newcastle \n  \nClick here to register on the Engineers Australia website.
