Solving Real Rail Problems. Building Real Careers.

The RTSA Undergraduate Challenge is a national innovation competition that invites engineering students to tackle real-world problems facing the rail industry. Designed to inspire creative thinking, collaboration, and professional development, this Challenge offers students a unique opportunity to pitch practical, forward-thinking solutions to leading industry experts.

Each team—comprised of four undergraduate students and one graduate engineer—will participate in a three-evening State Challenge in July. The top teams from each state will advance to a Virtual National Final in September, where they’ll compete for prizes and recognition. Winning teams may even be invited to present at AusRAIL, the region’s largest rail industry conference.

Why Participate?

  • Work on real-world rail engineering challenges
  • Collaborate in a diverse, multidisciplinary team
  • Gain insights from industry mentors
  • Build networks with professionals and peers
  • Win prizes and earn potential course credit
  • Boost your resume with high-impact experience

This is more than just a competition—it’s a launchpad for your career in engineering, innovation, and infrastructure. With support from Engineers Australia and the Railway Technical Society of Australasia (RTSA), you’ll have access to mentoring, resources, and industry exposure that will prepare you for the professional world.
