SUMMARY:Leveraging electro-pneumatic turnouts on a brownfield rail corridor at a large scale
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n  \nIn recent years\, Queensland Rail (QR) has upgraded parts of its Inner-City network to allow for electro-pneumatic turnout operation. The largest concentration of existing electro-pneumatic operated points is located in the Roma Street area. As a variation to the Cross River Rail (CRR) UNITY Rail Infrastructure Systems (RIS) Alliance scope\, a design package was developed to implement electro-pneumatically operated turnouts from Roma Street Station through to Mayne Yard Stabling Yard via the Exhibition Station for the Northern Inner-City network. The scope of works aimed to complete the loop between the compressor houses from the Southern (Roma Street) to the Northern (Mayne Yard). As part of the CRR project\, the existing compressed air system was extended to allow for 82 new turnouts. \n  \nLearning outcomes\n  \nThe team effectively collaborated to implement the strategy\, requiring input from various disciplines to ensure full integration of the system into the operational network. This included: \nHydraulic modelling of the air pressure within the system. This required understanding several turnouts in a sequence that could be operating simultaneously.\nCivil and track layout for space-proofing the trackside equipment to ensure it was located outside the danger zone where possible and was accessible. The rail alignment was key for determining turnout positions. Please treat information as confidential\nStructural consideration for fixing pipework and anchoring the system.\nSignalling coordination to inform the hydraulic design and commission the system.\nCombined Service Route design to allow for the pneumatic pipework\, understanding the separation requirements\, and construction staged installation of CSR. \n  \nEvent program\n  \n5.30pm AEST: Arrival\n6:15pm AEST: Presentation commences\n6:45pm AEST: Q&A\n7:15pm AEST: Event concludes \n  \nSpeakers\n  \nRoberto Incampo\, Associate Mechanical Engineer\nHaider Rizvi\, Team Leader Track and Mechanical Design\, Queensland Rail\nSophie McLaughlin\, AECOM\, Senior Civil Engineer\nDavid Steffens\, AECOM\, Technical Director

SUMMARY:NSW Chapter Event: Rolling stock signalling interface\, compliance and compatibility testing
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE – NEW DATE: THURSDAY 2ND NOVEMBER \nOverview \nElectrified railways use running rails for three purposes: guiding the train\, providing a return path for traction currents\, and detecting trains. These purposes have coexisted since the early 1900s. However\, the introduction of electronic traction control in the 1970s and 3-phase inverter drives in the 1990s generated high levels of complex switching harmonics that threatened the safe operation of train detection. To address this issue\, railways developed standards to specify the limits of harmonics permissible in the traction return. Although rolling stock manufacturers have found ways to minimise the threat posed by electronic switching\, it is still necessary to test every new design of rolling stock entering the rail network to ensure that it is effectively detected by the signaling system and does not produce electrical noise that can interfere with the proper operation of the signaling system. Modern trains and rolling stock can cause electrical interference that disrupts signalling train detection systems and makes it difficult to detect short and light vehicles. This paper outlines the testing and assessment methods used by a major Australian rail organisation to ensure that all new rolling stock meets the requirements of signalling systems. \nLearning outcomes: \nIn this presentation you will learn: \n\nRolling stock signalling interfaces and how these systems are used effectively.\nReview of the standards and compliance required.\nCompatibility testing and the importance to effectively test all new designs\n\nEvent program\n5:30pm: Registrations open and networking\n6:00pm: Presentation commence with Q&A session\n7:00pm: Presentation concludes and further networking\n7:30pm: Event concludes \nAbout the speaker \nPaul Szacsvay\, Associate Principal Consultant\, SNC-Lavalin Australasia \nPaul is a signalling engineer and engineering manager with more than 50 years’ experience working with major government organisations. He is a specialist in signalling technology\, with expertise in development of national standards for signalling systems\, assessment of rolling stock signalling compatibility\, evaluation\, testing and type approval of new equipment and systems\, incident investigation and signalling competency management.

SUMMARY:NZ Chapter Event: Smart Tamp: The Future of Track Maintenance (Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:The Railway Technical Society are pleased to invite you to a webinar discussing ‘Smart Tamp: The Future of Track Maintenance’.\nDesign tamping helps reduce wear and tear on track and rolling stock\, lowers traction costs\, and reduces track maintenance costs by up to 30%. Network Rail can benefit from this in two ways: long-term cost savings and short-term “quick win” savings. \nSmart Tamp is focused on utilizing geodetical track data to maintain railway tracks through tamping. \nInnoTamp was a ground-breaking research project that developed a process that will improve the affordability of design tamping so that it can be rolled out to more of the national rail network – on regular as well as high-speed lines. What tasks were implemented to achieve the goal?: The tasks implemented to achieve the goal were computing relative track parameters from RILA data\, identifying track areas in need of tamping\, creating designs and tamping files in design software\, checking infrastructure clearances against design\, checking ballast quantities against design\, and trialling the results on a live railway. \nNetwork Rail in the United Kingdom has implemented Fugro’s RILA system\, an innovative survey system\, to generate geodetical data on some parts of the network. This data is then used for a variety of projects\, such as providing gauging information for the introduction of new rolling stock and for track renewals. So far\, the RILA system has surveyed over 250 000 km in the UK and has a coverage of over 70% of the rail network. \nWe hope to see you there! \nClick here to register for this event on the Engineering New Zealand website.
