Operating the World’s longest & heaviest train

In Australia’s Pilbara region trains convey processed iron ore from the mines to the ports. These trains are among some of the largest in the world. In a normal day, these trains will move between 1 and 3 million tonnes of Iron Ore over a nominal haul distance of between 300 – 400 kms. Due to the regional conditions and market variability of the commodity business, these railroads have had to constantly optimise and stretch their operating technology to maximise their return on investment.
This presentation provides an overview of the operational considerations that were assessed prior to the operation of the world-record train. This train challenged the operating paradigms at BHPIO and presented a number of unique and complex problems to solve. It also provided valuable data for the business as it endeavoured to grow its operating footprint in a low capital investment environment. This presentation will review the operation and its operating infrastructure and technology platforms whilst specifically reviewing the operation of the world-record train.
Trent Ludlow is KiwiRail’s Regional Lead – Upper South Island. Trent has held senior leadership positions at BHP (Coal and Iron Ore businesses), Rio Tinto Iron Ore, Fortescue Metals Group and at Downer Rail. These roles have been primarily operationally focused, however Trent was a key leader in the establishment of the first non-railway based above-rail operator in Queensland.
