SUMMARY:Qld Event: Advances in Railway Traction Technology
DESCRIPTION:During this session we will provide two technical presentations on recent advances in technology in the railway traction system in Queensland’s passenger network. It’s a catered event and we’d like to encourage attendance in person to take advantage of the networking opportunity. \n \nPOWER TRANSFORMERS \nCaboolture feeder station is planned to be renewed by 2024 and QR’s HV Systems Engineering department is investigating a new supply arrangement that will utilise a special type of power transformer\, whose design is complicated by the booster and autotransformer systems both being supplied by this feeder station. This presentation covers the design\, modelling and transformer market solicitations undertaken by the team. \nCENTRAL STATION – CONVERSION OF OLE TO ROCB \nQR has recently completed the introduction of Conductor Rail technology in the heart of its sub-urban passenger network. The vision of the project was to introduce an Overhead Traction Contact System technology that not only delivers predicted improvements in performance\, resilience and the risk profile\, but also complements the architectural enhancement of the station. \nThe presentation covers the approach to introducing a new basic design\, and the challenges brought by implementing it in a busy brownfield setting. \nEvent program (In-person event) \n5:00 PM AEST — Arrival & registration\n5:30 PM AEST — Webinar commencement\n6:30 PM AEST — Networking drinks & canapes\n7:30 PM AEST — Conclusion \nWebinar \n5:30 PM AEST — Webinar commencement\n6:30 PM AEST — Webinar conclusion \nWho should attend this event\nAnyone interested in railway technologies\, power systems/HV systems engineers\, OHLE engineers\, mechanical engineers\, asset managers\, suppliers and consultants. \nSpeakers \nAlan Buttery\, Principal Engineer Power Systems\nAlan Buttery (B. Eng) (40) studied at the University of Queensland; 2004 to 2016 Electrical Engineer at Aurecon; since 2016 Principal Engineer – Power Systems Design\, Queensland Rail. \nJoe Percy\, Principal Engineer Traction Distribution\nJoe Percy BEng (Hons) is a graduate of Mechanical Engineering from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and has over 20 years of experience of leading design and development of railway infrastructure across a number of global networks. Following enjoyable appointments at Balfour Beatty and GHD\, Joe joined Queensland Rail in 2011 as the Principal Engineer – Traction Distribution.

SUMMARY:NZ Chapter Event: The future of Rail in New Zealand
DESCRIPTION:Join the RTSA NZ Chapter online for a presentation on The Future of Rail in New Zealand presented by Michael van Drogenbroek at 12:00-1:00pm NZST on Wednesday 15th June. \nClick here to register. \nPresentation\nJoin us and Michael van Drogenbroek\, to share an overview of the opportunities and challenges associated with developing and delivering inter-regional and long distance passenger rail services across a more ambitious New Zealand. \nHe will draw on his experience of strategic\, rail and public transport planning at Etihad Rail in the UAE\, the Department of Transport in Victoria\, Australia as well as over 25 years work at Kiwi Rail and its predecessors. The presentation will examine some of the history\, the current state and potential future approaches to developing these rail services including possible future networks and how they may be delivered. He will outline why it has been a struggle to maintain the services we had\, what the challenges (eg. the Key Success Factors required) are to re-establishing services and what future service developments for rail and other inter-regional public transport could look like. He will also suggest some of the technical challenges that need to be looked at by the industry as this is considered. \nPresenter\nMichael van Drogenbroek\nTransport Consultant/Advisor\, Heriot-Edievale Ltd \nMichael is a Transport Consultant / Advisor at Heriot-Edievale Ltd with 30 years plus experience. Currently he is working with clients on rail\, public transport and freight projects both in NZ and various overseas jurisdictions including the Middle East. He has held various senior executive / management roles in Public Transport\, Railway and Strategic Planning in Victoria Australia\, Etihad Rail in the UAE together with over 20 years at Kiwi Rail and its predecessor’s. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:WA Event: Glen Iris to Cockburn Blockade
DESCRIPTION:The Australian Tunnelling Society and the Institution of Civil Engineers invite you to an evening of knowledge sharing\, Q&A\, and networking.  This event is supported by the RTSA.  Please note this will be a hybrid event offered both in person and online. \nDate: Thursday\, 23 June 2022\nTime: 5:30-8:00pm AEST\nLocation: The in-person event will be at the Little Shoe\, 1st Floor\, Yagan Square\, Perth \nAbout the event \nThe successful reconstruction of 3.5km of the Mandurah rail line over Christmas and New Year 2021/22. For 20 days between 26 December 2021 and 14 January 2022 the Mandurah rail line was blockaded (closed) between Glen Iris and Cockburn to reconstruct the Mandurah line tracks on a new alignment to make space for the future construction of the new Thornlie-Cockburn Link. This was the longest ever blockade of a PTA line and affected the busiest section of the network. The works were successfully completed\, and the line was handed back to passenger service on schedule at full line speed (130 km/h) and without operational restriction\, the first time this has happened after a major blockade on the PTA network. \nEvent Timeline – Thursday\, 23 June 2022 \n\n5.30pm – 6.00pm: Networking and refreshments\n6.00pm – 7.00pm: Presentation\n7.00pm – 8.00pm Networking and refreshments\n\nSpeaker:  Mr Graham Holden BEng(Hons) MSc(Engr) FIEAust CPEng EngExec \n \nGraham is the Engineering Manager for the NEWest Alliance delivering the Thornlie-Cockburn Link and the Yanchep Rail Extension projects for PTA. Graham has more than 30 years’ experience in rail across engineering delivery\, design\, maintenance\, and operations.  Graham started his career with British Rail and moved to Australia in 2000.  His work had taken him to more than a dozen countries\, including Canada\, Indonesia\, Russia and Ukraine.  He is a Chartered Engineer and holds a Masters degree in Rail Systems Engineering. \nTo register and for further details click on the link below
