Rebuilding Rail in Post EQ Christchurch – Waltham Scenic Journeys Servicing Centre

Join the RTSA NZ Chapter and KiwiRail online to hear about the challenges of redeveloping and replacing damaged rail mechanical facilities following the devastating 2011 Christchurch earthquakes.

Learn from the project team involved in the design and construction of the Waltham Scenic Journeys Servicing Centre (SJSC) featuring a fully automated carriage wash facility for the TranzAlpine and Coastal Pacific fleets as part of the staged redevelopment of the Waltham Rail Yard in Christchurch.

KiwiRail initiated the Christchurch Mechanical Redevelopment Programme following significant damage to assets after the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes. The damage was spread across multiple rail sites along the Main South Line that provided mechanical maintenance and servicing to KiwiRail’s fleet of South Island rolling stock.

Background
With help from Fraser Robson, we will learn about the extent of damage to facilities, other key drivers for change, redevelopment priorities, and achievements to date.

Design
Glyn Moss from GHD will provide an insight into the design process and technical challenges faced by the design team of the Waltham SJSC.

Construction
Josh Gordon will take us through the construction journey for the Waltham SJSC including use of clever technology to interrogate the design model to optimise construction sequencing.

Lessons Learnt
–Michael Wright will then share a summary of key Lessons Learnt from the Waltham SJSC that KiwiRail and the project team have developed from a review of project successes and challenges so that these can be applied to future KiwiRail projects.
