AI in railway safety: enhancing learning from accidents

September 30, 2025 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm AEST

Overview

Learning from railway accidents is a complex process that involves reviewing extensive documentation, sometimes across multiple languages, while addressing difficult operational issues. For early-career engineers, the challenge is compounded by the need to build foundational knowledge while working through a growing archive of incidents. This webinar, presented by Dr Wei-Ting Hong, Postdoctoral Research Associate at the John Grill Institute for Project Leadership, University of Sydney, will discuss how artificial intelligence can assist in processing accident data, support analysis, and provide insights for decision-making in railway safety. The session will also outline examples of how research approaches are being applied in practice, highlighting both opportunities and challenges in expertโ€“AI collaboration.
