DESCRIPTION:The New Zealand Tunnelling Society (NZTS) Invites RTSA members to the Australasian Tunnelling Conference in Auckland between 6 and 8 November 2023. \nClick here to register on the Engineering New Zealand website. \nAbout the conference\nConvenor and Chair of the ATC23 Organising Committee Bill Newns is delighted to host the conference in Auckland as a repeat of the highly successful 2011 ATC conference\, and can’t wait to welcome national and international colleagues to the event. \nThe ATC is now a biennial event and has played a significant role in the development of the tunnelling industry regionally for over 50 years. SUMMARY:NSW Chapter Event: Rolling stock signalling interface\, compliance and compatibility testing
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE – NEW DATE: THURSDAY 2ND NOVEMBER \nOverview \nElectrified railways use running rails for three purposes: guiding the train\, providing a return path for traction currents\, and detecting trains. These purposes have coexisted since the early 1900s. However\, the introduction of electronic traction control in the 1970s and 3-phase inverter drives in the 1990s generated high levels of complex switching harmonics that threatened the safe operation of train detection. To address this issue\, railways developed standards to specify the limits of harmonics permissible in the traction return. Although rolling stock manufacturers have found ways to minimise the threat posed by electronic switching\, it is still necessary to test every new design of rolling stock entering the rail network to ensure that it is effectively detected by the signaling system and does not produce electrical noise that can interfere with the proper operation of the signaling system. Modern trains and rolling stock can cause electrical interference that disrupts signalling train detection systems and makes it difficult to detect short and light vehicles. Not all rail defects may be observed by external observation. Some of the most critical rail defects can initiate and grow to a point of failure entirely within the rail. Essential tools for the detection of these internal defects include ultrasonics\, magnetic particle and dye penetrant testing. These tools are grouped together under the general title of Non-Destructive Testing. \nThe two presenters at this meeting will talk about the nondestructive testing of rails\, describing the various tools available and their latest technological developments. \nThe presentation will compose 3 sections\, approximately 15 minutes each as listed below. \n\nManufacturing Phased Array (PAUT) / Eddy Current automation:\n\nRail track inspection systems – automation\nRail Wheel inspection automation\, robotics\nRail Truck– overseas manufacturing and compliance testing requirements\n\n\nIn-Service Ultrasonic / PAUT:\n\nBogie Axle Testing PAUT\nRail Wheel – PAUT\, EC\, Residual Stress\nTrack testing Welds – UT\, PAUT\nTrack testing – Rail head failures – PAUT\n\n\nForum:\n\nNon-destructive testing challenges and technology applications industry discussion.\n\n\n\nPresenters\n \nLeonel Borges\, Quality and Completions\, John Holland \nLeo has been Inspecting Rail weld since he was 24years old mostly working in Major projects in WA such as FMG T45\, T155 and Eliwana\, BHP & RIO Tinto Major shutdowns and Roy Hill Project. Leo was part of the ARTC Adelaide to Tarcoola major project in South Australia where he was awarded the PWI Track welder Award for his commitment for Rail weld Quality and assisting as a quality site representative for john Holland. Leo currently assists reviewing Flashbutt processes and welding programing including fixed flashbutt units for John Holland. \nLeo’s qualifications comprise of ISO 9712 Level II Ultrasonics\, Magnetic Particle and Dye Penetrant certifications. Leo currently still conducts Rail weld inspection casually and Voluntary provides training for NDT technicians in rail weld inspection. \n  \n  \nNick Eleftheriou\, Product Manager – NDT\, Evident Australia \nNick’s progressive career with over twenty-five years of continuous experience in Construction and Project Management. Nick’s qualifications comprise of ISO 9712 Level III certifications\, ASME Plant inspector with further studies achieving a Dip. BM\, and a Science degree in Non-Destructive Testing. \nAn active industry volunteer and director for the Australian Institute for Non-Destructive Testing (AINDT)\, Nick’s ongoing appointment stands for over a decade with an enthusiasm for building industry technical knowledge through local and international engagement which advocates the future success of the Australian institute. \nHaving joined Olympus Scientific Solutions as a Technical Sales Specialist in 2020\, Nick combines