Overview
Consistent with the duty to apply what we know, or ought reasonably to know, this presentation explores how this theory has evolved our approach to operating modern railways. Andrew distills this approach down to reveal the key elements we need to be good railway engineers. In doing so, he provides a perspective on where the industry and its engineers need to be in the future. Although this draws upon experiences in the UK, these lessons are directly relevant to and transferable to the Australia and New Zealand railway industry.
This technical presentation is hosted by the Railway Technical Society of Australasia (RTSA) and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Oceania Division.
Learning outcomes
- The key elements required to be a good railway engineer.
- How the approach to safety has evolved and shaped the engineering and operation of railways.
- What the future of engineering is in operating railways and the technologies that will enable this.
