SA Chapter Event: Digitalisation of Rail Asset Management

Keolis Downer is collaborating with the Department of Transport in Victoria to implement contemporary asset monitoring and analytics technologies into the Yarra Trams network to improve the performance of assets. This paper will introduce the problems faced by Yarra Trams as the manager of a complex mix of aging mobile and linear assets, the effort already made to establish an Information Technology framework for asset management and the new projects underway to extend the use of Operational Technologies into real time monitoring and predictive maintenance.

The key themes covered are:

  • Improving the way we capture data by integrating technology
  • Better utilising the data acquired to make evidence-based decisions on upgrades, replacements and maintenance, and lifecycle management
  • Technologies for light rail that should be embraced to improve the reliability and mobility outcomes of rolling stock
  • Showing how far away we have progressed the development of a system where the whole network can communicate effectively in real-time
  • Exploring the need for and use of health and usage monitoring systems
  • Exploring the digital connectivity of customer, process and product
  • How can the rail sector embrace digital transformation and learn from the advanced manufacturing sector
  • Adapting the internet of things, cloud computing and big data for the integration of rail OT systems
  • Interoperability of systems whilst also ensuing data security
This will be presented by Greg Williams, Engineering Manager, Keolis Downer Adelaide. Greg Williams is a risk and asset management professional with 35 years’ experience in the engineering and management of physical assets. He has a track record of achievement and leadership of engineering and asset management functions, having worked in a variety of senior positions across the defence, utilities, telecommunications and rail industries.

Throughout Greg’s career he has remained keenly interested in maintenance engineering, reliability and process safety practices. He has delivered workshops, university lectures, professional training courses and technical papers on a variety of maintenance and asset management related subjects. Greg often speaks about these topics at international conferences.

Greg is an aerospace engineer by qualification, a Fellow of Engineers Australia; a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) registered on the National Engineers Register; a Certified Fellow in Asset Management (CFAM); a Certified Asset Management Assessor (CAMA); Certified Reliability Leader (CRL) and a Member of the Risk Management Institute of Australia (RMIA).

Greg is currently the Director of Engineering and Asset Management at Keolis Downer Rail, where he is responsible for all systems engineering; strategic asset management; standards development; technical assurance data and analytics activities related to the Yarra Trams assets.  Greg is also the Chief Engineer at Yarra Trams and the Keolis Downer Adelaide train network, which keeps him busy overseeing engineering changes and the professional development of engineers and asset managers.
