2004 Mining Area C to Yandi Mine Railroad
Biennial Railway Project Award for 2004
MINING AREA C TO YANDI MINE RAILROAD IN THE PILBARA REGION OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA FOR BHP BILLITON.
In 2004, the award is made to Fluor Australia Pty. Ltd. for the design and construction of the Mining Area C to Yandi Mine Railroad for BHP Billiton. The 39.4 km. long heavy haul railroad in the Pilbara region of Western Australia confronted difficult terrain, sensitive environmental and heritage issues and extreme climatic conditions. The project requirements included nearly 3 million cubic metres of earthworks, deep cuttings up to 33 metres, embankments up to 48 metres and two major bridges. Notwithstanding these challenges, the project was delivered to the client three months ahead of schedule and within budget.
HONORABLE MENTION: NRG FLINDERS – LEIGH CREEK TO PORT AUGUSTA RAIL LINE TIE RENEWAL PROJECT
Honorable mention is made of this project, undertaken by contract awarded to John Holland Rail Division and comprising the replacement of some 38,000 timber sleepers over a route length of 250 km in a remote regional area of South Australia. Innovative engineering solutions, employment of local labour and the careful use of appropriate items of mechanical plant all contributed towards the successful completion of the project both on time and within budget.
