SA/NT Event: PWI South Australia Event Non-destructive testing of rails

October 5, 2023 @ 5:45 pm - 8:00 pm ACDT

Join the PWI SA branch for their October meeting, an in-person event on the non-destructive testing of rails in Adelaide on Thursday 5th October!

If attending, please RSVP to Robert Schweiger by Tuesday 3rd October 2023 by phone on 0413 128 775 or by email at [email protected]

About the event

Rail inspection is an essential task to ensure the safety and performance of railway track. Not all rail defects may be observed by external observation. Some of the most critical rail defects can initiate and grow to a point of failure entirely within the rail. Essential tools for the detection of these internal defects include ultrasonics, magnetic particle and dye penetrant testing. These tools are grouped together under the general title of Non-Destructive Testing.

The two presenters at this meeting will talk about the nondestructive testing of rails, describing the various tools available and their latest technological developments.

The presentation will compose 3 sections, approximately 15 minutes each as listed below.

  1. Manufacturing Phased Array (PAUT) / Eddy Current automation:
    • Rail track inspection systems – automation
    • Rail Wheel inspection automation, robotics
    • Rail Truck– overseas manufacturing and compliance testing requirements
  2. In-Service Ultrasonic / PAUT:
    • Bogie Axle Testing PAUT
    • Rail Wheel – PAUT, EC, Residual Stress
    • Track testing Welds – UT, PAUT
    • Track testing – Rail head failures – PAUT
  3. Forum:
    • Non-destructive testing challenges and technology applications industry discussion.