his industry expertise and delivering technical solutions. DESCRIPTION:Join the RTSA SA/NT Chapter for this in person event in Adelaide on Thursday 28th September! \nAbout the Talk\nThe talk will centre on approximately 140 images taken by Bob Sampson around the state of South Australia\, over a period of about 40 years highlighting the missing branch lines of South Australia. The session will be an interactive session with questions during the presentation most welcome. \nRegister by the 25th September via the Engineers Australia website. \n\nAbout the Speaker\n \nBob Sampson OAM \nBob joined the SA Railways in January 1972 as a Porter and Ticket Collector on the Redhen trains. \nHe completed his Rules training and transferred to the Mile End Freight Yard in May 1973 as a pilot\, assistant shunter and yard porter. Bob also acted as the Signalman at Mile End South and at Keswick signal cabins during this time. He transferred to Adelaide superintendents office in May 1975 as the Relief Clerk in Transportation area\, including Movements\, Interchange\, Livestock and Trucks Offices. He later transferred to Australian National Railways Head Office in 1984 – relieving in Public Relations and working on theAN Newspaper where he was later appointed to ANR Corporate Affairs in 1986\, as Suggestion Plan Manager and Heritage Manager with ANR. \nHe transferred to Track Access in 1995 – and eventually appointed as Property & Asset Manager Aust Rail Track Corp in 1998. Bob was eventually appointed as Corporate Property Manager with ARTC\, which included VIC and NSW in 2004. \nAfter 41 years in rail industry Bob accepted redundancy in 2012\, and took up the role of Executive Officer at National Railway Museum\, the following week.

SUMMARY:International Workshop on Railway Brake Research (On-line)
DESCRIPTION:Brakes are indispensable and safety-critical systems for all types of railway trains including passenger (high-speed\, metro\, tram\, etc.) and freight trains (heavy-haul\, intermodal\, etc.). Safe and efficient railway operations require a good understanding of brakes from various parties including drivers\, maintenance crews\, manufacturers\, and design engineers. Brake research helps to expand and deepen the knowledge about railway train brakes. \nDriven by the rapid development of Intelligent Transport Systems and the ever-increasing demands for faster and heavier trains\, as well as energy savings and sustainability\, railway brake research has seen a new wave of interests from the industry and academia. Under these situations\, we propose an International Workshop on Railway Brake Research to boost brake research. The International Workshop on Railway Brake Research will be virtually hosted by CRE of Central Queensland University (Australia) and DIEF of University of Florence (Italy) from 19-20 September 2023. DESCRIPTION:The Railway Technical Society are pleased to invite you to a webinar discussing ‘Smart Tamp: The Future of Track Maintenance’.\nDesign tamping helps reduce wear and tear on track and rolling stock\, lowers traction costs\, and reduces track maintenance costs by up to 30%. Network Rail can benefit from this in two ways: long-term cost savings and short-term “quick win” savings. \nSmart Tamp is focused on utilizing geodetical track data to maintain railway tracks through tamping. \nInnoTamp was a ground-breaking research project that developed a process that will improve the affordability of design tamping so that it can be rolled out to more of the national rail network – on regular as well as high-speed lines. What tasks were implemented to achieve the goal?: The tasks implemented to achieve the goal were computing relative track parameters from RILA data\, identifying track areas in need of tamping\, creating designs and tamping files in design software\, checking infrastructure clearances against design\, checking ballast quantities against design\, and trialling the results on a live railway. \nNetwork Rail in the United Kingdom has implemented Fugro’s RILA system\, an innovative survey system\, to generate geodetical data on some parts of the network. This data is then used for a variety of projects\, such as providing gauging information for the introduction of new rolling stock and for track renewals. This will also focus on their views on the upcoming challenges and opportunities that the current historic level of investment in rail in New Zealand brings. \nCyclone Gabrielle Update – An additional presentation will be made by Daniel Headifen on the effect of Cyclone Gabrielle on the Hawkes Bay rail network and the recovery work that is current\nunderway on it. \nSimon Wood has worked in the rail industry since 1978 in the UK\, New Zealand and Australia. Currently self-employed (via Larswood Consulting) his numerous contributions to the\nRTSA include been a past Executive Chair of the RTSA\, being the longest serving committee member of the RTSA NZ Chapter and former Chapter Chair and being a participant of various RTSA sub committees and CORE organising groups. Alongside this Simon has made significant contributions to the New Zealand rail industry\, particularly in the upgrades of the Auckland Metro network. \nWalter Rushbrook commenced working in rail in 1997 and has held a variety of technical\, operational\, and managerial roles predominately in the rail industry. He has positively influenced some of the most significant railway works in this country over the past 25 years. These include improving the New Zealand rail’s safety leadership\, asset management\, and technical capacity. He has also assisted in successful business case preparation as well as holding significant roles in many award-winning projects. He is currently KiwiRail’s Executive GM Interislander Business Readiness. \nDaniel Headifen is leading the Hawkes Bay Cyclone Recovery for KiwiRail to reopen the Palmerston North Gisborne Line (PNGL) to Napier. SUMMARY:Qld Chapter Event: Using supercomputing to assess the influence of wheel diameter differences on rail damage
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nWheel diameter differences (WDD) on railway vehicles impact the dynamic behaviour\, the traction system performance and rail damage. It is well known that the various types of algorithms that govern locomotive adhesion control systems may compensate for the presence of WDD. However\, detailed studies on the influence of adhesion control algorithms on rail wear and rolling contact fatigue (RCF)\, under the presence of WDD\, have not been published. \nFurthermore\, several standards establish WDD limits for wheelsets\, bogies and vehicles which\, in turn\, determine the planning of wheelset maintenance activities. There is no information in the public domain on how such limits were set and their impact on the dynamic processes at the wheel-rail interface. Thus\, a numerical program comprising thousands of multibody dynamics simulations should be conducted to study the influence of WDD on vehicle performance\, considering several combinations of operational parameters\, in-train forces and the responses of a locomotive traction mechatronics system. The practical methodology including the example of results from such a numerical program and the analysis of the impact of WDD on rail damage and vehicle performance will be presented. DESCRIPTION:Overview\nRio Tinto’s autonomous train is 2.4km long\, consists of three locomotives and carries around 28\,000 tonnes of iron ore\, it travels over 280km. It’s the world’s first fully autonomous\, long distance\, heavy-haul rail network. The trains are giant autonomous robots because once they are set on their course\, they make all the decisions. \nThe AutoHaul™ team monitor the trains remotely from the Operations Centre in Perth (over 1\,500km away)\, they set the route and once the train is running the on-board computers and the computers in the Operations Centre take over and control the train. DESCRIPTION:Canberra Light Rail Site Tour \nThis tour will include a presentation by CMET and a walk around of the Operations Control Centre and maintenance facility. \nPlease note that spaces are strictly limited and exclusively offered to RTSA members\, prior to public access – click here to register today\, registrations close on Tuesday 25th April! \n  \nWhen: \nFriday 28 April 2023 12:00-15:00 \n  \nWhere: \nThe core tour will start at Alinga St stop in Civic and conclude at the CMET facility in Mitchell. \nThere are options to join RTSA representatives after the formal tour concludes\, for a trip on the rest of the light rail to Gungahlin\, before proceeding back to Civic (arriving approx. 16:15). \n  \nSchedule: \n12:00   Meet at Alinga St. terminus. \n12:15   Depart on the CMET service. \n12:30   Alight at the Sandford St. stop. \n12:45   Arrive CMET Mitchell for presentation and site tour. \n14:45   Core tour concludes at CMET Mitchell. \n  \nHealth and safety requirements: \nPlease note that CMET is a drug and alcohol-free site and that visitors may be randomly selected and breathalysed on their arrival on site. A blood-alcohol concentration of 0.00 is required to be allowed on to site. \nPlease do not attend the tour if you are feeling unwell. \n  \nAttire and PPE: \nLong sleeve shirts and pants are required\, and full PPE must be worn on site: orange hi-vis vest\, hard hat or bump hat\, capped boots\, safety glasses and gloves (carried on). \n  \nPhotography and videography: \nWe request that no photos or videos are taken during the tour.
