Overview
Safety assurance plays a critical role in delivering safe and compliant rail systems, but understanding the theory is only part of the challenge. Drawing on experience from major rail projects including Parramatta Light Rail Stage 1, Regional Rail Link and Auckland’s City Rail Link, the presenter will share practical insights into how safety assurance is applied in real-world project environments. This presentation will explore the relationship between legislative requirements, safety assurance frameworks and the concept of So Far As Is Reasonably Practicable (SFAIRP). Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how safety cases, assurance arguments and governance processes contribute to safe railway operations and project delivery. Through case studies and industry examples, participants will learn practical approaches, common pitfalls to avoid and lessons that can be applied across rail and other safety-critical industries.
